AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

My friend used to do this with her husband and children but she had OCD and was very open about it . Just a thought x

puppysleepdeprivation · 21/09/2026 23:14

I wouldn't do that to a sister (or any guest), but you know she's odd about money and hot water. I think you just have to accept that this is how she is and be grateful you're only staying a short time. It's still a bargain. Paying her in advance and telling her you don't want to hear an itemised list may be for the best.

DryadsRest · 21/09/2026 23:15

living alone would mean she could acquire all sorts of patterns of restrictive behaviour! There wouldn’t be anyone else to complain about it or to be impacted by her thinking until now!

Laurmolonlabe · 21/09/2026 23:23

Go and stay somewhere else, it will cost more , but honestly who wants to deal with nonsense like that?

Yetone · 21/09/2026 23:31

She does sound very stingy but to be honest, I wouldn’t like a house guest for a few weeks.
I am not tight but when I shower, I turn the shower on to get my body and hair wet then I turn the shower off while I soap/shampoo my body and hair then turn the shower on to rinse off. It is just the way I do things. Could you do this and tell your sister that while you may be in the shower for longer, you are only running the water for 5 minutes.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/09/2026 23:33

I know few people like this, my mother being one of them.

Lots of money but no love.

I hope her cash holds her hand as she dies.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/09/2026 23:35

HonorBound · 21/09/2026 23:11

This doesn’t purely have to do with money.

it’s something else at play here

tne birthday present, she wasn’t able to accept the gift and enjoy it - she worried about the return gift

it’s more about waste and not wasting things, but what the crux is?

it’s not about being stingy, it’s not about control either. It will though be misconstrued as tight and controlling

Edited

I disagree.

She got what, in her eyes, was an expensive gift so her focus was on having to spend more money than she wanted to on a reciprocal gift.

With these types, it really is about the money.

This. I'd find it unbearable and like all respect for her.

Yetone · 21/09/2026 23:38

Why is it not that simple to go and stay in an hotel?
Presumably you asked to stay with her and you knew what she was like.

Yhjan · 21/09/2026 23:40

Just pay her the amounts she wants. It’s so small anyway.

TheSmallAssassin · 21/09/2026 23:43

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:52

Yes. I told her I would be happy to buy all her food for the time I'm staying, in addition to £100 a week for the hassle. DS responded that wouldn't be necessary.

I will take the advice from PPs and leave her a crisp £100 note each Sunday evening to cover my "rent" for the week.

A £100 note?

Stick to <5 minute showers

Give her £20 for bill

Be grateful your time in her home is finite.

Be grateful she’s letting you stay as she is obviously someone who struggles with adjusting to having another stay with her.

CombatBarbie · 21/09/2026 23:45

FruAashild · 21/09/2026 22:36

I presume you're joking about crisp £100 notes as there's no such thing.

@itsalltoplayfor all the Scottish and Northern Irish banks issue £100 notes.

Yup, Uk only consists of England 😉

I miss £1 notes!!!! Felt so.rich as a.kid 🤣

Endoadnowarrior · 21/09/2026 23:49

Surely all this nonsense could be avoided if you had agreed an amount to contribute for your use of her utilities whilst you're there!

If you are staying with her for free then YABU to take the piss if your sister is sticking to a budget and she's clearly set out the boundaries (even if you disagree with that budget, or think its stingy etc - her house/bills, her prerogative).

If you ARE contributing then she's BU cause that's just weird to police another paying adult!

BillieWiper · 21/09/2026 23:50

Knowing what she's like, and knowing it's 20p per minute or whatever I'd just given her 50 quid towards the water, leccy and gas for the month if there is any. Before I even used it. Then tell her to let me know if it goes above that and I'll pay more. I'd also strongly consider not staying again!
It's all very well not wanting to be out of pocket but bickering over literal numbers of pence under 10 is a bit much.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 21/09/2026 23:52

Pay her in actual pennies

preferably at the end of your stay, with one of those huge bags from the bank

SirJe · 21/09/2026 23:53

Get a hotel spa membership for a month or 2 and have leisurely showers and use the facilities daily.

I want to be clear that I think you're being reasonable and she is not. BUT could you just give her £30 and ask her to stop with the shower monitoring. She definitely comes out ahead, and maybe she'll stop worrying about every minute in the shower.

Sxwer · Yesterday 00:09

How long will you need to stay with her?
I would want to go elsewhere.
She sounds truly awful.

A £100 note?

I dont know if you heard but there is N Ireland, Scotland and Wales as part of the UK and two of those have £100 notes. Lots of people live in those countries.....who knew?!

LadyGAgain · Yesterday 00:22

She’s utterly bat shit. However, given the small cost. Pay (I’d over pay by 5p lol) and smile. Energy costs are about to go through the roof again and perhaps she has anxiety over that.

Anyahyacinth · Yesterday 00:25

A harassment payout, that paid at that level..would have had a significant level of harm maybe that changed your sister?

The idea that your sister should feel secure in such a volatile world as a person living alone and responsible for her own financial well-being ...because her house is paid off is lacking understanding too...there are many other costs to living. Higher impact costs on one income.

The five minute showers may be about money, environment...maybe you could ask for the whys and not assume? Maybe you could repay her hospitality with curiosity and understanding?

Moveoverdarlin · Yesterday 00:38

I’d say ‘Karen, calm the fuck down about the showers. Tomorrow I’m having one and I’ll be 16 minutes. Hopefully this will cover the cost for the remainder of the time I’m staying.’ And I’d put £100 in cash in front of her. If you need more just let me know.

She’s being insane but you need to shut her up. 10p here and there? She’s bonkers. Give her some cash to really shut her down.

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 01:00

Pay in advance, give her £30 for the hot water for the month. I assume she has money worries.

plus also have a shower when she’s out.
