AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

She sounds completely unhinged. However

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat

She is doing you a favour. I'd take as long as I wanted/needed and then pay her what she wants. As I say, she's completely crazy to monitor money like that, but in the grand scheme of things, £20-30 is nothing but if it mans a lot to her, then great.

Tell her she’s a horrible host

What about all your sister's other bills, gas, Internet, council tax, tv license, phone, water, window cleaner ? I would want to pay 50% of these per month as well or pro rata if there are other adults living with her plus a contribution towards her rent or mortgage. It's ok to be frugal.

I suppose I'm grateful she isn't billing me a portion of her internet bill! However I think that sounds like a really insane way to host. I have family and friends stay with me all the time - I would rather hug an alligator than charge them council tax, TV license and Wi-Fi fees!!!

That isn't frugal to me, it's obsessive!

All I'm seeing in your posts is a lot of but, but, but. Why don't you just give her some money to cover the utilities?

But do they stay for weeks as a favour to them? Very different situation as you needed a place to stay and are saving a fortune by being there. You aren’t there as an invited guest.

She said no? Im sure she said she offered and it was refused..

Sunbringer · Today 07:51

Well it’s cheaper than a hotel. Yes it’s mental but it’s her house. I’d just never stay there again - chuck a £20 note at her and tell her to keep the change. If she said I was too sensitive ever again I’d say she was the one sensitive as a new lamb about her shower meter and smirk at her.

Sunbringer · Today 07:56

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:57

The odd thing is she's probably more well off than anyone else in the family! She got a big payout many years ago - I'm talking over £200,000 - from a harassment case at work and used that to pay off her house. She still works but if you don't have a mortgage, kids, partner, pets... what could you possibly be spending it on? She doesn't travel and her hobbies are all home based and cheap.

I don’t have a mortgage, kids or pets and my bills still come to around £1000 a month including food. Add days out and medical costs and transport and it’s closer to £2000.

People without kids and pets do still have expenses.

Idontpostmuch · Today 08:57

Are we sure this post is real? Sorry to doubt you, OP, but it's too bizarre. Easily believable that she'd ask for a general contribution to cover the extra costs of an extra person, but to ask for 7p? Instead of DSis or my sister, you've named her. Would you have done that with a real situation? Just a thought.

Most of that stuff doesn’t change because one extra person is there for a few weeks. Her tv licence and Internet don’t jump up in price! The window cleaner? ridiculous 🤣

graceinspace999 · Today 09:07

You’ve got a great deal. Leave out more money to cover costs.

It’s not your business how much savings she has or how frugal- she’s doing you the favour!

Offer or leave out the money so she doesn’t need to ask.

Look forward to going home and get her a lovely present and thank you card.

Chickadee001 · Today 09:15

OMG this is beyond dreadful for YOUR SISTER to act like this, she sounds truly vile sorry and seems to enjoy bullying and threatening you!
The sooner you can escape the better and don't look back...! I am aware of people who've been in similar situations ie bathroom refurbs who've found it easier to join a gym for a month just to use the showers!

When an OP puts a name is inverted commas she’s signalling that she’s using a made up name for anonymity.

I hope you don't have to stay there much longer. What a horrible way to be treated by your sister! Also, she shouldn't be casting aspertions on your character " too sensitive" ?! We're all different, and to be honest she sounds about as sensitive as a breeze block. My advice would be throw her £50, tell her to shut her pus ( Scottish word for face) 😜...and shower away to your hearts content. If it was me I would have as little to do with her as possible after this. She's speaking to you like a child. You deserve better, don't tolerate it just because she's family.

GasPanic · Today 10:27

I would just take as long as I wanted and breezily pay the £2.48 at the end of the week.

I'd probably also calculate the time period and add on a penny for interest to make a point of it, and maybe 2p for the extra running of the extractor fan.

Bear in mind as she gets older this sort of behaviour isn't likely to get any better.

Don't be daft. What do you want her to do, literally shove £50 into her sisters complaining mouth?

As a host, you either accept some cash to cover expenses or you don't, and if don't, you shut the fuck up about how much someone is costing you in hot water.

This has nothing to do with money. It's an older sister enjoying having some power over her little sister.

Exactly this. I don't understand why people are trying to make out that it's the OP's fault because she didn't offer in the right way.

My sister always buys me expensive stuff for Christmas I don't want, then expects me to spend the same money on her.

Maybe we can swap.

I agree with you that it seems obsessive and as I pointed out before, it doesn't seem to be about the money itself - there is probably something else going on here that makes tracking and limiting water use feel important to her.

Obsessions and fears don't necessarily seem rational or understandable to others at all. We can't armchair diagnose of course, and loads of people have some level of obsessive / compulsive or anxiety-based behaviour that wouldn't necessarily meet the threshold for a clinical diagnosis. We all have our trigger points and oddities and 'things'. Trying to control something rigidly is often about trying to cope with anxiety. You previously mentioned that your sister has always been 'up tight', which could mean any number of things but does make me curious about whether there is something longer-term here that she is facing.

The other possibility is that it is about the money after all and that her financial situation is a lot more precarious than it seems and that this is what has put her into such a fearful state. If this is the case, there is something that makes it hard for her to accept offers of money from you that would make up for what you're costing her - again, doesn't have to seem rational to anyone else. A lot of people have a deep fear or dislike of asking for or accepting money, which again can be about our personality or our values or our life experiences and not necessarily anything that would get classified as a symptom of a mental health difficulty.

I suggested that you could address it openly with her and you said you couldn't as she would get too upset / angry. Only you can decide whether it is worth triggering these feelings off in order to get to a place of more understanding. Your only other choices are to accept it and endure it for as long as you need to or to leave and make another living arrangement.

It does sound hard for you, but presumably it must feel very hard for her to have someone disrupting her habits and her coping mechanisms. Personally I wouldn't agree to host someone if I knew that my anxieties about their water use would create tension, but everyone is different. Maybe her desire to help you outweighed that for her. Maybe she doesn't see how she acts about water as obsessive and just views it as reasonable and normal (after all, I've been a guest in the homes of people who have very different beliefs to me around cleanliness and about conventions of host / guest behaviour, and I've found this stressful and difficult, but I've had to accept that this is their normal, that they aren't likely to change anytime soon, and that it is up to me to decide whether this is a price I'm willing to pay to get to spend time with them in their home).
