AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Does she sit and watch the smart meter thing?

My BIL was obsessed when they got theirs. If it ever went from the green light to amber, he would start turning things off. Red would have him in a right mood.

Luckily my sister just blatantly ignored him and pointed out that she paid half the bills and she would have as many showers as she wanted! I would go with just giving her £100 and saying that you will now have as many, and as long, showers as you want.

If she still kicks off then it isnt about the money.

Id Just slap £10 on the table in front of her and say something along the lines of ' since my water usage is so pathetically important to you, this is my shower money for the week. I've pre-calculated that this amount more than covers at least 20mins a day so I will take as long as I fucking well like!'

Is she actually called Karen or is that just some misogynistic bullshit?

This.

MaturingCheeseball · Yesterday 21:03

I agree that there is “offering” and actually laying the money down on the table. If someone offered me money if they were staying long term I’d say, “Oh no, of course not!” but then would be grinding my teeth a bit if they were having 20-minute showers or ramping up the central heating thermostat. Obviously the sister is a bit eccentric with her 8p charges etc but it does seem to be getting to her, so the OP should make a gesture of goodwill (ie £100).

Wingingit73 · Yesterday 21:03

Pay her half of what you'd pay in s hotel or stay somewhere else. Sounds awful but dont fall out over it

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:52

Yes. I told her I would be happy to buy all her food for the time I'm staying, in addition to £100 a week for the hassle. DS responded that wouldn't be necessary.

I will take the advice from PPs and leave her a crisp £100 note each Sunday evening to cover my "rent" for the week.

I’d leave a note saying “towards the water and gas bill” - then try and move out asap!

She sounds deeply unhappy or unwell, or both :(

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 21:12

I have never even seen a £100 note, crisp or otherwise. Do they still exist?

allflownthenest · Yesterday 21:16

I live on my own but have had family staying over August and September, my electricity app informed me that my consumption in August was up 70% on the previous month. I laughed with my family about it not charged them.

momtoboys · Yesterday 21:21

She sounds insufferable. Is there a fitness center you can join for a month and shower there? Can you just give her a reasonable amount of money in advance so she doesn't have reason to be such a cunt unappealing human?

ByRoseBiscuit · Yesterday 21:26

Nothing worse than a tight arse, she sounds unbearable

Booboobagins · Yesterday 21:31

I would never ask anyone for using the shower.

I honestly think she manages her costs well, but it's a bit weird she's using it to somehow bully you which is why you git upset 💕 Maybe this behaviour is how she got her payout and she may be neurodiverse...

In any case, it's good of her to let you stay, don't give her £100, she turned that down. I'd either offer her £20 a week for showers as you might go over 5 mins due to your curly hair or make a game of it - eg on hair washing days you say 'I'm going to take less than 8mins today cos Im washing my hair, tell me how well I did' , and on non hair washing days, say Ok here I go, 'I' m going to try to beat 5mins'...

In all honesty we should all only take a few mins to shower - soon water will be so scarce we will be lucky to get 2mins...

Please try not to take her behaviour personally.

JLou08 · Yesterday 21:39

You're not being sensitive. That level of control and monitoring would give anyone anxiety! She sounds absolutely bonkers. I'd just give her enough money to cover 30 minutes a day in the shower so she lays off.

MsAmerica · Yesterday 22:06

Well, it sounds crazy to me. However, you should consider taking advantage of the opportunity to try being more assertive.
Can't help wondering if your mother is alive and knows about this.

BeUmberMember · Yesterday 22:13

IHaveAFeelingWeAreNotInKansasAnymore · 21/09/2026 20:58

I would probably just give her £20 per week towards the hot water while staying there so she gets off your case.

Her house, her rules i guess.

What about all your sister's other bills, gas, Internet, council tax, tv license, phone, water, window cleaner ? I would want to pay 50% of these per month as well or pro rata if there are other adults living with her plus a contribution towards her rent or mortgage. It's ok to be frugal.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · Yesterday 22:21

Did you hog the shower as a kid?

k1233 · Yesterday 22:26

5 min showers is ample time. When we were in a particularly bad drought with capital city water supplies below minimum levels, the government sent two minute shower timers out in the post. You know she's got a thing about the shower, just get a hustle on. Wet, lather, rinse out.

Swiftie1878 · Yesterday 22:33

DuchessOf · Yesterday 16:18

Thank you.

I'm very open and explicit with DS, due to some of our miscommunication in the past. She waves these things off but then obsesses about then and becomes passive aggressive or just straight up aggressive. I am exhausted!

Sounds like she has quite serious OCD, so while my initial thought was that you should just give her a lump sum to cover off any possible costs, I don’t think that will solve the ‘atmosphere’ around your shower timings!

Are you a member of a gym? Could you go and shower there instead?
Or shower when she’s out of the house?

Foolish1984 · Yesterday 23:38

Mental health issues. Get an Airbnb as soon as you can. This will categorically NOT improve nor change in any way

Most of us shampoo our hair twice (mandatory for a decent, proper clean of both hair & scalp, even with the finest of shampoos) and then condition before we even get to body washing!

2 minutes is a prison shower. Not nearly long enough.

Mine is always on red. How do you get them to go to green? I'm ecstatic if mine goes to amber. I'd also be estactic if my shower only cost 2p a minute to run Envy

Define "us"

Because I do the bare basics of shampoo, then conditioner because too much shampooing leads to stripping the hair of natural oils which leads to it over producing.

Hence why you shouldnt wash your hair every day. You will say "Its gets greasy if I dont!". Wrong. It get's greasy because you do.

ETA.....surely you wash your body while you leave the conditioner in? Takes less than two minutes to wash the whole body in a shower!

How much would it be for a bath?

Not much if you only used the same amount of water as a 5 minute shower.

Difficult to believe this post is real.

Seajaye · Today 05:26

You sister seems to have OCD.. in the circumstances, dispite her declining your offer to pay her some ' rent' and even taking account of her not needing the money, if use her figures/ Google to calculate your expected consumption for your anticipated stay period . I think you should leave the water/energy money in an envelope on the kitchen window sill for her .

You just need to tolerate it as it is saving you money, or if you can't just move out into an Airbnb.

You'll leave her a "crisp £100 note"? Really? 🤨

She sounds hard work and you both sound petty. Go stay in a hotel or apartment.
