To be disappointed Dolly Parton supported biological men using women's toilets?

I really liked her music and she seemed like a nice person: her Imagination Library came to my borough recently. I was very sad to hear she'd died.
But was very disappointed to read this. The statements she made about trans people deserving respect, no issue with those.
But minimising the reasonable concerns women have about being forced to let men in their toilets was wrong.
I'm not saying she should have spoken out for GC issues. It might have been best just not to comment.
Parton had connections with drag queens and I wonder if that's the lens she saw transwomen through : not an excuse but might partially explain.

'mainstream'

  • I doubt that. In America, a major reason Trump won was that Harris was TWAW.

In her industry though, yes.

Which brings us back to the far right. 👍

Men can’t become women. There’s nothing notable about Trump taking that position.

The extraordinary thing is that left leaning parties are pretending they can.

Well I think a TRA is someone who can explain what rights trans people are fighting for that they do not possess but everyone else has. I mean TIM have all the same rights as a non TI male and a TIF has all the same rights as a non TI female so what exactly are they upset about. Sex and gender are different as we have been told, so they should have no problem using the mixed gender single sex facilities of their sex should they? So far I’ve not met one TRA, just a lot of misogynistic woman hating people.

What is a ‘mixed gender single sex facility’ ? Surely it can’t be both.

Well yes it can. Gender and sex are different as we are often told. Therefore anyone of any gender can use the facilities relevant for their sex. So a male claiming to be a woman can use the male facilities as his gender may be “feminine” but his sex is male.

One would be the women’s ’mixed gender’, single sex facility.

All for use by those of the female sex, irrespective and inclusive of however any female user ‘identifies’. That is the made up ‘gender’ bit. Even if some woman claimed she was a cat, never mind claiming to be a man. What would all these women have in common? All belonging to the biological, and immutable female sex.

Then you’d have the men’s ‘mixed’ gender’, single sex facility.
All for use by those of the male sex. Irrespective, and inclusive of however any male user ‘identifies’. Even if some of the dudes claimed to be a wolf, or a woman. Again, that is the made up ‘gender’ bit. What would they all have in common? All of the users would be of the biological, and immutable male sex.

What about a man claiming to be a transman to access female facilities - as I understand it transmen are welcome there?

No. As he is a man.

It doesn’t really matter what anyone is claiming to be. It matters what they actually are. Men shouldn’t be in women’s spaces.

Where has she mentioned men or trans women in women’s toilets? Dolly kept out of politics as much as she could, throughout her life. This was Dolly saying she’s not getting into it. She said “if I have to pee, I’ll pee” etc but this was Dolly’s usual style of moving the conversation away because she was constantly being asked for political opinions and she avoided giving any. You’ve made a leap here OP, if you are basing your “disappointment “ on these articles.

But we are told no one would ever pretend to be trans for nefarious reasons, which is why we must believe snd man claiming a trans identity that he is a woman do should let trans identifying men into female spaces. If men don’t pass as women when they’re wearing female coded clothes , they’re not going to pass as women wearing male coded clothes are they.

you seem to be suggesting that we either let men pretending to be women into female spaces or we let men pretending to be women who are pretending to be men. So the problem is men then? Instead of trying to scaremonger when into giving up female spaces, go and work on the men you know who would pretend to be trans to access female spaces. I don’t know any, but you seem to believe some men you know would try that. Go and work on them.

A so called ‘transman’ is a biological female claiming to be a man. Because she is a biological female, she is not a male. A man, on the other hand, is a biological male, so not a ‘transman’. He would, in reality, be a man. The ‘transman’s’ claim is merely that. A claim, not reality.

There is no regulated design called ‘gender neutral’.
The correct term is universal or unisex. This is an enclosed room that has the washbasin and hand drying facilities within it as well as the toilet.

The correct term for a standard disabled toilet is Accessible. It is usually for both sexes.

There is also an Ambulant design which can be either universal or within single sex accommodation. The ambulant design has rails to hold onto and an outwards facing door. It is a useful addition for frailer people.

You know exactly what we are talking about here. Women’s public, single sex spaces. Why are you being deliberately obtuse?

Most female abuse is in the home.

So your solution is to take away female’s single sex spaces outside the home?

🤦‍♀️

I get that a lot people loved her music, her charity work: I still do. But does that mean nothing she did can be criticised even mildly?
I'm not saying this negates her music or her philanthropy.

She had an opinion.

It's different to your opinion.

That's life - and it doesn't make her less of a person because she views things differently. It's a complicated topic and I get furious that people like you insist on others sharing their opinion, and then getting annoyed that it's not the same as your own.

We need to learn to disagree without rancour else we can only ever find friendship in someone who is a clone of ourself.

Personally I look for just one good thing I like in a person, and just one thing we're in alignment over, and just one thing we share.

That's good enough for the start of a friendship.

It's not bigotry to say that biological men should not be in female toilets, changing rooms, etc.

bigotry
/ˈbɪɡətri/

Bigotry is stubborn, unreasonable intolerance of any person, group, or belief that differs from one's own.

It absolutely is bigotry. "my opinion is the only valid opinion"

Look - the whole trans thing is a minefield these days. It's not helped by the radical trans-women who seem to feel that they should be treated exactly like a woman and in doing so have ruined life for a lot of long-transitioned trans people who were quietly getting on with their life, disturbing no-one, and who were accepted by men and women.
It's not helped by some of the more radical "terfs" who in pushing back against the radical trans activists have created hard lines; not surprisingly since the previous soft live-and-let-live approach was abused, but in doing so are effectively outing people who transitioned and have been "passing" perfectly well and behaving perfectly well.
And lastly, it's not helped by politicians jumping on the bandwagon for votes, nor by men abusing the legislation so they don't get banged up in the male wing,

But Dolly was a consumate politician. She ducked almost every question with a joke and I think she did the same here with her "when I need to pee" statement. I can't and won't fault her on it.

So maybe go have a look in the mirror and have a think about whether you can accept that some things are nuanced, complex, and difficult.

After the Ed Sheeran debacle I think public figures should stay as neutral as possible. The world will become a little more beige and lacking in context but that’s the way it has to be in a binary social media world that does not allow for any nuance

I think on this particular subject women should absolutely not stay quiet. We need to move the needle (further). It is not ok for trans identifying men to have access to women's spaces and take our places. This is an emergency. Courage is called for.

because we can’t just ignore the law if it offends our belief system or religion. Female means biological female in law, therefore males should not enter sex segregated spaces like toilets. Many transwomen are respectful of the dignity of our spaces and wouldn’t enter a female toilet or a rape survivor group for women. But some trans women insist on still using these spaces and some seem to enjoy taking a photo in said space and sharing it on social media.
I wonder why that is. Do you?

Pretty sure people who live in America can ignore any British law they like and added to that even for British Citizens the law doesn't impose what people think and believe.

I always think that the men who are GCs are as dodgy as fook. Convenient scapegoats in trans women. What I don't get is that the GCs fall for it and embrace them!

Worse they fawn over these GC men while they call women who disagree with them all kind of misogynistic terms, silly women, handmaidens and get pretty nasty at a woman disagreeing with them. But they're the side that ain't male centred at all and toooootally cares about women's rights.
