To be disappointed Dolly Parton supported biological men using women's toilets?

I really liked her music and she seemed like a nice person: her Imagination Library came to my borough recently. I was very sad to hear she'd died.
But was very disappointed to read this. The statements she made about trans people deserving respect, no issue with those.
But minimising the reasonable concerns women have about being forced to let men in their toilets was wrong.
I'm not saying she should have spoken out for GC issues. It might have been best just not to comment.
Parton had connections with drag queens and I wonder if that's the lens she saw transwomen through : not an excuse but might partially explain.

This is why I am asking.

You have labelled me as aggressive i.e. a puncher

I am asking why?

Perhaps because you can't seem to read the words that someone has said they'd rather not engage with you. For all of the worrying about toilets, a remarkable number of GC posters show online they don't actually process or understand NO or boundaries much and I wonder how much of their paranoia is projection of their own behaviour.
You're not entitled to debate with anyone just because they disagree with you, perhaps you're viewed as aggressive because you can't read the room and that you're comments are actually in good faith for discussion.

please provide specific details of the bigotry and transphobia of which you speak, otherwise we’ll assume you’re chatting hyperbole again.
I’ll wait patiently…..

Oh, the name-calling again.

It's not lazy or ignorant; it's simply factual. Who are the loudest voices against trans rights? The far right. It is a right wing cause. You may hold less conservative views on other topics, but that simply indicates that you are inconsistent, which you are of course allowed to be.

Being a "lifelong labour supporter" until recently doesn't cancel out the fact that your new pet cause is solidly right wing. I can see how it might be frightening to realise that you have fallen into the stereotype of becoming more conservative as you've aged. It happens.

The fact that right wing people are almost always sex realist doesn't mean that all sex realist/GC people are right wing. The fact that support for GI is more prevalent amongst younger people, doesn't mean that people who don't buy in are all old and stuck in their ways.
I'm a left wing feminist who believes there are very important reasons why women need some spaces away from people of the male sex. I don't believe it's possible for people to change sex or that some male sexed people should be exempt from this. I don't think that means I've fallen into any stereotype.

I don’t want biological men in the ladies bathroom. At the same time I wouldn’t deny a trans woman the opportunity to have a pee.
You will always find perverse men trying to access vulnerable spaces for women.
I find it risky and uncomfortable allowing DS use the men’s bathroom, more than I fear a trans women using the ladies.

Well, the thing is, trans women don't want to pee in a gender neutral toilet. They want to pee in a WOMEN's toilet. that says it all really...

Good grief, reading comprehension isn't your strong suit.
And ew, no, we're not proud of being called "terf island". Speak for yourself.

I didn't even know anyone called us "Terf Island"

Making demands for ‘specific details’ and saying ‘I’ll wait patiently’ passive aggressively is the absolute classic tone of all the transphobic threads in that section of the site, where this discussion belongs.

thought so.
Jeez, so predictable.

Trans men exist too.

I know, I can’t see how this affects what I’ve said!

biological men won’t be worried about their safety if a trans identified female, aka a trans man,
enters their private spaces. I mean he might not like it and would prefer it to remain men only, but he wouldn’t be worried for his safety, generally speaking.

It was a blind spot I'd say. Not a terribly surprising one as I think she, like a lot of women in her position, was thinking in terms of what she say as harmless gay men.

Not so much the underlying exploitive and medically abusive interventions, or a man in a women's psychiatric ward, or even men in women's sports.

Not unlike Margaret Atwood who was wholly unable to extend the logic of her stated view to those kinds of questions, mainly because she seemed unable to get past what her social circle thought was "progressive. "

I think time isn't going to be kind to that approach but it's a minor blip in terms of her life and I don't think it will really be part of how she's remembered.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/09/2026 11:54

If it’s considered right wing to not want vulnerable women raped in prison by violent males then the left have truly lost their way.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/09/2026 11:55

riod · 21/09/2026 11:10

they do. And they’re female, so not a threat to
women’s sports, women’s prisons, women’s domestic violence shelters, women’s academic competitions and prizes etc etc etc.

More relevant to the point I think the poster is trying to make (maybe?), they’re not a threat in any way to other men! Or someone pretending to be a trans man isn’t a threat to other men.

We need to work out how to use public spaces so that everyone is safe and feels safe, and has the same ready access to the facilities they need, of all different kinds. The way to do that will probably involve compromise on the part of men in general, but they seem to be getting a free pass.

The group of people who are a threat to others are criminals, but they are overwhelmingly male. That’s the starting point in my eyes.

TempestTost · 21/09/2026 11:55

BIossomtoes · 21/09/2026 11:54

You know that has absolutely not been the demand of advocacy groups and trans activists.

BIossomtoes · 21/09/2026 11:54

first day on the internet? I mean five minutes of research would show you that a huge part of the validation is being accepted into spaces not meant for males.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/09/2026 11:59

Stingycow · 21/09/2026 10:50

You can start here. I mean, I'm sure you'll take issue with it because it's published in the Journal of Gender Studies, but that's not really my issue.

And yes, I agree. Hounding DP for defending trans rights is a bad look.

Sally Hines. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

the woman who said that before the enlightenment the female skeleton didn’t exist. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

oh please.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/09/2026 12:00

BIossomtoes · 21/09/2026 11:54

And you know this how?

Because of the outcry of being “othered” when asked to use unisex facilities and leave females alone.

Ah well, if only Margaret Atwood had your intellectual subtlety and insight! Imagine the books she could have written! 😂
