I think the man just existing will haunt his premiership.

Possibly, as people can be a bit thick. ‘Social security’ is clearly a much wider thing than ‘benefits’, which I assume you are thinking of.

Yup, it never works - Gordon Brown and Rishi Sunak both became PM without a vote and neither lasted long. Both well and truly voted out by the public at their first general election. If AB survives to the GE, which is highly unlikely, he won’t win it.

If you read beyond the headlines he is saying that he isn't going to make crude cuts at welfare directly for NS. Rather he is going to find ways to increase national security in other ways whilst slowly reducing the welfare bill.

Crude cuts on welfare usually fails and often ends up costing the taxpayer, in the long run, more. People often end up losing their houses, and in basic terms homelessness is expensive for the state, children are at more risk of going into care, crime rates often rise. Even if you don't care about the impact on the people, all of these things cost more financially to manage.
