To think that Burnham’s words are going to haunt his premiership?

‘…national security can’t come at the expense of social security…’

I actually think the UK is obsessed with war and defence. I know it's a lucrative business for our economy but it's also very profitable for those billionaires, who stand to gain from our current levels of unrest.

How much does, say Ireland, need to spend on defence? I suspect they spend much less, partly because they are less of a target. Tending not to get as involved in other countries issues.

Imdunfer · Today 09:11

I thought it was a political naive thing to say.

Without national security there is no social security.

You clearly have no idea about the sort of man he is.
He may not get everything right, but his intentions are always admirable.

He isn’t saying national security isn’t important and vital, rather we shouldn’t be completely prioritising that over getting people off the streets for example, or over the NHS and education system, care sector etc etc. He’s right. He was right about Palestine as well yesterday. I feel like probably for the first time in my life we have a PM who speaks some sense. It’s incredibly refreshing.

But security is the priority over everything else.

And real austerity is what happens in a war.

I don’t know the exact ins and outs but I’m pretty sure our army/navy covers Ireland so of course it’s cheap for them

Presumably you were in a coma from around 2010 till recently. The country-wrecking stuff was all done before this Labour government gained power.

The country wrecking stuff was done by successive governments of all colours.

And unless you’ve been in a coma, I suspect William Beveridge and Clement Attlee would be ashamed of the current Labour Party and the state of the welfare state.

Ireland have declared themselves neutral since before WWii.

They don't need to spend any money on defence because they know full well that the UK cannot allow them to be invaded when they are so close and will be forced to defend them.

Yeap of course. Labour doing so well. They kicked out Starmer because he was doing too well for country, nothing to do with the complete failure of his government at all. What bullshit.'

They are a voter base. Sorry to disappoint.

This is quite a funny post. Have you heard there is a war currently going on in Europe?

Ireland piggybacks off our defence and we unfortunately can't make them defend themselves due to geography and our underwater cables. So they can spend their putative defence cash on fun things while we have to defend them.

We could spend every single penny we have as a nation and it would still be a drop in the ocean if the US or China decided that they wanted to invade us.

We are not the "great" invading power that we once were and we need to face up to that before we bankrupt ourselves.

Weren't you talking about deflection yesterday? I had so many posters coming at me, it was hard to keep up. Why shouldn't there be a thread on an important issue? Not only that, there's a Reform bashing thread every 5 minutes.

Without protecting our national security, there won't be any need for social security. He's no Churchill, is he?

Well Churchill turned the gun boats on Liverpool because the men were fighting for a living wage. He was a rampant racist. He advocated chemical warfare. Blamed the Bengal famine on the citizens. Said the Jewish people brought on their persecution. So I hope not.
If he fails, welcome to the far right.

That's not the negative attitude I assign to Great Britain.

We are still a nuclear power. Assuming the nukes still actually work. Defence is a deterrent. We need to be in a position where our enemies can't see weakness. We are weak at the moment hence why Argentina are sabre rattling about the Falklands again. They may succeed with Andy Burnham in charge.
