Rise of far right

1000 replies

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

I can trace family tree in England back to the 15th Century. However, I do have family heritage from a Scandinavian country that was only the last century. Oh dear, I suppose I fail your test.

Yep, you're out, sorry.

Then explain it?

You are just a bit confused and don’t want to look like an idiot so you will keep saying things like ‘absolute tosh, nice deflection, morons are out today, maybe a bit of ‘why should I explain it to you’ - basically anything to avoid answering the actual questions.

Well, I think having a foreign ancestor from Scandinavia has probably done untold damage to the "native population".

Untold damage because it seems that nobody actually wants to tell us how all this foreign ancestry is negatively affecting their day to day lives.

So it shall forever remain a mystery.

Yes, I don't recall when the world shifted it that way, the sort open acceptance and laughter at treating women violently. Of course it happened behind close doors but the lack of condemnation, the jokes about it, I can't think of any men in my life, Grandads, uncles, Dad, brothers that would have thought this is ok, in fact it would be the vehemently the opposite for my Grandad who probably would have tackled any man doing that!

I want to highlight the above post, again. I think this is so important. The men in your life sum up the men that I grew up with, as well. It really does demonstrate how truly warped Nigel and his Reform UK really are.

They are the opposite to true British values. They are the opposite of what we hold to be good and true. Their celebration of this attack on a woman, who does not agree with them, shows what vicious bullies Farage, Anderson and Jenrick actually are.

Which women are going to support that?

BlueDillieDillie · Today 18:08

If you are really interested in knowing who the Far Right is read about the history of Ratko Mladic who was buried today.
Then look for comparators.

DebbieSavage · Today 18:08

We need to get a lid on the rise in the far right before it gets out of control and the first things that needs to be done is banning social media sites like X so like minded people can't find a way to propagate their hate about the poor refugees coming over on boats. For crying out loud, the first Britons were actually Black, they have more of a right to be here than any of us do!

JoanOfThePark · Today 18:08

The cultural left increasingly shifted from individual equality towards group-based equity with greater emphasis on race, gender, sexuality and identity. So ideas such as “intersectionality, systemic oppression, privilege, decolonization” and DEI has become more influential across universities, media, corporations and public institutions. Speech and disagreement are increasingly framed through concepts of harm, safety and inclusion rather than solely through traditional free-expression principles. Political and social issues are now often interpreted through group power, representation and historical disadvantage rather than individual circumstances alone. Successive governments since around 2010 have increasingly of this belief and Starmer became almost the poster child of oppression/supression.

No-one who says enough to migration is vilifying migrants. But it is perfectly ok to say that there is a limit to migration (legal) and that the state should take action to completely shut down illegal migration, which it has not done. The men on boats are not a hallowed holy class and even by the Home Office’s own admission, not asylum seekers.

I don't know what you mean by Starmer being a poster child of oppression/suppression (maybe you would like to explain). But again, I think you are wrong in saying DEI has become more influential. Generally, I would say that there is significant pushback because of the swing to the right and it becoming a politically charged term. Which is a great shame, in my opinion.

I also think you are wrong about speech and disagreement being framed through concepts of harm, safety and inclusion. I would say they are being framed through grudge and populist nationalism and, I'm afraid to say, the lies of the likes of Nigel Farage.

So we will have to agree to disagree, I'm afraid. I did not by the way say the men on boats are a hallowed, holy class. But they, and the women and children with them are human beings and they deserve to be treated as such. And I go back to my earlier points, the problems of the British people are not the fault of migrants, they are the fault of failed government and, I would say, in part a hangover of the class system.

I don't understand how anyone can argue this is 'centrist' politics, in what world is this not alarming to people. On the otherhand, I feel hopeful that this 'politics' won't last.

TankFlyBossW4lk · Today 18:18

HermioneWeasley · Today 07:07

Yes, but the comparison is not the same

there is and never had been any problems caused by Jewish people. I think there is a legitimate conversation to have about immigration, and successive governments’ complete inability to assess those issues or even permit conversation about it has given oxygen to right wing parties.

Britain is a very centrist and tolerant country but also has a strong sense of fairness. The state of the Uk at the moment doesn’t feel fair. 2 years ago the population voted to get rid of the conservatives because they were failing. They didnt actually swing to the left and choose Labour, it was just a rejection of the failing party in power.

the situation is recoverable but will take some tough choices. Labour have shown they’re not prepared to do that - the mildest of welfare reform was utterly rejected by the party.

Really? This is what Hitler said about the Jews:
Destroying traditions: Hitler blamed modern art, literature, and media created by Jews for ruining traditional German morals.

Biological threat: Hitler viewed humanity as a struggle between different races and labeled Jews as a dangerous, "inferior" race.
Racial pollution: He claimed that mixing with Jews would weaken and destroy the German "Aryan" bloodline.

Robbing workers: He blamed Jews for inflation, the Great Depression, and the financial struggles of the German middle class.

Sounds pretty similar to me. Get a grip.

I agree with the OP, history is about to repeat itself.

*First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me*

Clavinova · Today 18:33

@Contain4 actually I don't think people understood that at all - in fact they believed the opposite: that it would give the UK more control over their borders because people from the EU would no longer be able to come and go, work, live etc easily, when the effect is that we have as much migration as ever, but its from outside the EU. Plus the EU no longer have a vested interest in preventing UK bound illegal migration because if they do end up in the UK, it is no longer an EU problem or coming out of their purse. We are having to do deals and pay France for their cooperation.

Sadly, I think that many, many British voters had no understanding at all about the benefits and costs of EU membership at all. In fact many of them don’t even understand the UK political or legislative process - a damning indictment of our education system really.

And many political parties - and the media - fed and exploited this ignorance.

Why did we have to do deals with France back in 2014/2015 when we had already paid billions in EU membership fees? Why did the Mayor of Calais hold us to ransom and threaten to block the port? Not very neighbourly:

That simply isn't true.

Where the line is drawn - you've heard the joke about someone who used to be a Tory whose views haven't changed but he's now "hard left". That's my DH - he always voted Tory, now he votes Libdem. I put the "hard left" in inverted commas, of course he isn't hard left, that's Corbyn or the Socialist Workers Party, but you get the idea. The line does move.

We used to talk about the loony left - maybe we now have a loony right. Although something DOES need to be done about the fact we have millions of unemployed (especially the under 25 and the over 50s) while so many jobs are done by immigrants. People might not want to do (elderly) care work but why do we need nurses or train guards or waiting staff from overseas? Employers need to step up and train people already in the UK. Recruit people where you need them - eg we may need MFL teachers from overseas as we are so dismal at teaching languages here. But we need to pick and choose.

And I am not keen on a load of Islamic men coming here illegally, especially when they are coming from/through safe countries. However, those protesting are probably abusing their wives at home so I have zero sympathy with their antics.

I thought it was going to be the stewards being heavy-handed but it was full on pulling hair, beating with a stick, etc. What sort of people are attending a Reform conference? But, Anderson and Jenrick - just sick.

Edited

@Jollygreygiantess I have reposted this for you. Anderson thinks he's really funny. It is uncomfortable but does reveal what you would be getting from them.
