AIBU to think migrant sex crime data should be published? And to wonder why Labour are blocking the release of that data?

Labour Blocks Release of Migrant Crime Data

'Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals, accusing ministers of withholding information that is “clearly and legitimately in the public interest”.

Among the signatories are victims of high-profile sexual offences and families of murder victims. One signatory is a 14-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Epping allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant, in the same Essex town where asylum seekers were housed at the controversial Bell Hotel.
Fiona Goddard, a survivor of rape-gang grooming who has campaigned publicly about her experiences, has also signed the letter.

Eight relatives of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker murdered by a Sudanese national, are also among those backing the demand.'

Can you link to that?

It’s easy to find.

This is what I could find out - so make of it what you will.

Freedom-of-information extracts of Ministry of Justice and Police National Computer data published in 2024–25 show that known foreign nationals accounted for roughly 14–15% of sexual-offence convictions in 2024 (commonly phrased as “one in seven”), with an additional share of convictions listed as “unknown” nationality that some outlets add to reach estimates as high as about 23% when combined .
Separate breakdowns focusing specifically on sexual assaults against women found foreign nationals made up about 26% of convictions in one recent year — a figure repeatedly cited by outlets and researchers using MoJ data.
At the charging and arrest stage, analyses by the Centre for Migration Control and force-level FOIs report thousands of arrests of foreign nationals for sexual offences — more than 9,000 in the first ten months of one recent year across 41 forces — and in London force data foreign nationals were reported to account for roughly 40–47% of those charged for sexual offences in 2024 when unknowns are excluded

The Centre for Migration Control is not some kind of respected research organisation. It is a one man band run by a right wing activist and former Reform member who agitates against immigration. I think it is really important to note that as is the fact that many or most of CMC’s claims have been found to be very unreliable.

How helpful. If it's easy to find then just link.

What's the problem with you doing that?

Really ?

Oh is it? Is it ok to use such a 'metaphor' about a Muslim person?

@mumumental Well, is it?

And @blossomtoes you've metaphorically (apparently) likened me to a pig but you still haven't answered the question .. why would releasing the data affect 'xenophobia?

Hi all. We're dropping by with a quick reminder to keep this to the arguments being made, rather than the character or motives of the posters making them.

We’ve had a lot of reports from this thread now. Robust disagreement is absolutely fine, but personal attacks are not and they do break our Talk guidelines. Please don’t use insults about other posters as a substitute for addressing what they’ve actually said.

We’ll continue to remove posts that cross the line, and if people keep breaking the guidelines after this warning we may need to issue suspensions.

This is so odd to me. You think that preventing people from hearing true facts prevents racist behaviour? Is your position that racism is well evidenced, but you do not like it, so you want to hide true facts?

This is such an odd position to me. It feels like saying "racists are of course correct, and have the facts on their side. But I dislike racism for non-fact-based reasons, so I would like the government to hide the facts."

To be clear, I am not a racist, and therefore I am fine if the government publish accurate information.

Yes, this confused me, too. If the data shows that migrants are no likelier to commit sexual assault than anyone else, why would releasing that data result in vigilante attacks? It makes no sense.

My posts crossed no line. It's disappointing to see Mumsnet kowtowing to racism and prejudice when you're in a strong position to oppose its normalisation.

Really ?

How do you make this connection? Is it because the guy at CMC cites their statistics in a highly selective manner to give a misleading impression, by chance?

To be clear, people of any political persuasion can play this nasty game. That is why we need to rely on professional statisticians and others who have been trained to eliminate bias for our data.

Let’s look at this
The migration observatory issued a report two weeks ago saying that the data
https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/migrants-and-crime-in-the-uk/
Non-citizens in England and Wales accounted for 13.1% (or 43,250) of cautions and convictions in 2024 and 12.1% of the prison population (10,450 foreign national prisoners) in June 2025 (Figure 1). There is currently no official estimate of non-citizens’ share of the adult population. However, Migration Observatory calculations suggest that by 2025, roughly 13.5% of the adult population were non-citizens. In other words, the overall rate of convictions and incarceration was roughly similar for citizens and non-citizens.
Foreign nationals made up 18.7% of entries into prisons in 2025, higher than their share of either convictions or the prison population. This is driven by the fact that non-citizens are less likely than British citizens to be granted bail while awaiting trial. See the section ‘Does the criminal justice system deal differently with citizens and non-citizens?’ below for more information

The most common non-UK nationalities of people in English and Welsh prisons at the end of 2025 were Albanian, Irish, and Polish.

Your comment wrt to London:
London force data foreign nationals were reported to account for roughly 40–47% of those charged for sexual offences in 2024

London as a whole is 41% foreign national population. Within the highest crime area, West London, 47% are foreign nationals. The second highest crime area in London is central London with 44% foreign nationals. In addition, 21 million foreign tourists were in London during 2024 and the number of arrests would have included foreign tourists as well. Based on this contextual information about the diversity of London, the data on London charges for sexual assault appears to show no evidence of foreign nationals being more likely to offend than British nationals.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 29/08/2026 12:30

If data were published anyway it only tells you about sexual crime which comes to court and is successfully prosecuted. The vast majority goes unreported.

Let me know what Reform or Restore propose with regard to tackling sex crime which is not race or immigration related. Let me know if they have any policies to protect or enhance women's rights which are not race or immigration related.

I won't be holding my breath.

Windsurf · 29/08/2026 12:31

NullaEffugium · 29/08/2026 11:38

It’s clear from the links to far right influencers in X and their substacks in the thread that many posters are drawing their (mis)information from known provocateurs who plainly have the agenda of stirring up racial discrimination and xenophobia under the faux concern of women’s safety.

Why though? As you are convinced this is the only reason, what is it? What is the reason?

What on earth do you think asylum seekers are going to do to babies and toddlers? You really must spell it out otherwise you are engaging in monstering people based on their ethnic background.

No, I think you will find I didn't say that. However CMC's methodology has been very much criticised by experts. Google what Ben Brindle from Oxford University has said for example.
