AIBU to think migrant sex crime data should be published? And to wonder why Labour are blocking the release of that data?

Labour Blocks Release of Migrant Crime Data

'Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals, accusing ministers of withholding information that is “clearly and legitimately in the public interest”.

Among the signatories are victims of high-profile sexual offences and families of murder victims. One signatory is a 14-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Epping allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant, in the same Essex town where asylum seekers were housed at the controversial Bell Hotel.
Fiona Goddard, a survivor of rape-gang grooming who has campaigned publicly about her experiences, has also signed the letter.

Eight relatives of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker murdered by a Sudanese national, are also among those backing the demand.'

Part of this is due to Labour treating victims so atrociously. It’s coming back to bite.

Why do you need to know?
The only reason I can think of that anyone would want it published is to stir up trouble. And there are enough people who already do that.
As others have said that information has never been published by any government. And I doubt it is even collected.
It isn't easy or cheap to collect information, either and there are many other things I would prefer the Government to spend money on

Figures from Germany (and others similar) show some nationalities committing sex crimes at about twenty times the rate of Germans. We also have immigration from those countries.

Unless we publish the data, people might assume that the threat pattern here is similar.

If it’s not, then publishing the data can remove a lot of unfounded fear and stigma.

Isn’t that good?

And if the pattern is the same here, then knowing that is important to help combat sex crime.

Isn’t that important?

What a load of scaremongering, right wing crap. There are rapists everywhere, in every society, and definitely including ours. There is no reliable, sufficiently large or high enough quality data to make any clear assumptions about ethnicity and rape (ONS). And why bother, since when race is counted in specific (eg geographical) situations, it shows is that 1. Most are white and 2. the racists refuse to believe it anyway.

What is "ours" ?

Have a look for the more or less Radio 4 programme on this. It explains what statistics are available and why it debunks the myths about non whites being more likely to commit these crimes.

Well that’s fantastic. By publishing this data we can remove this unfounded stigma.

Would you agree that’s a great thing to do?

(Also, I didn’t hear the more or less. Was the claim that all groups/nationalities have the same offending rate? Or was it that overall, if we consider everyone non-white in one great lump, the rate doesn’t differ from whites, considered as a lump? And do you think treating non-whites as one great lump makes sense analytically? I don’t).

It says;
A look into the tables shows that the 111.517 out of 190.695 suspects (58.5%) are actually not from the migrants, but from the people with German citizenship.

And in fact, your first link says;

To put things into context, it is also important to note that non-German suspects are clearly over-represented in the statistics on violence – accounting for 42.9 per cent – compared with their actual share of around 15 per cent of the German population

there are no crime statistics for people with a migrant background

The politician should have referred to current status - foreign nationals/people without German citizenship rather than people with a migrant background.

EU Factchecker, which is notably nonpartisan and rigorous, points out that one must look very carefully at the way German statistics separate out crimes by nationality.

They say that crimes committed by tourists are typically counted as crimes by short term immigrants and these skew the statistics significantly. This is discussed in one of the links posted by @NullaEffugium above, refuting some sensationalist claims and incorrect claims about crime in Germany and Denmark.

I assume you do understand that they do, really. And that you understand proportionality. I'll let you think about that and not patronise you by explaining it.

Yes, so if 80% of crimes are from white English males, then I’d rather concentrate on those 80%.
Simply fir (obvious) efficiency reasons.

Makes nonsense to cincentrate on ‘migrants’ if they are 5% of the rapes. Even if proportionally they are more likely to commit a rape. If we were sorting out every case agd stopping all rapes by migrants, it would make little dufference to tge safety of women

LuckyHazelFox · 29/08/2026 09:55

ClarkeandNewman · 29/08/2026 09:32

Yes. I asked someone (you? Not you? No idea) not to tiptoe around with euphemistic italics but come out and show the groups they were prejudiced against. You readily obliged.

I obliged to quote a foreign national group, that had a high representation in prison. So no, no evidence of racism or xenophobia. Unless you're saying the statistics are as racist as the IOC.

But if they are representing 5% (or whatever they represent. It will be low just because the % of migrants is low), then even avoiding every single rape from migrants will make little difference to women’s safety.

Id rather see the time, ressources, money directed towards the people who are the main offenders in numbers. Because that’s where the difference can be made.

Why is it ‘right wing’ to expect to see big differences in criminality between these groups?

The usual left wing analysis is that crime is caused by poverty, deprivation, trauma. And the (undoubtedly true) fact that men are overwhelming perpetrators.

A lot of the public concern relates to asylum seekers.

How can you take a left wing view of crime and not expect significantly greater crime rates from asylum seekers. If you don’t expect that, you have to junk your whole analysis about what causes crime.

That would require them to be a bit more nuanced. Great post.

I work with this kind of data. I get the appeal, but I don't think this route is going to give what people want. Having the data published from the MoJ is very unlikely to get the true figures people are after.

The collection is vey inconsistent, it's generally self-reported at first and sometimes not updated if further information is found, many times the nationality field is blank and the systems I've used only allows one nationality to be put in. As pp said, while there are continuous pushes to update our systems to the latest and greatest (mostly to be able to cut admin staff, they literally send emails celebrating this), they're not effective for what they're meant to do, nevermind this sort of thing.

Within the MoJ and its subdepartments like HMPPS and HMCTS, IME nationality is really only used if someone needs a translator for a language with a lot of regional variation like Arabic and when data needs to be passed to the Home Office. The Home Office is in charge of checking nationality, not any part of the MoJ. If you're ever in court when a known foreign national is sentenced for more than a year, the judge often openly states that anything to do with their immigration status is done by the Home Office and out of their hands. I've even heard it said to naturalised British citizens of serious crimes 'just in case' (and they won't be counted as foreign nationals in MoJ data).

I can't say anything about the data the Home Office has as I've no experience, but it seems that they have a better chance with serious crimes than the MoJ, particularly if you're after safety and wanting the violent foreign nationals deported - that's a Home Office decision, not an MoJ one.

Thank you for this infusion of common sense, @TiredShadows . Much as I thought, though I am glad to learn of the functional boundary between MoJ and the HO.

I had hoped you would receive some public appreciation from posters supporting the OP. We can each think about why you have not.

The data can still be released. The objections Labour used were rejected by the ICO.

You didn't understand what I was saying so you used it as an excuse to exercise your prejudice.

The thing I find about racists is they're not deep thinkers. They stop at knee jerk reactions and anything that might superficially reinforce their position, albeit without credence, authority or context. It causes a dilemma. Is it worth countering that emotion-based onslaught for the purpose of making a stand, or are you just getting drawn into a mire of school playground abuse, silly insults and yet more "facts are what I say they are" sloo?

TL:DR on balance is it worth arguing with racists?

Not necessarily.

If that 5% is made up entirely of Japanese (using the German data), your overall rape count falls by a couple of percent. That’s because Japanese have lower criminality than Germans (about one-third of the rate).

If that 5% is made up entirely of the group with the 20x rate, on the other hand, your overall rape count roughly doubles.

Applied to UK reported rape figures, it’s the difference between reducing by several thousand or increasing by about 75,000 a year.

That’s why the rates matter.

If it debunks myths, as some are certain it will, then yes why not do that
