To think.that people continuing to put up tatty flags on lamposts are imposing on communities?
There are people putting them up again near roads. They hang by a thread eventually causing a clear hazard. It looks disrespectful and costs money to make safe. And the intention looks less and less like they give a fig for anyone especially in diverse places.
Everywhere has a civic hub where flags are flown properly at the proper time.

Yes, there's a bunch near us that keep going up, in a very diverse area, but the council say they can't take down because people keep harassing council workers doing it. Everyone I know in the area dislikes them, it feels very out of keeping. It's sad that the British flag should make period feel that way but unfortunately there are too many people determined to use it as a symbol of exclusion and telling people that they don't belong.

Really? Where?

NI, in loyalist communities is a huge thing.
Typically union flags are interspersed with Israel flags and orange order flags.

Queenjames · 22/08/2026 17:37

No private citizen should hang any flag from public property without permission. Seems a sensible rule to me. And if they do, the Council should remove them.

I have seen a lot of Israel flags from lamp posts though.

Good! I love them and the Union and St George cross flags. However, the pro Palestine flags are totally out of place.

Of all the things that are untrue, this is the most untrue 😂😂😂

I don't, but our Restore volunteers do, they also distribute leaflets.

attichoarder · 22/08/2026 17:47

I don’t see anything wrong with the Welsh and Scottish flags and therefore don’t have a problem with either the Union Jack or George cross. The flags belong to the nation where they are flown. That is very different to other flags flown in the U.K.

How are Palestine flags out of place, but Israel flags aren’t?

And the leaflets they put through my letter box go straight in the bin. Rather than wasting paper and money on leafletting, better to spend the time and resources on removing the plastic tatty flags on lamposts that make areas look so chavvy.

You love Israel flags?
Odd.

Why not Australia flags?
Or Russia?
Or Mexico flags?
Or a Croatia flag outside your house?

What is it about being English that makes you love Israel flags specifically?

I've seen the Israel flag flying with Combat 18 flags.🤯

Support for mental health in children / teens, pot holes, crime. Those are important enough to worry about imposing on communities,
Flags? They shouldnt be tatty - maybe you could chip in and get some new ones. unlessa of course your just upset because its nationalistic. Did you worry about the palastine ones?

It’s the Knights Templar flags that get me!

LlynTegid · 22/08/2026 18:12

They are to all intents and purposes a form of graffiti. Very different from flying a flag from a public building.

Blarn · 22/08/2026 18:16

I live near where the raise the flags thing started. They look so very tatty now. Some are just strips of material hanging off lamp posts and caught in trees. If they put that much effort into something like cleaning up litter in the local area or channeled those funds into a youth centre in one of the closed down shops or old clubhouses, Weoley Castle would have had something to be really proud of.

Ours look like something even Steptoe would be embarrassed by.

Where are the staunch defenders of the England flags? Aren’t they embarrassed by the shoddy condition of their beloved flag that represents their beloved country? It seems not.

Round here they're in very good condition. If they get 'tatty' they get replaced by the far-right local pensioner thugs who come on their push-bikes.

Never seen a Palestine flag on a lamppost or roundabout, so no.

Weird. I see Palestine flags on public spaces every time I go out.

itsallaroundus · 22/08/2026 18:20

YANBU, they’re unsightly and ugly.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 22/08/2026 18:21

No flags around here. The odd painted roundabout and that’s about it.

It's common in some parts of NI.

You should tell that to Nottinghamshire Council. They spent a load of taxpayer money, meant for potholes, SEN children etc, on flags.😱

on public lamp posts? Or in student windows?

frockandcrocs · 22/08/2026 18:38

They’re a fucking state. Cheap shit that some moron has climbed up a lamppost with grubby hands all over it, to secure with cable ties. And yet they claim to have ‘pride in the flag’. Treat it with some fucking respect, then.

Not to mention the cheap AF materials, from china. Such pride.

The only flags that I’ve seen that look like the ones you’ve described are the Ukraine flags.

Are they an imposition, or is it only the England flags you have a problem with?

Marroon · 22/08/2026 18:39

How many of these flags do we think were manufactured in Britain? 😂
Nothing like cheap Chinese shit to say National pride.
