To think.that people continuing to put up tatty flags on lamposts are imposing on communities?
There are people putting them up again near roads. They hang by a thread eventually causing a clear hazard. It looks disrespectful and costs money to make safe. And the intention looks less and less like they give a fig for anyone especially in diverse places.
Everywhere has a civic hub where flags are flown properly at the proper time.

Yep, it certainly gives an impression that "Hi, we're a bunch of racist chavs here!"

That's your interpretation. I don't see how that can be intimidating. Other countries proudly fly their flag without this overwrought handwringing - why can't we?!

People in Ireland fly our flag with pride all the time during sporting events or on St paddy’s day. It’s the national flag.

But there has also been times where it has been hijaked by other groups and used for different meanings like the IRA or more recently far right groups. Context matters. It’s not the flag itself.

I totally agree they look "common" and would definitely put me off buying a house in that area

Exactly this. I am house hunting now and if I see flags on the lamp posts I don’t even bother stopping. Dirty old, worn out flags sadly flapping about in the wind is not patriotic, it’s pathetic looking and frankly the opposite of patriotic!

Well exactly ! But I cannot lie driving round a roundabout over a busy by pass with a large couple of square meters of material flapping towards me just metres away from my car only secured by one corner to the bridge....that's what I saw. I called 999, because I could see how it could unfold. And I saw this in different places more than once
Just because it never happened yet doesn't mean it can't. ..

large couple of square meters of material

All square metres are the same size - they don't come in small/medium/large.

Can't believe you called 999.

They always looked tacky but now they’re weather beaten and look like floppy rags.

Well try to believe it. ' Yes there was a pile up because a windscreen got draped.....but at least my report was gramatically correct your honour'....
