Is this level of bill splitting normal?

Renting with DP. We don’t pool wages so split our food shops. I’m happy with a rough estimate , he insists on going item by item on the recipes so it’s fair. I feel like he’s taking it too far now though. Some examples from the past week (we do 2/3 medium size shops a week rather than one big one):

-him thinking he’ll eat an extra bag of crisps than me so paying like 30p extra
-I only have weetabix occasionally so I had to pay about 20% of the total
-from tonight and what prompted me to post - I’ve had a stomach bug which I’m struggling to shift so I had to pay a higher % towards the loo roll.

This isn’t normal, surely!? He earns well and has no reason to worry about money.

This is obsessive sounds like he has OCD.

IJustMight · Yesterday 21:50

He's not a keeper

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · Yesterday 21:52

There are some batshit posts on here about finances but this really does take the biscuit.

I’m not sure if I want it to be a troll post or I’m just here for more crazy splits. What happens if someone is off work sick, do they have to pay extra toward the electricity bill.

But if it’s true, you have to tell him this is bonkers. Maybe special items (booze, expensive toiletries or whatever), but just split the food shop 50:50. If he’s adamant, run for the hills!

Swissmeringue · Yesterday 21:53

Am I the only one who would find this so stressful I'd eat all the crisps? Then patio him when I received the invoice naturally.....

Springtimeinsunshine · Yesterday 21:54

No kids on horizon, in the future for sure but not a while yet,

Hell no, don't procreate with him. He'll make your life a misery once you are trapped with kids. Get rid asap.

PretendToBeToastWithMe · Yesterday 21:55

Who in the world has time to sit and calculate this all 2/3x each week?!?!

BB1823 · Yesterday 21:56

This has to be a wind up, surely. No one would split household costs like that, would they?
If this is a serious post, the toilet roll split is going to way too far. He must have too much time on his hands to be calculating costs in this much detail.

Studyunder · Yesterday 21:57

Tun fast and run far!

Meand2Ls · Yesterday 21:57

I’d honestly rather be single than this

‘Be very effective with contraception’ is really excellent advice imo

To be fair, being with someone who splits the cost of loo roll is probably very effective contraception. I would permanently clamp shut.

I didn’t really bring the subject up before we moved in, I assumed it would be an equal split and even out over time. No kids on horizon, in the future for sure but not a while yet, we have moved in together quite early in the relationship but it seemed right at the time when he suggested it.

Any guy who wants to move in together early in the relationship is a walking red flag. It’s never a wise thing to do…the whole point of dating is to find out about each other before moving in, and in early stages, it’s too easy to be on best behaviour for a few hours. Got to get past that stage before even considering sharing the same living accommodation

Andnowshesatoddler · Yesterday 22:00

Oh look OP a mariachi band with red flags trying to get your attention.
He sounds hideous.

Livpool · Yesterday 22:01

Fucking hell
I couldn't be with someone who is counting the sheets on the toilet paper whilst I'm mid vomiting bug. Nope. Back to the ocean with him!

Ask for a refund on the food you can’t eat surely OP?!

No, this is ridiculous. I couldn’t and wouldn’t live like this.

Sashimiandhisthunderpaws · Yesterday 22:02

Does he have a spreadsheet for this/is he an accountant? 😂

You need to start dragging your arse across the garden grass like a cat to reduce your loo roll spend.

Each buy your own stuff keep in separate lockable cabinets/storage.

Even better, chuck this one back.

Dancer48 · Yesterday 22:02

Completely bonkers...in years of house sharing, including a mix of broke students living with professionals, I have never heard anything so mad.

How is he apart from that? I'm not sure it's even tightness if he's insisting on paying more for weetabix and crisps. Is he really particular/obsessive about other things?

BrightYellowDaffodil · Yesterday 22:02

Honestly OP, it won't get any better. I too moved in with a partner quite soon after we got together, he was always funny about splitting things and somehow I was always 'owing' him Hmm

The low point was when he deducted 50p from 'his' share of the weekly shop because I'd chucked a cheap bag of carrots for my horse in with the shopping.

Cardhey · Yesterday 22:03

What a tight arse!!! Get rid.

bakingdisasterqueen · Yesterday 22:05

Weigh his food and charge him accordingly. I bet he eats way more than you.

Morepositivemum · Yesterday 22:05

Just Before you said he earns well I thought, I bet he’s a high earner. This is how the well off stay well off, I’ve numerous egs of a well off relative (young male, not that it makes a difference but😉😅) asking for minuscule things to be organised or split to the nth degree to save a few euro while at the same times making everything extraordinarily difficult for everyone! I feel for you op

Andnowshesatoddler · Yesterday 22:06

So I've just got in bed and my brain is now wondering how you split the laundry costs? If he sleeps on 3/5th of the bed and you 2/5th do you split to this ratio?

Easilyforgotten · Yesterday 22:06

You've been poorly and his response wasn't to get you medication, fluids, and things to tempt your appetite, but to charge you extra for loo roll? You can't possibly see a future with this man, can you? Where will it end? It's not even a scientific split, he's guessing what you will each use. Exhausting and unnecessary.

SleeplessInWherever · Yesterday 22:06

My ex husband was like this.

Ex. Husband.

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 22:06

Oh, no. Just, no.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · Yesterday 22:07

😂😂😂

charged you more for loo roll 🙈😂

I’m sorry but that’s hilarious and very obviously not normal.

Shloopie · Yesterday 22:08

And your fanny hasn't turned to dust? You're actually attracted to this man?
