Is this level of bill splitting normal?

Renting with DP. We don’t pool wages so split our food shops. I’m happy with a rough estimate , he insists on going item by item on the recipes so it’s fair. I feel like he’s taking it too far now though. Some examples from the past week (we do 2/3 medium size shops a week rather than one big one):

-him thinking he’ll eat an extra bag of crisps than me so paying like 30p extra
-I only have weetabix occasionally so I had to pay about 20% of the total
-from tonight and what prompted me to post - I’ve had a stomach bug which I’m struggling to shift so I had to pay a higher % towards the loo roll.

This isn’t normal, surely!? He earns well and has no reason to worry about money.

😂 I’m sorry but this has to be a wind up! You have to pay for more toilet roll beauties you’ve been poorly! Surely you’re having us on! This isn’t true!

Zanatdy · Yesterday 21:34

What have I just read. That is not normal, paying more for toilet roll as you’re sick. I’d be walking.

pearlsclutchedhard · Yesterday 21:34

Ps when you’re feeling better please eat his crisps

Thing is... these people do exist so even if this is a wind up, these people are out there.

Am sorry, how did you not laugh at him over the crisps and the loo roll? Honestly, he needs to know how petty and ridiculous he is being. I take it he never treats you for dinner? Has fun on your b'day? Does he price match you, gift for gift?!

I couldn't live with someone like this. I'd give him a chance to see how silly he is being then probably give up if he doesn't change. Not even flat shares of non-couples would be like this.

Coconutter24 · Yesterday 21:35

I have definitely read this post before on MN (and I doubt it was his ex)

Dontwanttheseboobies · Yesterday 21:36

Nope definitely not normal!

Bugling · Yesterday 21:36

Please realise that this level of control will only end in a fucking awful situation for you. Loo roll?! Is he going to listen at the door and calculate how much he thinks you are pooing? This really is insane, and I’ve read about a lot of weird financial abuse situations.

lifeturnsonadime · Yesterday 21:38

This man is a red flag. He will be financially abusive in the future. Run.

He’s not known me when it has been my birthday yet so I’ll find out next month..he hasn’t mentioned any plans for it yet.

I actually laughed at the toilet roll because it's so ridiculous 🤦.
Not normal, I could not stand this. Get rid.

mrsscroodledoodle · Yesterday 21:40

oh my lord, that is absolutely MENTAL.

You need to run away, fast. And be very effective with contraception. Can you imagine the divorce settlement / custody battle with a man like this?

foodlovefood · Yesterday 21:40

That’s crazy. We split it 50/50. To be fair I snack more. Plus I buy for my lunches and breakfast. He eats at work. So really food shop is for me. He would happily eat ready made meals. I cook from scratch but evens out in the end.

you can’t live like this.

Penguinzz · Yesterday 21:40

Omg no bloody way 😂😂😂😂😂

summater · Yesterday 21:41

I'd bin him off, fairly easy if you haven't got DC, renting and both earning

‘Be very effective with contraception’ is really excellent advice imo

huuskymam · Yesterday 21:43

That is the most insane thing I've read tonight.

Swissmeringue · Yesterday 21:44

Are you sure he's an actual human and not a robot?

itsgettingweird · Yesterday 21:45

That is odd!!!

Id suggest to him to have a joint account for food and utilities etc.

pay proportionately into that account and do all food shops from it.

if je declines id be seriously thinking about your future together

You’ve been together for less than a year and have moved in together? Way too fast. I noticed he suggested it. Do you do all the cooking, cleaning etc and if so, I hope he lays for it?

I’m hoping this is a troll thread. If not, you moved in quickly. Time to move out.

PrincessofWills · Yesterday 21:46

I can't believe these people exist. It's ick making behaviour . . .

Cooking he probably does slightly more of, maybe a night extra. I do more cleaning than him.

Oh no, don't through him back, someone else might get him.

The only solution is patio the bastard but not before he pays you half for the shovel and patio material...

😂😂😂 hey, I just wasted some wine spitting it across the room lol. Op, food is 50/50 regardless of who eats what. My DP eats 90% of our food and I don’t care. If he sent me an invoice if I ate the last fondant fancie he’d be under the patio.

Dump or don’t live with him. There’s loads of normal men out there you could waste money with.

YouBelongWithMe · Yesterday 21:49

Raise your bar.

What on EARTH have I just read??!! How can you think this is okay or normal???

Herestoanewallotment · Yesterday 21:49

Hit the wrong button and I can’t change it on my phone.

YANBU.
