To ask when we lost sense of basic social etiquette?

I got the train after work today and realised people just have no manners at all. Barging on the train before people had got off, not pausing to allow people out of their seats when getting off, being noisy and disruptive, just generally being unpleasant.

AIBU to ask what is wrong with people and when did we become like this? It’s sad!

Add onto this people allowing their children to shout and misbehave in public!

Yes, it's pretty awful sometimes. Just call it out. 'Wait' works with a pointed finger! So does 'please remove your feet from the seat' and 'I don't wish to hear your personal business, please take your phone off speaker'.

I think I must have a 'don't mess with me' scary look.
It worked on two teenagers fighting punching each other on the floor as well. 'Stop that now'. And they did . . . 😂

I don’t think I’m scary enough for that!

also - teenagers being horrid to people in public. I know they’ve always been snide but what I’ve seen this afternoon has been awful

It got noticeably worse after lockdown and has continued to deteriorate in my opinion. It was like
people forgot how to behave around other people and in public.

Evaka · Yesterday 18:19

Where do you live? I'm in a tough part of London and just never see what you're describing. Yes people listen to their phones sometimes without headphones but no barging etc. Intrigued as to where you're seeing this.

I agree.

What Princess ofWills said.

Standards diluted with the introductuon of huge comps imo. I try really hard at checkouts to be charming, rather than comment on the lack of please and thank you. I find the lads more personable.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 18:20

Yep, it's horrible. Lack of decency throughout public life now and behind the wheel..

The south west!

it’s awful. No regard for others, teenagers just openly bullying people at the bus station, pushing onto buses and trains without any regard for people getting off, kids screaming and having tantrums.

I’m in the southwest too. For balance, I find the teenagers in our town lovely, they look scary in groups but will move to let me pass on the pavement and say thank you when I make way for them.

I do know what you mean though, on buses and trains everyone’s behaviour seems feral. It’s really noticeable how bad things have got when we use public transport abroad and people are falling over themselves to offer us their seat- and we’re not that decrepit!

EvelynBeatrice · Yesterday 18:33

It can be awful I agree. But there are decent people. On a visit to Bristol last year to visit youngest son, I got lost near station and a couple of people asked if I was ok and tried to give directions. ( Pity for red faced, puffing laden, mum type presumably squinting in pathetic fashion at her phone).

I didn’t get much further and asked two young guys for directions. They helped me very readily, one berating the other for swearing when disagreeing with him “in front of someone ‘s mum” 😁

I find Bristol centre a bit druggy and edgy for my tastes, but the people are generally very friendly and polite.

They’re absolute cunts here.

Just seen a group of them waiting for the bus. A bus turns up and the driver gets off to change, shutting the doors.

So they decided to press the emergency button to open the door, get on and dick about on it and open the driver’s cab.

That now means two buses are delayed as the driver of the bus im on tries to secure the other bus - but they just did the same to this one! There’s no point in trying to call the police because they just won’t turn up.

They also pushed in front of me in the queue when I’ve been queuing for 25 minutes 😒

We were in Spain on holiday and getting off a lift - a woman tried to charge on before we’d got off - a man who was in the lift with us had a massive go at her and ushered us off, brilliant!

Chocolatefrenzy · Yesterday 18:36

I get cross when you step aside to let someone through , a door or a busy shopping aisle and they don't say thankyou aaaaahhhh!

Yes! Or when you pause to let someone past you on the pavement if they’re walking the other way. Also, when slow walkers don’t pause to let you through!!

I refuse to believe “nice” teenagers exist at this point. They all seem feral these days.

This drives me up the wall. But you only need to see children’s’ behaviour in school - and in some cases, the parents’ attitude toward that behaviour….

5128gap · Yesterday 18:49

Its always a bit lawless on the trains in August. Theres a lot of extra people who don't normally use them and don't understand 'the rules' eg thinking you can say "this seats taken" to save a table while your friends and family straggle on after you, lots of luggage and lots of kids.
This annoys the regular commuters who have their own etiquette and habits and have found a way to tolerate their journey, but extra stressors as above push them over the edge. They then seem rude to the infrequent travellers.
Its the train companies fault for inefficient and over crowded services, but people turn on each other instead of getting annoyed with the service provider.

HelenaWilson · Yesterday 18:53

Or you hold a door for an elderly person or someone with a pram, and half a dozen others follow, instead of letting you go through. Always tempted to let the door shut in their faces, but never quite had the nerve.

Schoolchildren round here have always barged onto buses regardless of who else is waiting. Some drivers won't open the doors unless they're all lined up with bus passes ready to show.

I agree that since Covid people don't stand back and allow passengers to get off the train. They push forward so there's no space and you have to walk into them if they won't move. Have seen this in lots of places, not just my home area.

An elaborate bow with an icy "Oh no, thank you", is the correct response to such people (just out of earshot, of course - I'm a coward at heart).

Or, "Well, fuck you very much", said in a cut glass accent.

KitsyWitsy · Yesterday 18:56

I've just flown home from America and it was awful. People jumping queues at the airport because they are too special to stand in it. People watching phones with the volume on. Kids out of control or playing loud games/shows on phones/tablets. Agree about the barging, we had that on the train as well. No patience for me and my heavy suitcases.

NC9000 · Yesterday 18:57

IMO

When women made a huge point about being equal, and how it was 'offensive' to have men open doors for them etc, men stopped caring about etiquette because they would literally get yelled at for holding doors open, society doesn't care about older people and shoves them into nursing homes, sees them as a nuisance because they're slow and a drain on society etc, so they get pushed around, we're told the world is overpopulated so people resent children.

On top of that, we're told to not say anything to anyone that could be 'offensive' and we can't 'judge' which means we can't say anything at all or we are accused of all sorts of nonsense. Everyone is on the defence. Everyone's default mode is anger and self righteousness.

The only time society seems to come together is if it's a big narc sesh where we turn on one another due to a news alert on the BBC. Otherwise, everyone is incredibly individualistic, believes everyone else is of lesser intellect and entitled.

Our high trust society is being chipped away while everyone screams and points at one another.

It's interesting to witness.
