Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

How crass. Why would that be any of your business? Is it only online that you don't understand how to behave appropriately or do you carry that through to your everyday life?

Even the DWP don't ask such things. The brass neck of some people on here is ridiculous.

I have 3 teen DSs who receive disability benefits, the extra costs we face because they are disabled include things such as:

  • Higher electricity costs - medical equipment (feed pumps, seating, bed, rise and fall bath, changing table, nebs, hoist, through floor lift, etc.). DS1&3 have EOTAS/EOTIS, some of which is delivered from home so some days they are both home with up to 4 extra staff when others their age would be in school with no staff at home, DS1 has carers at home so sometimes there are 2 extra people in the house using electricity.
  • Higher gas costs - we need the heating on higher and longer for DSs’ medical conditions and DS1’s reduced mobility. Because DS1&3 are at home more during the day, the heating needs to be on more than if they attended schools - both for their needs and because there are other people working in the house.
  • Higher water costs - DS1’s clothes/bedding etc. need changing more than the average person. This is more than a bit of extra washing. His specialist bath uses more water than many conventional baths. He also needs washing more. With carers and education staff in the house, there are more people using our water.
  • Higher food costs - for medical reasons.
  • Higher clothing costs - sensory needs and DSs wear through clothes more quickly.
  • Motability - the AP and adaptations. DS1’s current vehicle cost over £15k. That is on top of the monthly amount.
  • Car parking charges and fuel costs - we have to drive places we would otherwise walk. Not all car parks offer free blue badge parking. More hospital trips.
  • Equipment - Not everything is funded. We are lucky we have had a lot of charity grant funding for equipment that isn’t funded. For things such as SN car seat, SN buggies, bike trailer, specialist seating and some other equipment, but not everything is funded or has charity funding available. From the little things such as slider mitts, incontinence swim products, topping up the incontinence products provided because the NHS supplies aren’t enough even though we get a lot more than many to bigger expenses such as topping up the funding to have a H-frame hoist because only a single track hoist would be funded even though the OT recognised a H-frame would be better and was really needed. Not to mention all the things we buy in the hope they will help but don’t.
  • Costs associated with hospital admissions.
  • Medical assessments and treatment - assessment and medication for DS2. The medication has now been taken over by the NHS, thankfully.
  • Pre-action letters to hold the LA and ICB to account. I can write my own, but my LA laughs and says good luck finding someone with a legal aid contract to take it further.
  • Independent assessments for EHCP purposes to hold the LA to account - although the LA contributed to these costs with the settlements from previous complaints.

These are just some examples of the additional costs, I could could continue.

Edited

Clearly his diability isn't simply ADHD and the PIP isn't really providing support for his ADHD symptoms it is his physical symptom. ADHD alone does not require feed pumps, seating, bed, rise and fall bath, changing table, nebs, hoist, through floor lift, etc. or motobility cars.

Where the voting public (and we do live in a democartic society) are bothered about the cost of PIP for ADHD, neurodivergence or depression is when it is a standalone diagnosis.

@KeepPumping

Farage is a performer, I think he likes being a disrupted.
To be PM ge's have to turn up to fhe office every day, and night, PMs questions etc etc.
He would be under scrutiny, be held accountable- the issue of the £5m shows he really doesn't like thato

I'm trying, as a voter, to understand what a parent of a child with ADHD (as an isolated condition) has to spend PIP on that all/ majority of parents don't have to spend on their kids.
Why is it crass to want to make an informed choice about the political party i vote for?

Interesting that Reform wants everybody back in the office, does that mean Farage might actually turn up at Westminster and vote, or be in his constituency office ever. No of course it doesn't he's even lazier than Johnson.

Absolutely, well said.

Perhaps you missed my pp where I said “DS2 has ADHD (among several other diagnoses including an LLI).” Or maybe you just ignored it?

Although DS2’s ADHD does result in higher electricity, water, clothing and food bills. It does result in equipment being bought. It did result in medical assessments costs. It has resulted in pre-action letters and independent assessments for EHCP purposes. It has resulted in more hospital trips.

DS2 does have a motabilty car. Even the LA acknowledge there is a need for transport.

I did also say I could continue listing costs associated with their disabilities. I would be here all day if I was to provide an exhaustive list.

Most of these costs don't seem to relate to an ADHD or Anxiety diagnosis.

It does a bit, doesn't it? With a side helping of "disabled people owe me an explanation of how they spend their money". Very Jeremy Clarkson-esque.

I will C&P my reply to the pp.

I will add that DS1&3 have anxiety as part of their presentation. Several things on the list are related to anxiety. For example, the higher electricity and gas bills related to their EOTAS/EOTIS packages because part of the reason for EOTAS/EOTIS is anxiety, some of the equipment bought to try is related to anxiety. Some of the higher water bills is. Some of the higher clothing costs is. Some of the assessments for EHCPs are related. Some of the transport costs are. Some of the car parking costs are.

How much of your own taxes are going to @inthequietofdawn for her disabled child?
Just a guess, but I would think it to be several decimal points behind 1 pence.
So, that is how much of your business it actually is.

I have no idea how they were paid for but Motobility was involved, according to the links.

OK - was involved.

That's progress. So I think we can agree that you can't get a BMW through motability now, present tense.

And regardless, the fact that you have no idea how they were paid for suggests maybe you should educate yourself. The taxpayer pays no more for someone using their enhanced mobility element for a motability vehicle than someone who uses it for something else - e.g. using taxis etc.

And the taxpayer pays no more for someone getting a BMW (when they were available) than a Skoda.

All I was going by was reading the links, some of which refused to load so I couldn't copy & paste them.
That's why I said it was confusing - it would appear that some of them haven't been upgraded.
I can't "educate myself" as you put it because the information I am seeking isn't either clear or up to date. So don't get all imperious with me because some dealers can't produce data that's relevant.

A stand alone diagnosis for any of those those is highly unlikely to get you PIP as yet again a diagnosis does not get you PIP, need does. I have 4 in my house with ADHD, autism and a string of other diagnosis needing a lot of support. Only one gets PIP.

Some do get PIP ‘just’ because of ADHD. It is about the functional impairment rather than the diagnosis.

You are looking at it the wrong way. The PIP (which is for over 16s) isnt awarded on a what costs do the parent have that other parents dont have basis.

Its awarded for a set if specific care, communication and mobility needs if the person can evidence them and they get enough points regardless of the cause.

I dont really see why being unable to execute a journey unaided, as an example, suddenly costs less if the reason is adhd, not learning disability, or autism not visual impairment. It either costs more to not being able to do this thing (evidenced) or it doesnt cost more.
