To expect everyone at my wedding to stick to the colour scheme?

I'm having an autumn themed wedding. I've asked everyone, all the wedding party, family and all the guests to wear autumn colours - brown, orange, yellow, red etc.
Some of the men want to wear grey suits but I am upset by this because I don't see grey as an autumn colour. They say they will wear autumn coloured ties and accessories but I said I want the suits to be in Autumn colours
Is this unreasonable?

Your close friends and family might follow the scheme but it's unlikely that everyone will understand what you're going for, remember that there is a colour scheme, or choose to go along with it. It's an unrealistic expectation for a number of reasons.

Why don't you compromise and let them wear their grey suits, but provide some orange and yellow hi-viz jackets for them to put on top? Win-win!

😂😂

MN seems to have an influx of bonkers people lately.

Bonkers1966 · 15/08/2026 21:45

Are you sure you have the emotional maturity for marriage?

You need to amp up the Zilla, bab.

Not just autumn colours; autumn media

I don't think the autumn colours is unreasonable but I think grey suits with autumn ties would fall in that.

My DP has just one suit and for us to buy a whole other just for one wedding would be really expensive.

I think if you offer to cover the bill its not unreasonable but its the idea that its expensive.

At least a dress you can easily reuse, but if they have a suit they probably don't need another so it would be a waste.

Erm.. autumn is famously the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness'.

Mist is grey.

Ergo, grey suits are autumnal.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/08/2026 21:46

Grey is an autumn colour. The skies are usually grey....

To be fair, I could well see Joe Lycett turning up in that!

Are you paying for the wedding party to hire suits or buy new suits then I think you can have more say over the wedding party. Wider than that you cannot state what colours people can wear. You can request but not kick off if they cant.

Minasama · 15/08/2026 21:47

It seems disrespectful to expect to dictate what people wear to a wedding. Brown is not regarded as an elegant colour for a suit. It will look odd if everyone is wearing toning colours.,

Sunseekers · 15/08/2026 21:47

Hilarious! Someone's bored tonight

Should they choose to humour you, female guests could buy a yellow, orange or brown dress for £40 and put it in on Vinted or marketplace afterwards.

For men, even a cheap brown suit would cost at least £100. They many never wear it again and would probably struggle to get rid of it.

No-one will have good memories of your wedding.

CheeseWisely · 15/08/2026 21:48

SURELY this is a wind-up.

Oscillating · 15/08/2026 21:49

DidYeAye16 · 15/08/2026 21:49

Is this a reverse? If its not you are being absolutely bloody ridiculous and a Huge bridezilla.

Tryagain26 · 15/08/2026 21:49

Telling people what to wear to attend a wedding is rude, very Inhospitable and also very expensive for people as it means they will all have to buy a new outfit in colours they might not like and that they might only wear once.
A wedding should be a celebration of two people declaring their committment to each other in front of their family and friends. Telling guests what to wear turns it into a photo opportunity with the guests as extras, not people you want to share your day with.

Uricon2 · 15/08/2026 21:50

Just imagine the grey suits are an homage to a leaden Autumn sky OP.

And stop being silly.

This. It seems very unlikely that the marriage will endure if this is the level of stuff she gets het up about. ----

Brackenandbrave · 15/08/2026 21:51

Just get them to glue some brown leaves on to their grey suits

bt1234 · 15/08/2026 21:51

I presume you're paying for all their outfits, including shoes etc to coordinate with your colour choices?
