AIBU to feel annoyed after a mum's sarcastic supermarket comment?

Msidontknow · 15/08/2026 17:23

In a local supermarket getting some bits - it's quiet and I'm taking my time. I come around to turn into the other isle and a young toddler age 2-3 is waiting/hanging around making it difficult for me to move. I wait for him to see me to move - I don't say anything or do anything as I'm not in a rush and he was just being a child - the mum sees me waiting, calls him over and says loudly 'he's not a mind reader'. I was taken back and lost my chance to respond which would've sounded something like ' I'm sorry for not rushing your son and waiting patiently for him to see me'.

The thought did cross my mind would she have said this if I was a different ethnicity?

Maybe it's the heat or the rudeness but I'm annoyed at the sarky comment towards me for just trying to be nice.

She’s rude. The correct course of action would have been to alert the toddler to your presence and ask him to let you pass while smiling at you to acknowledge your patience.

The best response was to ignore her idiotic comment. Well done.

Are you prone to over thinking situations? It’s so odd that you are giving an innocuous comment in a supermarket any further thought and somehow linking it to racism. To be “annoyed” is weirder still.

It’s not weird to be annoyed at someone being rude to you especially when she was being patient for a child who’s mother wasn’t caring that her son was blocking the aisle

Are you white?

I am, but am often taken for mediteranean.
However, If someone made a stupid remark NOT referring to my ethnicity, I would take it as just a stupid remark, not one driven by racism.

😮oh dear!! You're a tad clumsy with your words, are you not 🙄

"I was taken back and lost my chance to respond"

You fit in very well on Mumsnet then.

It seems almost everyone is 'taken aback, aghast, gobsmacked' etc to ever utter a word to whoever they've run here to complain about.

I really can't imagine how they manage to advocate for their children.

Edited

So you would say what the woman said to another person whilst your toddler was blocking an aisle and the person was patiently waiting, honestly if she said excuse me to the child the mum would probably have an issue with that too!
i honestly think I live in another dimension and no wonder Glasgow is known as being friendly as most people would either be taken aback or get a slap if a stranger spoke to them like that

I think there’s a difference between being black and looking Mediterranean when it comes to facing racism

She probably just felt a bit embarrassed that he’d got in the way. You could just have smiled and said “no problem “

she didnt feel "embarraesd"..she was being an entitled cunt...

She didn't face racism though, she faced a woman who allowed her kid to block the aisle and then get shirty about it....big difference.

No I don't actually live alone. Family of 4. I'm not stewing on anything. Was just disheartened at the time. But onwards and upwards.

But it seems you were only disheartened because you perceived her to be racist, rather than just a rude or embarrassed Mum?

What are you going on about?

I quoted the OP who said "I was taken back and lost my chance to respond"

Hence me mentioning all the other MNetters who say bugger all due to being 'taken aback' and 'aghast' etc but can't wait to run to Mumsnet.

How they advocate for their own children is beyond me.

Hope that's a bit clearer?

Sounds like she was stressed about shopoung w toddler - maybe someone had been particularly impatient with the child previously - and was rude. Im not sure I see how yr ethnicity is relevant, but I'm white so havent had to hear a lifetime of crappy racist comments.

they should put their brat in the trolley then..no need for them to be roaming unattended getting in the way of people...

What a strange thing to say, I’m white and have experienced plenty of racist comments. The OP didn’t mention her ethnicity so she could well be white?

Betazoid. Definitely would have reacted differently to a Betazoid.

Fucking hell. She was rude. Mumsnet is full of these replies lately which explains why the general public are getting ruder also.

Why on earth would you pander to somebody rude? Just ignore. I hate toddlers being left to wander around supermarkets.

2-3 y.o.perambulating in the isles? Utter savages. Should be firmly fastened either to a parent or to a buggy and not under our feet!

Don't be disingenuous. Some ethnicities are known for being on the receiving end of micro aggressions like this more often than others.

I dont doubt that some black/white/brown people have experienced racist remarks, just as some gay people have experienced homophobic remarks and females misogynistic remarks, but pinning a plain old rude remark on one of the above is simply looking to be the victim.

Some people are not racist, homophobic or exist...just bloody rude.

ForPeaceSake · 15/08/2026 19:30

@Msidontknow Something very very similar happened to me. A woman and her family were blocking the aisle but only for a moment so I waited until they moved and as I passed the woman said 'Say excuse me' in a very rude voice. I do find people are sometimes more confident in being rude to me than to my peers who do not look and dress as I do. When I answer them back in the same accent and tone they act shocked. They think they're picking on an easy, docile target.

The woman was rude, but don't let it spoil your weekend.

Completely agree. My comment wasn’t aimed at the poster.

BackOfTheMum5net · 15/08/2026 19:33

If you had asked her toddler to move, you’d just as likely have learned she’s part of the “Don’t you tell my child what to do!” brigade!

And it’s entirely possible she felt entitled to be rude to you because of race. We’ll never know.

As with many weird encounters in life, it’s more about her than you and best forgetting.

I am of Mediterranean ethnicity and yes there absolutely is. I get the odd remark but nothing like the constant drip, drip, brown or black friends do.

Not understanding that the colour of your skin affects how you are treated in the UK is the epitome of white privilege.
