AIBU to feel annoyed after a mum's sarcastic supermarket comment?

In a local supermarket getting some bits - it's quiet and I'm taking my time. I come around to turn into the other isle and a young toddler age 2-3 is waiting/hanging around making it difficult for me to move. I wait for him to see me to move - I don't say anything or do anything as I'm not in a rush and he was just being a child - the mum sees me waiting, calls him over and says loudly 'he's not a mind reader'. I was taken back and lost my chance to respond which would've sounded something like ' I'm sorry for not rushing your son and waiting patiently for him to see me'.

The thought did cross my mind would she have said this if I was a different ethnicity?

Maybe it's the heat or the rudeness but I'm annoyed at the sarky comment towards me for just trying to be nice.

No I don't actually live alone. Family of 4. I'm not stewing on anything. Was just disheartened at the time. But onwards and upwards.

I once had a horrible remark made by someone. It was more than just a grumpy person, but if I wrote down the words it wouldn't come across at all.

You could be right or you could be wrong.

It's impossible to discuss here in writing.

Portmore · 15/08/2026 18:15

I work in a supermarket. Alot of parents are very entitled. If you had said 'excuse me' that would have been wrong too.

Just don't give it another thought.

I work in an area where most people are the same ethnicity as me & I get it constantly so I wouldn't assume it was directed at you personally - it's just the entitlement of many parents that everyone should be revolving around their DC (not children in general just their own)

Why don’t you try us? No judgement. Just see what others think

Just one of those things, forget about it.
The mum was distracted trying to do supermarket shopping with a toddler- actually one of the worst tasks ever.
It does annoy me when people stand there waiting for you to move though instead of saying a simple “excuse me”, it can sometimes come accross as passive aggressive

In my case I am just painfully shy and also therefore happy to wait.

Needmorelego · 15/08/2026 18:17

How odd.
Why didn't you just say "Excuse me please... I need to get past" ?
(for a little child I might have added the word sweetie as in "excuse me sweetie" which I know some people might think it's a bit cheesy 😁).
How else are children meant to learn?
If you are just going to stand there then the mum was correct to say he isn't a mind reader.

I've ticked YABU because rude aggressive people are just rude aggressive people and sometimes racist too. I'm an ordinary white older woman and had a similar experience in Tescos. It was from a mother whose kids were buggering about on the floor (not toddlers, about 10-12 age range). I simply waited until she eventually shouted at them "get out the fckin way and off the floor". Once clear I proceeded to steer my trolley through at which point she bellowed at me "FCKING BITCH". I think I didn't show enough humble gratitude for her liking.
So that was nice..

Sherararara · 15/08/2026 18:18

It’s a toddler. It’s oblivious to your needs. It’s not going to get out of the way unless it’s told to. Hence her comment. Pretty simple
stuff.

thelegacyofdragons · 15/08/2026 18:19

You must belong to The Whisperfolk then?

Yeah I’ve heard they don’t even need gossip, they can just download the whole conversation directly from your brain.

Sorry OP, you might be right or you might be wrong. But, good of you to be patient and wait.

People can just be a bit rude sometimes. A lady in the supermarket once stopped me and asked why I was buying baby food for dd as it was really terrible and I should be making my own. I should have just not bothered to reply, but for some reason felt I needed to explain that I usually did, but that it was a one off for a very long haul flight we were taking. She quickly backtracked, not that it was any of her business. Try to just forget about it if you can.

Oh I would have relished responding to this woman!

”why am I buying a jar of baby food for my baby? I can’t be arsed to cook from scratch so it’s this or the little one staves”. Smile

Edited

But op was happy to wait, she is allowed to do so if she wants to without someone them being rude to her.

Im explaining why she got the comment she got. Also, how was the mother to know she was happy to wait. Just like her child she isn’t a mind reader. The fact she made the comment at all, which was more curt than rude, implies OP was standing there like a lemon. If she was happy to wait, she should have used her voice and responded “No problem, I’m happy to wait”.

AgentKim · 15/08/2026 18:23

I was in asda and I saw a girl with beautiful red hair, being a ginger myself, I said how lovely her hair was.she must have told her mum because she gave me a filthy look.
Some people are weird when it comes to thier children.

BIWI · 15/08/2026 18:27

For the sake of clarity @Msidontknow, what is your ethnicity? And why would you think that this might have come into the equation? What was the ethnicity of the other woman?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/08/2026 18:30

the mum sees me waiting, calls him over and says loudly 'he's not a mind reader'

"I'm just fixing him with a glare .......... Beam Me Up, Scotty "
Yes, I know Captain Kirk never actually said this ..

I wonder if I had been the same ethnicity would she have made the same remarks or would she have just been kinder. If that is a thought or concept that is so alien to you then you are obviously very lucky. 🙂

White privilege in action there from previous posters. They didn't even know what you were on about OP. 🙄 Re the toddler mum, there are arseholes everywhere these days, don't let her bad day ruin yours as well. You were being really patient and kind which she just probably wasn't used to being on the receiving end of. I find most people are intolerant of kids in supermarkets these days. Anyway you were kind and she really wasn't. Rise above and don't change.

SandyHappyPerson · 15/08/2026 18:35

I don't say anything or do anything as I'm not in a rush and he was just being a child - the mum sees me waiting, calls him over and says loudly 'he's not a mind reader'.

This is all about nuance, what did you do when she called him over? Did you smile or show no emotion whatsoever.. if you showed no emotion then she probably read that as annoyance and reacted accordingly.

I've got resting bitch face, so I make a point of smiling at people to show I don't hate them for existing.

shhblackbag · 15/08/2026 18:39

I'm amazed at what warrants a thread on here. Let it go.

The weird thing is… you go on to completely dismiss any possibility of racism at play

NewPinkJacket · 15/08/2026 18:40

"I was taken back and lost my chance to respond"

You fit in very well on Mumsnet then.

It seems almost everyone is 'taken aback, aghast, gobsmacked' etc to ever utter a word to whoever they've run here to complain about.

I really can't imagine how they manage to advocate for their children.

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 15/08/2026 18:40

Herenowatbroad · 15/08/2026 17:30

I know

who knew certain ethnicities may have mind reading skills and some may not

Why are you being deliberately obtuse? Would the person be as rude if the person was white? Who knows? We cannot answer that, but to mock like it’s absurd that people from different backgrounds don’t experience life differently to white people is ridiculous

Scrimblescromble · 15/08/2026 18:45

It sounds like a scenario where the parent was having a stressful trip to a shop with a toddler where whichever way you’d dealt with it you may have got a snappy and impatient response. If you’d said excuse it it might have been ‘he’s only little, you don’t need to rush him’

I get why you’re querying the ethnicity thing. There have been two or three standout points in recent years where I’ve maybe been a bit short with someone and have wondered to myself if I’d have spoken to another white person that way or whether it was unconscious bias at play. It’s uncomfortable to think but it’s important to do so.

NovemberMorn · 15/08/2026 18:48

I voted UABU for the simple fact I have no idea what ethnicity has to do with anything.

Lobelia123 · 15/08/2026 18:52

Snide comment and unnecessary. Dont let it bother you for a second longer.... you never know whats going on in peoples lives that they react poorly. (or maybe shes just a miserable sarcastic bint. In which case you should feel sorry for her!
