AIBU to expect my parents to manage one vegan barbecue meal?

veganbbqdrama · Today 17:14

Surely most people can survive if they have just one vegan meal ???!!!

My parents have decided they don’t think they can attend a bbq at my house due to the fact we are a vegan family and they are worried about ‘nutrition gaps’ !!!

Neither have any health conditions.

It’s one meal and we are offering a wide variety of things plus desserts. I said to then if they don’t fancy it that’s fine but they said it’s because they are worried about the food, and asked could they bring their own (no! ) or would I get them a few bits they can eat (non vegan) to which I said I can’t have it in the house.

Surely they could just come for a drink and eat later at home ? They are making such a fuss ?? It’s not like we are pushing veganism or the ethics behind our choice we weren’t planning on talking about it just having a nice family get together !

These are your parents. I have no doubt they accommodate your dietary requirements when you visit them - so just make an exception for once, and do something you think they would like. How difficult would it be to get a few bits and put them in the fridge? I’d ask what they would suggest, and just get it - they’re not asking you to touch it or eat it.

a meat eater accommodating a vegan is not at all the same as asking a vegan to buy, store, cook and serve meat. Everyone eats food that’s vegan (every vegetable, fruit, cereal etc is a vegan food item), but asking someone who is ethically opposed to eating animals to cook meat is not ok. For an ethical vegan (and I mean someone who lives their entire life by the principle of non-harm to animals) that would be the same as asking a kosher Jew to cook up some bacon just to be nice to their family.

Vegans can eat meat and dairy they just choose not to, so it is exactly analogous.
Thought many people like myself cant eat vegan food due to allergies

You are allergic to all vegan food? So you only ever eat meat, dairy and eggs? How unusual.

BIossomtoes · Today 18:02

Soontobe60 · Today 17:23

And the OP can eat meat, she just doesn’t want to.

And she doesn’t want meat or dairy products in her house. Which I completely understand - despite being a carnivore.

lol! I can’t bear Quorn either. If it’s not on the menu, I’ll come and your DPs can stay away!

Yeah I can’t eat Quorn either. Makes me ill and it is an UHPF so not at all healthy.

Vegans choose not to eat meat and dairy. OPs parents choose not to eat a vegan barbeque. Neither are wrong. We're all entitled to make our own choices on what we want to eat, and what events we want to attend. As long as OP's parents were polite about it, there's really no issue. It's OK to decline an invitation to an event you don't want to go to. I wouldn't want to go to a vegan BBQ, or a vegan restaurant for that matter. I'd just politely decline the invitation, and expect this would be accepted politely and with good grace.

OP’s parents will eat vegan food every day. It’s ridiculous.

I don't understand anyone's saying that a vegan BBQ sounds (insert negative adjective).BBQ is just the technique that results in the flavour.

I don't host BBQs but I take my own food to my parent's and BBQs a lot.

I do kebabs with seitan 'meatballs', vegan burgers, vegan sausages, corn on the cob done on the BBQ and obviously have the buns/breads and salads, dips etc. What's so awful about it? I can only think it is from people who are just all about the meat.

If I were you OP I would shift the BBQ an hour later so that they can eat beforehand. Make sides/small dishes you think they may like so that they can nibble if they want, and then they can come, it is obvious you really want them there.

I don't like a lot of certain cuisines but I would still go to an event if I wanted to see people and just eat beforehand or nibble on the bits I do like.

I will suggest that, I’m considering offering them an afternoon tea type spread as I know in the past they’ve eaten cucumber sandwiches, crisps and Victoria sponge and I can make a vegan cake that you just would never guess was vegan (or I can get the Oggs vegan mini Victoria sponges 😂😂)

Can't see the point of a vegan barbecue. Barbecue is mostly meat.

Veggies are lovely on the bbq.

Roaring111111 · Today 18:04

HumberSquid · Today 17:59

Well it could make someone quite ill for a start. Not everyone can tolerate a lot of veg and certainly not that quorn shite.

So, for example, I cant digest fake meat (you were talking about a substitute that people wouldnt notice right). But I dont go into details about all my disgusting gut problems if I think Im being offered something I can eat.

OP isn’t serving quorn and I doubt she’d serve any vegetables they couldn’t eat.

Ifeellikeateenageragain · Today 18:04

We do vegetable kebabs, vegan burgers (made with lentils, chickpeas, sweet potato, quinoa and whatever else dh adds 😂) grilled portobello mushrooms, there’s lots you can cook on a bbq and it all has a nice chargrilled taste.

Also the bbq salads - we do a 3 bean tofu and rice bbq one, then a lentil pasta and peppers , tomatoes and chilli. Fresh bread, houmous etc.

Desserts are fresh fruit and a vegan cheesecake or vegan ice creams.

I’ve tried to explain to them that it will be a balanced meal but they can’t comprehend !

Ah OP, now you've made me hungry!!!

BIossomtoes · Today 18:05

Minasama · Today 17:55

How old are your parents? Mine are over 80 and really only eat traditional food, I couldn’t imagine there is much that is vegan that they could eat.
Why not change the invite to afternoon tea/coffee?

They don’t eat fruit, vegetables, rice, pasta?

The parents first offered to bring their own food I’m sure they’d be happy to bring it already cooked to reheat themselves or cook it themselves and clean up after.

It is OP that has rejected two compromises.

TiggyTomCat · Today 18:06

As a meat eater I can honestly say that some of the most delicious food I've had has been in vegan restaurants. They are missing out and on the basis of lack of nutrition...plain daft - they would hardly starve.

YANBU. My neighbour is getting married next month and she and her DH to be are both vegans. The meal (that 46 people are going to be having) is going to be fully vegan - starter, main, and dessert, and around half a dozen people - all relatives over 55 - are whingeing and whining, and saying they're so annoyed about having to eat 'vegan shit' that they don't feel like going to the wedding.

The bride has said 'please your bloody self, but do let me know soon if you're not coming, so I can give someone else your place!'

And these people call Millennials and Gen Z 'snowflakes.' They need to take a look in the mirror!

Me and DH got married last year and had an
entirely vegan wedding. Anyone who didn’t want to eat a couple of very nice vegan meals was welcome to either pop out and get different food or just not come! There wasn’t a single person who didn’t come because of our menu choices. If anyone had actually been angry enough to make a fuss, knowing how important our vegan life is to us both, frankly the would have had their invite rescinded anyway.

aCatCalledFawkes · Today 18:06

Because omnivores, by definition, do eat everything that vegans and vegetarians do?

I don't agree with this because I go out of my way to make vegetarian food for family members that require it that I just wouldn't normally make if everyone was a meat eater. I think I have replaced meat burgers with something like large stuffed mushrooms (cheese garlic. pesto etc), grilled vegetarian sausages and other bits and pieces. I just wouldn't bother if everyone was a meat eater and I definitely wouldn't bother with vegetarian sausages but at Christmas I use them to make sausage rolls for my SIL and niece.

Livpool · Today 18:06

I hate mushrooms and pulses like beans and lentils don’t agree with me but I would just come and drink! Why can’t they do that? YANBU OP.

Samewrinklesnewname · Today 18:07

ScarlettSarah · Today 17:18

Very silly of them. Can't see why non-vegans can't eat the occasional vegan meal.

I can’t see why non carnivores can’t eat the occasional carnivorous meal😂

I say this tongue in cheek as I eat very little meat, but wouldn’t touch the plant based “fake meat” which a lot of vegans eat.

FluffMagnet · Today 18:07

Do they really dislike pulses? I am not very fussy with food, but really have an issue with beans and therefore find myself so hungry after a vegan meal because I end up with no protein. Also, if you actually eat real cheese, you realise how absolutely awful fake vegan "cheese" is. If you want them to come, figure out what they actually like and cater for them.

I wasnt talking about the OP (her menu sounds lovely though I could eat very little of it). I was addressing your "why its ok to lie to people about feeding them veggie/vegan burgers" post.

WatchingTheStarsFromMyHammock · Today 18:09

Absolutely ridiculous of your parents. I happily eat meat and don't wish to change that, but I quite often eat vegan meals quite by chance, because it's a nice sounding recipe I found in a cookbook for example.

I have vegan and vegetarian friends and I wouldn't dream of asking them to serve me meat.

dontmalbeconme · Today 18:09

Roaring111111 · Today 18:02

Her parents do eat vegetables so it’s not remotely the same.

It is not fraud of any kind to serve your parents a vegan burger instead of a meat burger.

Except a vegan burger would make me very sick as I'm allergic to both quorn and soy. I'd be utterly livid if you lied to me about what you were serving me and as a result I ended up with extremely painful stomach issues and sickness and needing to take up to a week off of work on sick pay as a result. Dick move. It's not "harmless", it would cause me a lot of pain and cost me a lot of money.

It's an appalling thing to do to lie about what is in the food you are serving another adult for any reason. Adults have the right to choose what they do and don't want to eat, noone has the right to trick them into eating something they don't want to eat, for any reason.

DoubleShotEspresso · Today 18:10

How would you feel if they suggested “just one meat bbq” I?

It is food fraud. Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t tell someone this a burger made from meat when it is really made from beets or whatever. You can’t even say here is a beef burger when it’s made from horse meat- as Tesco’s found out some years ago.

OP’s parents will eat vegan food every day. It’s ridiculous.

But they are choosing to decline this invitation, which is their right. No one has the right to force them to attend an event they don't want to go to, nor consume food they don't want to eat. It's that simple.
