AIBU to expect my parents to manage one vegan barbecue meal?

veganbbqdrama · Today 17:14

Surely most people can survive if they have just one vegan meal ???!!!

My parents have decided they don’t think they can attend a bbq at my house due to the fact we are a vegan family and they are worried about ‘nutrition gaps’ !!!

Neither have any health conditions.

It’s one meal and we are offering a wide variety of things plus desserts. I said to then if they don’t fancy it that’s fine but they said it’s because they are worried about the food, and asked could they bring their own (no! ) or would I get them a few bits they can eat (non vegan) to which I said I can’t have it in the house.

Surely they could just come for a drink and eat later at home ? They are making such a fuss ?? It’s not like we are pushing veganism or the ethics behind our choice we weren’t planning on talking about it just having a nice family get together !

Their loss op.

@Hoardasurass Veganisum is the worst possible diet out there for both people and the environment.

And your evidence for that statement is ?

Delphiniumandlupins · Today 17:46

I think if your parents were not aware it was a vegan bbq they would probably be perfectly happy with the food you plan to serve. Any way you could take them a couple of burgers to try in advance? If they are fixed that they need to consume meat at 6pm every day there's not much you can do.

Suntherebutnotthere · Today 17:46

They are just telling you they don't like your food. It is that simple.

I will be honest, none of that would excite me on bbq. Sounds perfectly fine, just nothing ooooh for me. They probably feel the same or even more

PurpleThistle7 · Today 17:46

(As an aside we recently experimented with bbq sweet potato drizzled with tahini and it was delicious)

AgnesMcDoo · Today 17:46

They are being very silly. It’s one meal.

Muppets.

A vegan barbecue? What a turgid, bleak prospect that sounds like. Are open toed sandals and Meat is Murder badges optional?

Timble · Today 17:46

People get weird about vegan food but forget they already eat many foods that are suitable for vegans such as ‘bread, fruit, chips, beans etc’. When I do a bbq we do the nicest food, we grill pineapple with brown sugar, lots of very interesting salads, we do either a bean patty or a fake meat burger/sausages/koftas. Unless your family calculate the nutrients of every meal I’d assume they are just being awkward.

I mostly think that your DPs are being absurd, mainly because I love a good veggie kebab. However, even though I eat a lot of vegetarian food, a tiny bit of me has a heart sink moment when the only options are vegan. I’m happy with veg and pulses, but Quorn, tofu and UPF alternatives, can do one.

Yes I'm the same, I saw some vegan honey on sale the other day and the length of the list of ingredients from here, there and everywhere was ridiculous. I do think they could manage one meal though.

RidiculousDog · Today 17:47

I don't mind eating vegan, there are some delicious vegan dishes. I have to say a vegan BBQ as you describe it would not be something I attended for the delight of the food, but obviously I would eat it. I wonder if the issue is when we say "BBQ" it conjures up a particular meat fest image, and those of us who like meat go "mmmm", so when we are told it is a vegan BBQ, it feels a bit sad. Whereas if it was "come round mine I am doing a vegan buffet" there aren't any expectations so you think, fine.

Elieza · Today 17:47

as they are set in their ways and afraid to try anything new, why dont you make the bbq an hour later and they can have their half a dead sheep prior to coming round to yours where they can have a try of some vegan fare without having to fill up being already fed, and then pudding and tea/coffee?

that should satisfy their hunger and malnutrition concerns. i imagine however that youll heat a lot of “oh that looks lovely dear but i dont want to try a fruit skewer than you”. “no no dear you go ahead and have the vegan ice cream, your father and i wouldnt like it”…

Wow I’m surprised you were able to construct a message when you are so closed minded.

Well, I disagree, and thankfully I don't know anyone IRL who would pull such a stupid stunt to try and prove a point Hmm

Why is it stupid though? Cl’s parents do eat vegetables. What difference does it make?

StuntNun · Today 17:48

I’m not sure about this one. Clearly your parents can manage one vegan meal, even if they don’t want to. But, if it was the other way around and they invited you to a barbecue at their house, wouldn’t you expect them to have vegan options for you? Why are omnivores expected to provide vegetarian or vegan options but not the other way round?

I assume that, as a vegan, the OP wouldn't want meat or dairy products in her house, nor would she want to buy them. It isn't comparable to her parents catering for her family as vegans - her parents can eat vegan food, they just don't want to.

Vegans can eat meat and dairy they just choose not to, so it is exactly analogous.
Thought many people like myself cant eat vegan food due to allergies

AnonyMumAuDHD · Today 17:48

veganbbqdrama · Today 17:21

We do vegetable kebabs, vegan burgers (made with lentils, chickpeas, sweet potato, quinoa and whatever else dh adds 😂) grilled portobello mushrooms, there’s lots you can cook on a bbq and it all has a nice chargrilled taste.

Also the bbq salads - we do a 3 bean tofu and rice bbq one, then a lentil pasta and peppers , tomatoes and chilli. Fresh bread, houmous etc.

Desserts are fresh fruit and a vegan cheesecake or vegan ice creams.

I’ve tried to explain to them that it will be a balanced meal but they can’t comprehend !

As lovely as that sounds I’d have to give it a swerve too - allergic to quinoa so would end up in an ambulance just from cross contamination.

But if they’ve no allergies, they should be fine. Not every meal requires meat based protein. In fact, it would be unhealthy if that was how they structure their meals.

Girlintheframe · Today 17:49

They sound like hard work tbh

No need to be snippy.

Obviously you haven't had any varied vegan food.

I am a 'fussy eater' (or maybe have ARFID?) but I would eat something at home before I came so I could chat and drink with you. Assuming there was a drink I liked...

But out of your list I MAY have the mushroom (unless it had a sauce on it), MAY have the bread (unless it had tomato or fruit in or on it) and would try the ice cream (unless it had fruit in it).

Just as an example.

I am vegetarian, but my parents weren't- in similar circumstances I would have agreed they bring their own food, but not to be cooked on your barbecue. They would not have eaten lentils etc.
I would rather they came carrying their own ham sandwiches than stayed away.

My SIL is vegetarian, we are not but have always cooked her food on foil trays on the BBQ when she comes here and made a real effort to make sure that there is food she likes so I do think it works both ways.
OP could they bring cooked food for themselves and take it straight in to the garden, heat up on a foil tray? Rather than bring it in the house.

I've already answered that several times....

But, grown adults don't lie to other adults about the food they're being served. Whether they're able to eat it or not is irrelevant. It's just a dick thing to do to someone.

To be honest, none of that would appeal to me.
Wat happens when you go to someone else's house? Do they always accommodate you?

Why cant they just bring some food for themselves?

Because vegans don’t eat meat but meat eaters do eat vegetables.

People who can’t go one meal without eating meat are so odd
