AIBU to expect my parents to manage one vegan barbecue meal?

Surely most people can survive if they have just one vegan meal ???!!!

My parents have decided they don’t think they can attend a bbq at my house due to the fact we are a vegan family and they are worried about ‘nutrition gaps’ !!!

Neither have any health conditions.

It’s one meal and we are offering a wide variety of things plus desserts. I said to then if they don’t fancy it that’s fine but they said it’s because they are worried about the food, and asked could they bring their own (no! ) or would I get them a few bits they can eat (non vegan) to which I said I can’t have it in the house.

Surely they could just come for a drink and eat later at home ? They are making such a fuss ?? It’s not like we are pushing veganism or the ethics behind our choice we weren’t planning on talking about it just having a nice family get together !

Id Just tell them you've reconsidered.

Then feed them This Isnr Sausages and Beyond Burgers whilst they tell you how meaty and delicious they are...

Do you eat meat at their house?
Then why should the eat vegan at yours?

Well everyone eats vegan food
The Op has chosen not ro eat meat or dairy products as is her right
As a meat eater i respect everyones choices
If i was invited to a vegan Bar B Que i would happily eat what was on offer
Meat eaters eat vegetables and non dairy products as well as meat
Vegans choose not too.

I always make a huge effort for my vegan friends . They never return the favour. I actually think its a bit rude of them. They are not going to combust if they buy a lump of cheese or boil an egg. I get that meat might be a step too far.
I couldn't eat most of what you are offering. Crohns means that would make me very ill.

Ilikealltings · Today 21:15

I don't think this is about one meal.

fruitable · Today 21:17

I’ll come for a BBQ, OP! Sounds delicious!
(Your DPs ABVU - they’ll survive and will probably enjoy - one vegan meal)

Well I would have cheese on my jacket potato and beans, might also have an egg on top of avocado on toast, soup I would have cheese or mix through yogurt. I just wouldn't make the others.

I think it’s probably very unusual for anyone to have an animal product in every single meal, and I say that as a meat eater.

Deleted as I meant to quote a previous message

Can anyone actually justify:

Why politely declining an invitation to an event you don't want to go to isn't OK

and

Why choosing not to eat food you don't really want to eat isn't OK?

We do vegetable kebabs, vegan burgers (made with lentils, chickpeas, sweet potato, quinoa and whatever else dh adds 😂) grilled portobello mushrooms, there’s lots you can cook on a bbq and it all has a nice chargrilled taste.

Also the bbq salads - we do a 3 bean tofu and rice bbq one, then a lentil pasta and peppers , tomatoes and chilli. Fresh bread, houmous etc.

Desserts are fresh fruit and a vegan cheesecake or vegan ice creams.

I’ve tried to explain to them that it will be a balanced meal but they can’t comprehend !

Sounds lovely. I’m not vegan and I’d love that! They’re making a fuss over nothing!

To be fair I am sure the op could eat meat, I’ve never heard of anyone with a meat allergy so I assume it’s fairly rare. So I assume she just doesn’t want to.

Meat allergy is becoming increasingly common due to a tick-borne disease in the US that causes it. There are definitely cases here in the UK.

Yes - and I'd make those dishes with butter, cream etc as well as cheese.

I doubt it actually - think about it

  • do you put butter or spread on your toast?
  • a lot of shop bought bread contains milk and actually milk is in a lot of things
  • hidden things like stock

I'm racking my brains trying to think of a meal I have that doesn't have an animal product in it!

That sounds vile. Why can't they bring something with them to eat?

It sounds delicious. OP doesn’t want animal products in her house. Her house, her rules.

So not going to lie if I don’t eat animal protein at a meal I feel awful (btw I did try to go vegan and felt horrific and had to stop, even with pea protein powders etc) but in these circumstances I would just make sure I’d had something that would stop that hunger kicking in before I came to you

You really never have a meal without animal protein? Beans on toast, for example?

So every day OP’s parents only have meat and dairy? I’m willing to bet that every single day they have one of vegetables, cereal, fruit, bread, coffee, tea, herbs, nuts etc.

And is OP serving cereal at this BBQ? No

Is a bowl of fruit going to fill them up for the evening if they were to have it at a BBQ? Unlikely

Are herbs or nuts an entire meal now?

Unless they drink black tea or black coffee the milk they put in it will stop it being vegan. It’s also not a meal.

As a meat eater my daily meals include things like chicken, salmon, steak, eggs, tuna, beef mince, or cheese. Often served with salad, veg, pasta or rice etc. I don’t usually opt for meals containing only vegetables, because they’re usually not tasty enough for me. I can if they have cheese included (mushrooms filled with cheese, vegetable cannelloni etc), but purely vegetables isn’t something I’d often eat. And many other meat eaters will be similar.

The simple fact is, OP is entitled to cook only vegan food in her own home and OP’s parents don’t have to go and eat a vegan only meal if they do not wish to.

Haven't you seen the news about all the people who've been dropping down dead after attending vegan barbecues? Doctors are calling it "accelerated starvation". Apparently just one vegan barbecue can have the same negative effect on the human digestive system as going without food altogether for an entire month!

High protein diet here. I probably have some sort of animal product in every meal.
My day starts with a cup of tea and milk, breakfast has eggs or frozen berries and yogurt. Lunch always has some sort of cheese etc

Butter on your potato, cream in your tomato soup, cheese on top of your bubble and squeak, chips are fried in the same frier as the fish so also not vegan…

Probably a lot more healthy that what they normally eat!

Gowlett · Today 21:28

Can they not just munch some falafel, hummus, salad, veggies, bread, olives, desserts & myriad other delicious foods?

I had some roast beef in someone’s house yesterday. Nicely cooked & lovely gravy etc but it was like chewing shoe leather for me.

Wouldn’t be something I’d ever eat, but I still had it. Everyone else enjoyed it. Your parents could just give it a try anyway…

Lots of chip shop chips these days are vegan.

Those are all pleasant extras but not usually something someone would add every time.
