AIBU to expect my parents to manage one vegan barbecue meal?

veganbbqdrama · Today 17:14

Surely most people can survive if they have just one vegan meal ???!!!

My parents have decided they don’t think they can attend a bbq at my house due to the fact we are a vegan family and they are worried about ‘nutrition gaps’ !!!

Neither have any health conditions.

It’s one meal and we are offering a wide variety of things plus desserts. I said to then if they don’t fancy it that’s fine but they said it’s because they are worried about the food, and asked could they bring their own (no! ) or would I get them a few bits they can eat (non vegan) to which I said I can’t have it in the house.

Surely they could just come for a drink and eat later at home ? They are making such a fuss ?? It’s not like we are pushing veganism or the ethics behind our choice we weren’t planning on talking about it just having a nice family get together !

I find it so interesting. I've come across far more meat eaters who are absolute twats about veganism than preachy, selfrighteous vegans. Personally, I think people who go to the hassle of completely avoiding anything that causes suffering to animal are better than the rest of us 😆

Putting £10 on you being a vegan.

hotmumshit · Today 20:01

I'm not a fan of the menu tbh

I think it sounds very vegan

If you were doing quorn sausages and burgers, it might not be so bad

I think you need to offer chips, pasta etc if you wont do meat, imo

@caringcarer

you don’t like vegetables?!

Only carrots and peas. Hard to BBQ those. I don't like salad either but I offer it to guest who do like it.

UniquePinkSwan · Today 20:03

ScarlettSarah · Today 17:18

Very silly of them. Can't see why non-vegans can't eat the occasional vegan meal.

I’m carnivore. I couldn’t eat it the same way vegans couldn’t eat meat. I would get stomach ache

You did well to read on after the "nock on effects"

Do you actually have any response to my post other than snide comments about my dyslexia?
Somehow I doubt that you do as the type of person who snears at people for their disabilities instead of responding to the valid points and arguments are the type who have no arguments

AImportantMermaid · Today 20:05

And why should your parent, or anyone else for that matter, have to ‘manage’ a meal? ‘Here you go mum. Here’s barbecued portobello mushroom. It has the texture of chargrilled snakeskin on the outside and a wet sponge in the inside’. They don’t like the idea of your food. Let them be.

LancashireButterPie · Today 20:07

We have vegans, lifelong OAP vegetarians and meat eaters in our family. Honestly OP , I think it's a little inconsiderate of you not to let them bring their own food.
I personally can't stand Tofu , chemical butter replacement spreads and vegan meat replacements. A lot of it is ultra processed and I try to avoid that. I wouldn't serve my guests food they didn't like or objected to, whatever their dietary preferences.
Maybe BBQ'd bananas with chocolate sauce (lots of lovely high quality vegan choc around!) might tempt them?

sausageth · Today 19:58

Sorry but I don't understand this at all. You are inviting people to a BBQ. Therefore, you consider what the people coming would like to eat. If you are insisting on it being vegan because of YOUR choices, then to me that is selfish. It's even more selfish to not let them bring their own food.

We have a similar issue with my sister and brother in law, who refuse to come to family meals if they're booked at non vegan restaurants. So anytime we have a family event, we have to eat vegan food, which we HATE. Yes our choice, but why does it always have to be up to them? Why do they not allow people to eat what they want to eat? Whether at restaurants or bringing their own food?

Edited

I disagree - if your are going to a BBQ at someone who is practicing muslim, you accept there will be no pork and that the beef will be halal. Or you decline, which I suppose is what OP’s parent’s have done. Frankly I’d take their decline with a smile and carry on without them. Their loss.

PeloMom · Today 20:08

Why you wouldn’t allow them to bring their own food ?

maxslice · Today 20:08

They are being unreasonable, but so are you. They should graciously be able to handle the occasional vegan meal. You should be able to graciously handle them bringing their own (cooked) food to enjoy your company. It won’t taint your house somehow. I guess it comes down to, how important is it to you that they come? How important is it to them to spend time with you?

BlueFahrenheit · Today 20:09

I never attend vegan BBQs.

Oooh I dunno! We had some glorious chargrilled pea pods at Riverside organic!

LucyMay33 · Today 20:09

If i have a bbq and have guests that are vegetarian/ vegan I would accommodate them so wouldn’t it work the other way? Not everybody is vegan so does it not harm you to let them bring something for themselves if you don’t want to accommodate them?

Hatty65 · Today 20:10

I imagine they think it will be boring (taste wise) rather than believing they will miss out on vital nutrients at one meal.

I quite like the odd vegetarian meal - but vegetable skewers sound dull, as does much of your menu. Grilled mushrooms aren't terribly exciting and I'm not able to eat beans.

caringcarer · Today 20:10

RebuildInProgress · Today 19:28

Do they do a vegan option for your family when you visit? Seems inflexible and petty not to make the effort of buying some meat options to suit your parents' tastes. Especially at a bbq! Why would you turn a sociable occasion into a statement about your food preferences? Many people would feel hurt if they try to accomodate your vegan diet at their events, only for you not to return the courtesy or at least let them bring their own bits to grill.

Especially as they could use a disposable BBQ and it gets binned after use. No need to contaminate OP's BBQ.

So it is not actually the case that you can't eat "vegan food" due to allergies. You just can't eat food which contains the foods that you are actually allergic to.

Which is most vegan meals and every type of vegan burger I've come across and the poster I was initially responding to wanted to lie and give people vegan burgers claiming that they are meat and couldn't understand why thats wrong and food fraud

Steeleydan · Today 20:11

We do vegetable kebabs, vegan burgers (made with lentils, chickpeas, sweet potato, quinoa and whatever else dh adds 😂) grilled portobello mushrooms, there’s lots you can cook on a bbq and it all has a nice chargrilled taste.

Also the bbq salads - we do a 3 bean tofu and rice bbq one, then a lentil pasta and peppers , tomatoes and chilli. Fresh bread, houmous etc.

Desserts are fresh fruit and a vegan cheesecake or vegan ice creams.

I’ve tried to explain to them that it will be a balanced meal but they can’t comprehend !

Iam not a vegetarian or vegan, but if someone invited me and it was put infront on me I'd eat it.
Iam not against veganism, iam totally ignorant as what to eat! I'd love it.
Just don't invite them, ungrateful rude arseholes

Longsight2019 · Today 20:12

OP, without wanting to upset, they are offering you an insight into what they really think about your veganism.

For them to be unwilling to see it for what it is which I would say is purely a nutritious home-cooked meal only without animal products, is beyond small minded

Not worth wrecking a relationship over but one for you to ponder as this progresses

Because they will bring meat

Whatadilema · Today 20:14

I have to say i can never understand this mindset and it’s so common. Surely everyone can eat vegan food, allergies notwithstanding. No-one absolutely has to have meat, fish,
or dairy in every meal. The mind boggles. I’m not vegan myself but family members are and i’m always happy to both cook and eat vegan food made by others. If they are that desperate for meat they can grab a big mac on the way home.

It's one meal. What sort of absolute snowflake can't eat vegan for one meal.

It's pathetic.

Same type of snowflakes who won't eat some sort of food containing an animal for one meal Hmm.

Gosh! I wasn't aware that so many people had allergies. I'm assuming these are actual allergies, and not a handy excuse for yet another MN vegan-bash?

Mines are and have left me in hospital before, I have to carry an epi pen at all times.
Half of my family are celiacs, the reason that all food even in restaurants must display allergens is because people were dieing form undeclared allergens.

I did say to them there’s no pressure to eat just come and have a drink instead ? But they keep saying it’s over a mealtime so they need something (they are very set on their mealtimes)

To be honest I don’t see how some hummus and pita and a bit of rice salad is going to kill them
