Next week it’s going to forecast rain and cooler weather. Yay! Dreading the next few days beforehand

No one should moan about it raining until the grass has turned green.

It’s not going to rain here in Suffolk. I’ve never complained about rain since 1976. I appreciate that some people get awful flooding, to which my only response can be that it’s a question of time and context. And future years will only be dryer and dryer, here. It’s truly frightening.

I think that people will look back at the C20 as a golden age, before the tipping points. Water will not be freely available on tap in the near future. I’ve been sure of that for some time. And, really, here in the countryside it wasn’t available freely not so long ago. You only have to look at old paintings to see the large carboys filled with water. If you’ve read Flora Thompson’s Lark Rise to Candleford you’ll remember how they had to walk to a water source and carry it back. We’ve taken so much for granted, not realising how unusual our conveniences were, in the greater history.

Everything about the climate disaster that was predicted 30-40 years ago is happening now in real time.

Crap for the farmers? It’s a food security crisis that will affect everyone.

UK faces ‘worst food security crisis in decades’ due to repeated heatwaves

Well there's a food crisis when it rains too much as well So whatever the weather it seems we can't win. It will rain, it's not going to stay dry forever more. If this is going to be the new normal which I don't believe we're going to have to learn to live with it.

Dragonfly97 · 12/08/2026 13:43

I'll be happy to see it, if it actually happens!

RolledDahl · 12/08/2026 13:44

I cannot WAIT for the rain.

I like a warm, sunny day as much as anyone, but I do find this idea of the only 'proper summer' being a baking hot one baffling - apparently, a large amount of people seem think that the only 'nice' weather is endless blazing hot days with cloudless blue skies. This is always reinforced by the weather reports on TV , as if there is no other weather that can be categorised as 'nice' or be enjoyed! And the presenters lamenting rain...you know, the stuff we rely on to continue living, and fill reservoirs, keep trees and vegetation and animals and insects alive? Completely mad.

I really don't understand how people can take pleasure in this weather, seeing the grass turn into dry hay and the soil into dust and the leaves dropping off the trees. Just the weather being hot is not enough - don't all of you who love the weather notice how barren, awful and dead everything looks?

I'd really love it if people could embrace all different types of weather in this country and not just be fixated on 'hot and dry' . Cloudy days, windy days, frosty, cold, pouring down, drizzle, stormy; all of these have their own charm...I actually think this weather is completely boring 🤷🏻‍♀️

Agree, there are some really thick people on MN banging on about how wonderful it all is. They really are ignorant if they think this year is a one off for extreme heat.
We can't always 'just import foods' because other countries are in the same position as us. and will need more for their own people. Food prices will go up on many things, people will be complaining they can't buy xyz - really? There was no rain to help grow the bloody stuff. But we have the heat to who cares if there is a shortage on certain foods come winter? If the same happens next year and the crops fail again through lack of rain we could really be in the shit.
I was talking with someone the other day who said if the crops fail and there is a bread shortage she would go over to eating muffins or cereals like Weetabix. What a total fuckwit. When I pointed out about wheat might not be sp plentiful so less bakery and cereal products available she looked at me as if I was the stupid one. "Well, Tesco will always have bread and what I need to buy" was the response. You can'r argue with idiots.
Okay love, keep your ignorant head up your ignorant arse.

Yes, but the same can be said about the people who, in autumn and winter, keep saying how much they are enjoying prolonged periods of heavy rain.
Global warming is not just prolonged periods of hot, dry weather.
Having a lot of rain and storms is also a sign of global warming. And yet whenever there is a thread with people being fed up with constant rain, there will be posters saying how great the rainy weather is. Last winter there were floods, farmers were struggling and there were predictions of food shortages due to this, but people were still banging on how much they enjoyed the ‘cosy’ weather.
There were shortages of some produce, which is normally imported from warmer countries due to the fact that they were having shitty weather themselves, but it was ok as long as people could “snuggle under a blanket with a hot choccy”

BigBlueFrog · 12/08/2026 13:59

YABU. We had six bloody months of rain before mid May. I won’t be complaining if this ‘heatwave’ (which is not actually that hot) continues to roll on for another month or more at least! Nor will I be sad if this is the new norm for UK Summers, though I doubt it will be. (Not denying climate change is a thing before I get jumped on, it obviously is and Summers are gradually getting hotter overall but it’s not linear).

Limeandfigs · 12/08/2026 09:40

I'm sure you'll be moaning about the huge increase in the price of bread in a couple of months time when the failed harvests start to bite. We're on course for one of the worst on record.

I've said this to everyone and I'll say it on here: if you have the ability to bake your own bread, start stocking up on bread flour now because prices are about to go through the roof.

No, I won't. I don't really eat much bread and can do without it easily.
I did say that I understand why we need the rain, but I've also explained that I'm enjoying the current weather.
As far as I know, I'm allowed to have an opinion 🤔

Soubriquet · 12/08/2026 14:02

We need some bloody good rain. The poor farmers are on their knees trying to keep their crops alive, and the animals all need it too.

EmmaB1309 · 12/08/2026 14:13

MyPantsAreFartCentral · 12/08/2026 08:58

I'm in Brum and desperate for rain. I'm visiting my friend next week in Glasgow and really hope it rains 😂

Hey! I’m near Glasgow. Don’t wish rain on us! Scotland gets more than its share of as it is.
Im kidding obvs. We are having a warm spell right now and July was amazing, but even then it didn’t get above about 26 c which is plenty hot enough for me. I can’t imagine what it must be like for those down south having temps ten degrees higher than that!

ItsPickleRick · 12/08/2026 14:31

I own horses and there have been several wildfires uncomfortably close by over the last week. I dread to think of all of the wildlife that has suffered.

I am praying for rain.

GreenShady · 12/08/2026 14:33

I’m never going to complain about cloudy rainy weather ever again (probably)

Heatwave not “actually“ that hot? It’s likely to be the hottest July on record!

There is no credible climate scientist who doesn’t think that summers are getting hotter and dryer. It’s not linear, no, in the sense that it’s not incremental. I know we don’t like experts, but given that what is happening now was predicted but disbelieved, it might be worth paying attention to those with “actual” expertise. By 2050, there will be between 40 million and 8 billion deaths as a result of climate change. In the UK, the predictions for 2050 are peaks of:

  • 45°C in England
  • 41°C in Wales
  • 38°C in Scotland
  • 30°C in Northern Ireland

There are serious implications for food and water security, fire and biodiversity depletion. Currently farmers are for example selling lambs early and at a loss, because they can’t feed them. Staple crops are not giving the yields that are needed and therefore are making a loss for the farmers. Fruit, veg and other crops are smaller- bear in mind that it will not be possible to grow traditional crops such as apples in these extreme temperatures. Trees get stressed repeatedly and cannot thrive.

It’s not just a question of a nice glass of chilled Chardonnay on a warm summer evening.

Oh settle down and stop being so patronising. I grew up in a country where it was regularly over 40 degrees in the Summer back in the 70s and 80s so no, I don’t think that what is termed a ‘heatwave’ here in the UK is actually that hot and I personally enjoy mid thirties temps. Each to their own. As I said, not denying climate change and yes the UK will have to adapt in terms of crops etc in the future and yes, other countries will suffer excess deaths due to climate change, that is a fact. I also feel very sorry for the animals and wildlife that are suffering. There is not a lot we (on an individual level) can do about it now though, and I’m entitled to say I love the hot weather and dislike the constant rain that we are subjected to for most of the year here.

AndyKitten · 12/08/2026 15:47

Well, I grew up on Mars and I can assure that what passes for heatwave here is the equivalent of deep freeze there.

Hmm
muddyford · 12/08/2026 15:56

In this area we had over six months of sodding rain before the dry weather started. Once it starts it doesn't know when to stop.

imonlyherecosimbored · 12/08/2026 16:05

This is not normal heat, it's oppressive and the humidity is off the scale.
Everywhere is dry and dying.
I like a sunny day as much as the next person but I'm on SSRI's so I'm sweating so much every day it's embarrassing and my son is epileptic and heat is a trigger for him so there's the constant worry about that.
Give me crisp frosty Winter mornings any day.

Dandelionsandseapinks · 12/08/2026 16:13

Only 20% coverage of rainfall in my area for 1 day. Beaming sunshine the rest. Appreciate the day of rain for my garden and the farmers though. Crops been on fire

I apologise if I was being patronising but as you’re replying in kind, it is obviously an approach that is acceptable to you. I will not “settle down”, whatever that is meant to entail because it’s a serious issue. Disinformation and denial is harmful because it hinders action.

Your background is irrelevant, as is the fact that it’s hotter elsewhere than in the UK . The Arctic is heating up 4 times more quickly than elsewhere. Are you saying “so what? It’s warmer at the equator?” It is a heatwave in the UK and you were saying that “actually” it isn’t. “Actually” it is.

And of course you’re entitled to say what you want QED.

TheChosenTwo · 12/08/2026 16:17

Well I won’t moan out loud but I won’t be happy about it.
We do need some rain, crops are suffering and that impacts absolutely everything.
It’s August, it should be dry and sunny.
i love the sun and the heat. We had about 6 months (more?) of pretty much relentless rain here prior to this lovely warm spell, it was dire.

I have no idea where you live OP but there’s sfa of any forecast for rain here (southwest) other than drizzle 12% next Tuesday afternoon 🤷🏼‍♀️

RayneDance · 12/08/2026 16:46

Quite a few fires have broken out around our way it's so worrying.

If there was zero fire risk I would just be able to cope but in dense housing with people having BBQ left right and center etc work sparks going on ,I'm praying for Rain.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/08/2026 17:33

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned but Burnham is on about banning portable BBQs. It’ll be the first thing Labour have done that I’d be supportive of. They should be banned permanently. Along with helium balloons in foil cases. When they hit power lines the sparks can cause a field fire.

Mollymaid64 · 12/08/2026 17:35

I'm going to moan. I'm going on holiday. Been hot for weeks, but of course the week I choose to go away it's forecast rain

FFSItsTooHot · 12/08/2026 17:40

Totally agree. But there will be the usual moaners, saying 'its always raining' when we haven't had any for nigh on 2 months! And saying that the hosepipe ban shouldn't apply any more because the drought must be over because of a couple of days of rain.
