Next week it’s going to forecast rain and cooler weather. Yay! Dreading the next few days beforehand

No one should moan about it raining until the grass has turned green.

I live just outside London and this summer has nearly finished me off.

If there’s one good thing to come out of it is (hopefully) more scrutiny of the egregiously criminal behaviour of the water companies. From the multi million pound salaries and bonuses of the shameless Thames Water bosses, to the ex Southern Water boss being charged with manipulating the results of water quality tests it’s just a decades long saga of utter contempt for the environment and the people who pay bills.

I’m no anarchist but I know who I’d put first against the wall when the revolution comes!

Too late, Thatcher's already dead.

AprilMizzel · 12/08/2026 10:56

No rain foracst here - most we get is slightly lower temps and possibly some clouds.

Fortnights time I'd be moaning if it rained as we are going to an open air location all day - which while better if overcast and light showers would be okay - actual rain would be unpleasant.

We must be in a good council area - they were around cleaning out the drains earlier this week. I was very impressed.

Sadly many councils don’t understand that prevention is cheaper than fixing.

I am not thick. I have 2 degrees, a highly challenging career, I read a huge amount. I understand the ramifications of climate change and am concerned about the consequences. That doesn’t mean I am holed up at home crying and ranting into the sky at the state of the world. I am enjoying the summer, I enjoy the heat, most of all I’m enjoying the stability to plan things and not have the weather scupper my plans.

That does not mean I don’t ever give thought to the wider ramifications, or what it means for us in the long term. But if you were as intelligent as you seem to think you are, you’d know humans are nuanced, that we can believe and feel multiple things at the same time, that we can still make the most of situations. We would lead small and pointless lives if we felt we needed to act and be a certain way all the time to give off ‘intelligence’.

Having 2 degrees doesn't mean anyone has common sense though. Because so many on here with education still speak drival and are ignorant.
No, I for one am not at home 'crying and ranting about the state of the world'. But I am concerned with the shit show my adult kids and gc are going to be living with long term.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/08/2026 11:01

North wilts has one day of rain forecast between now and 25th.
Rain was forecast for last week, but the timings kept getting pushed back and it never happened in the end.

I don’t think it’s ever going to rain again 😁 and apart from the fact that farmers we desperately need rain I love the hot dry weather.

You get my point. I am not thick. Nor am I lacking in common sense. I am concerned also, but I am also making the most of the sunshine while we have it. Calling people thick for doing things differently isn’t acceptable, ironically it shows a lack of critical thinking.

Plus whether you enjoy the heat or not isn't actually going to make any difference as to whether it rains 😆

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 12/08/2026 09:06

Oh, it will 😀. And here in Scotland we’ll moan about the rain as much as we like, thanks. We haven’t had a heatwave. “Everywhere” isn’t just the south of England.

Solidarity. I'm in NE England, no real heat waves and plenty of rain all summer here. I'm sick of people moaning about the heat while I'm sitting here freezing.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 12/08/2026 11:17

Random question- from the south west where we are in drought- is it worth spiking the lawn now for when it rains? Will it help it soak in?
maybe those funny aireating (sp?) shoes?

They do understand that because they're not morons but my council like many other English local authorities has to spend 80% of its budget on social care provision for adults and children

there's no money to do it

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 12/08/2026 11:25

Sorry but I'm going to complain when it rains and I love this weather. Yes it's crap for the farmers and I know some people don't enjoy this weather but let's face it it was crappy weather until the end of May and it will probably be crappy around September/October. It's summer, it's supposed to be nice weather. If people are allowed to moan when it's hot and sunny, I'm going to moan when it's cold and wet.

But living in Scotland and NE you'd expect colder often wetter weather - I did when I live in northern cities.

Actually moving to S wales did think great less harsh winters and price was a lot more rain - more than I was expect at first as had some super unusally wet winters.

I wasn't expecting all the last few years heat waves. It's to a point we are seriously thinking about heading back north when we look round for jobs.

Neverstopwondering · 12/08/2026 11:39

I reserve my rights as a British citizen to be able to moan about the rain once we get to have two days straight of rain.

Doing things differently isn't always a good thing though, it depends on what they are doing. That is not lack of critical thinking it is sometimes lack of common sense.
I knew someone, who was educated, NT for what it's worth, who used to get sunburnt over summer then complain because it was painful. But hey ho 'at least I've got a colour Finest you are so pale.' That was being stupid and ignorant on her part. She now has skin cancer and I don't. Whilst I wouldn't wish that on anyone as a Marie Curie nurse, I did warn her several times but she always knew better.

PDAalltheway · 12/08/2026 11:45

Only 30% probability of rain on 1 day here. I've started collecting washing up / handfasting water to put on the garden, we're so desperate.

Secretseverywhere · 12/08/2026 11:46

When it rained in Scotland last week, it was warm! I wasn’t dancing in it but I did carry on the dog walk it was pretty refreshing.

Crap for the farmers? It’s a food security crisis that will affect everyone.

What on earth has that got to do with anything I have said. I have merely called out being called thick for still enjoying the weather while understanding it is a symptom of an issue I am concerned about, it doesnt need to get deeper than that. It was an unnecessary comment and there is no defence for it.

It's my birthday on Wednesday 19th and I can advise that it usually does rain on my birthday and that's a pattern over 62 years. Regardless of how hot or not the summers have been, the good weather has always been liable to break around this time. My lovely dad always commented on it. live in the new forest where we have the big fire and are all desperate for rain, but we need at least 2 weeks where it rains every day to get everything green again and bring the fire risk right down.

Happy advance birthday, same day as my mum who will be 88, dear lord! 🤣🍾🎂

We’re having a farewell bbq on the 22nd before we move. Guarantee it’ll be pissing down! We’re moving very rurally, but up a hill so hopefully won’t have flooding of any kind.

I’m selfishly grateful I no longer have the horse, I can’t imagine the price of hay/feed/straw and how farmers are coping. Extreme heat=distressed plants/crap harvest. Farmers suffer and we suffer. As a pp mentioned, we can’t even import as everywhere in Europe is experiencing the heatwave. 🙁

It's normally only a degree or two cooler here than London. This year it's been consistently 10-15 degrees cooler and much wetter. It's unusually different so is not to be expected.

AprilMizzel · 12/08/2026 12:46

Met office data seems to have NE England as still being dryer and warmer than usual years patterns - less so than rest of country but more so than the norm for whole region.

So I don't know if this is a perception issue or a very local varriation - as micro climates can have big effects or the met office data for this year I've found is just wrong.

clearlyy · 12/08/2026 12:50

Can’t wait for it to rain! The grass everywhere looks horrible. Need the green back!

Somersetbaker · 12/08/2026 13:08

Somebody I know is going to a meeting about flood prevention tonight!

LeahLine · 12/08/2026 13:18

YABU. I'm up north. We are not in a drought and today is the first day for weeks it's got above 21 degrees and I'm working. It's back down to 20 degrees at the weekend according to the forecast. We have had rain on and off for the last few weeks.

Tired of hearing people moaning about the heatwave. I want to go out and enjoy the sunshine without having to keep a jacket on against the chill breeze or take a raincoat.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 12/08/2026 13:25

Agree but when I inevitably get caught out and end up with really frizzy hair I will probably have a minor moan.
