Next week it’s going to forecast rain and cooler weather. Yay! Dreading the next few days beforehand

No one should moan about it raining until the grass has turned green.

Oh, it will 😀. And here in Scotland we’ll moan about the rain as much as we like, thanks. We haven’t had a heatwave. “Everywhere” isn’t just the south of England.

It was bloody freezing here in June and pouring frequently. Walk the dogs, get soaked, need the heating on.

Long standing joke in Scotland, Summer is July. Only July. True to form here. It's been nice the last couple of days but it was cold at the weekend.

I’m in an area where there hasn’t been a shortage of rain so I demand a free pass to moan when it does rain again.

Me too.

We have had a great summer in the west of Scotland, with a few rainy days thrown in to keep things green.

Hope this weather continues, it’s still not hot enough for me though!
I would love it if it’s 35c or hotter 12 months of the year, I’m in the West Country and I’ve yet to set foot on the beach because it’s not warm enough for me

School holiday too long for you love?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2026 09:27

After living in deserts for 13 years, I’ve always appreciated rain, and never more so than now - we’ve had not a drop for weeks!

My young adult students in a desert Arab country once ran out of my class to go and enjoy a brief and very unusual rain shower outside. They called it ‘God’s bounty’.

YABU Moaning about the weather is a British pastime.

dontmalbeconme · 12/08/2026 09:27

It's been a glorious summer here, ruined mostly by incessant whingers. I know we need rain for wildlife and crops, but I'd much prefer the rain stuck to overnights and we kept the glorious hot days.

As it happens we only have one day of "light showers" forecast here next week.

2026letsgo · 12/08/2026 09:30

The only moaning should be from farmers. My friend lost his entire friend of freshly baled fine hay to fire last week. Thats an expensive field up in smoke.
Together with fertiliser and fuel prices sky high it will cost us all in the coming months.

But even with the heatwaves we didn’t have a hosepipe ban until July precisely because winter and spring were so wet.

MargaretThursday · 12/08/2026 09:33

I think if your holiday is next week then it's fair enough to moan.

I'd definitely have felt put out if I'd coped all summer with the hot weather in my office then it rained as soon as I went on holiday.
Although the rain looks like on the BBC about a 30% chance for a short time on Monday, and the Met Office has it lower than 10% so I don't think there'll be much.

Agree, there are some really thick people on MN banging on about how wonderful it all is. They really are ignorant if they think this year is a one off for extreme heat.
We can't always 'just import foods' because other countries are in the same position as us. and will need more for their own people. Food prices will go up on many things, people will be complaining they can't buy xyz - really? There was no rain to help grow the bloody stuff. But we have the heat to who cares if there is a shortage on certain foods come winter? If the same happens next year and the crops fail again through lack of rain we could really be in the shit.
I was talking with someone the other day who said if the crops fail and there is a bread shortage she would go over to eating muffins or cereals like Weetabix. What a total fuckwit. When I pointed out about wheat might not be sp plentiful so less bakery and cereal products available she looked at me as if I was the stupid one. "Well, Tesco will always have bread and what I need to buy" was the response. You can'r argue with idiots.
Okay love, keep your ignorant head up your ignorant arse.

Let them eat cake?

Some people are unbearably thick, I don’t know how they get through life!

VeronicaRaven · 12/08/2026 09:37

I will moan about whatever I like, thank you very much, last time I checked it was still a free country🤣
I'm loving the weather. Finally a proper summer.
I know we need some rain but it doesn't mean I'm looking forward to it.

I'm sure you'll be moaning about the huge increase in the price of bread in a couple of months time when the failed harvests start to bite. We're on course for one of the worst on record.

I've said this to everyone and I'll say it on here: if you have the ability to bake your own bread, start stocking up on bread flour now because prices are about to go through the roof.

PurplePi · 12/08/2026 09:40

squashyhat · 12/08/2026 08:57

There will be a huge amount of runoff and flooding when it does rain because the ground is so hard. Storm drains which councils have not taken the opportunity to clear will not cope. And still idiots pave over driveways, install plastic grass and chop down trees.

We must be in a good council area - they were around cleaning out the drains earlier this week. I was very impressed.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 12/08/2026 09:40

You can all thank me for the rain. Last week I booked a last minute week off and an AirBnB in the Cotswolds for next week.

Next day I looked at the 10 day forecast and a load of rain clouds had appeared all over it.

So, it's obviously entirely my fault. Maybe I could start a business booking holidays in rain-starved places, bring the rain back to them!

DierdreDaphne · 12/08/2026 09:42

Pedant61 · 12/08/2026 08:59

Oh I might, because I have loved having a Proper Summer, and I don't want it to end! (I do know that farmers need rain, but why can't the rest of us just enjoy what we have?).

A lot of people aren't enjoying it Im afraid. It is interfering with a lot of basic necessities - food, water and energy - so prices are probably going to be rising. Which will affect pretty much everone.

Sadly the other issue that takes the edge off the pleasure for me at least, is that future summers will probably be increasingly hot and possibly increasingly dry especially in the South East of the country.

So by all means enjoy it, but don't be surprised if a lot of other people are fed up and worried.

LondonLass2026 · 12/08/2026 09:42

People will moan whatever happens, and whatever weather we get, people will complain and whine for the opposite.

Fairyliz · 12/08/2026 09:44

I’m assuming you are not British because surely it’s in out dna to moan about the weather?
Too hot/cold/wet/foggy.
At least we always have a topic to make small talk about.

Greengage1983 · 12/08/2026 09:51

I am just so sad about this new climate pattern continuing - drought and unbroken heat all summer, then seemingly never-ending, heavy rain all autumn and winter.

The heavier-than-usual rain in winter over the last 2-3 years is speeding up the decline of local historical monuments here.

We used to have it so good, when the rain was more evenly spread out throughout the year.

Let them eat cake?

Some people are unbearably thick, I don’t know how they get through life!

I am not thick. I have 2 degrees, a highly challenging career, I read a huge amount. I understand the ramifications of climate change and am concerned about the consequences. That doesn’t mean I am holed up at home crying and ranting into the sky at the state of the world. I am enjoying the summer, I enjoy the heat, most of all I’m enjoying the stability to plan things and not have the weather scupper my plans.

That does not mean I don’t ever give thought to the wider ramifications, or what it means for us in the long term. But if you were as intelligent as you seem to think you are, you’d know humans are nuanced, that we can believe and feel multiple things at the same time, that we can still make the most of situations. We would lead small and pointless lives if we felt we needed to act and be a certain way all the time to give off ‘intelligence’.

3peassuit · 12/08/2026 09:59

I do love the sun but I live in Kent where we are desperate for rain.

PollyBell · 12/08/2026 10:03

Ok good to know, so what do you think can be done about it if they do?

Linetree · 12/08/2026 10:05

It's a bit weird for apparently intelligent people to be worried about what others are wishing for. We're going to get the weather we get.

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/08/2026 10:19

It's my birthday on Wednesday 19th and I can advise that it usually does rain on my birthday and that's a pattern over 62 years. Regardless of how hot or not the summers have been, the good weather has always been liable to break around this time. My lovely dad always commented on it. live in the new forest where we have the big fire and are all desperate for rain, but we need at least 2 weeks where it rains every day to get everything green again and bring the fire risk right down.

FoxandDuck · 12/08/2026 10:21

Drat it, OP, you got me all excited then! But I’ve just checked our forecast and there’s a chance of some rain on Monday morning and that’s it. I doubt we’ll get any as, in similar forecasts, I have seen grey clouds but we haven’t had any actual rain. The farm a mile or so from us last had rain on June 23rd and I think we must be the same.
We were on holiday last week and there was a gentle shower whilst I was lying by the pool. All of those from the SE of England were immediately identifiable I felt as we just stayed where we were with a soft smile on our faces!
What I want, is for the climate to go back to proper English weather. Yes, there was the downside of never knowing what the weather would be like but, whilst I am desperate for these endless heatwaves to disappear, I didn’t enjoy the endless rain earlier in the year. I feel as though I have spent a disproportionate amount of time stuck inside this year due to either the rain or the heat

MrsMurphyIWish · 12/08/2026 10:29

was getting excited but I’m in West Mids and there’s a slight chance of rain Friday for an hour. I’m sure that will cool down the 36 degrees predicted tomorrow. I’ve forgotten what a green garden is supposed to look like. I’m just hoping it cools down by Sept. I really struggled in my classroom last term.

Nat6999 · 12/08/2026 10:29

I wouldn't moan if it rained non stop for a month, I'm done with the hot weather. I half expected it to start raining the day after the kids broke up for the 6 week holidays, that is what usually happens.
