AIBU to ask how much your husbands contribute to household bills?

To ask how much your husbands pay into the family home? Does he expect you to pay half the bills, does he pay them all etc?

Separate bank accounts plus a joint account for bills which he pays 5x more into than I do. Which seems unfair as he only earns 2x what I do, but he doesn’t deal with any kid related expenses (costly with teenagers!). It’s all family money at the end of the day so it doesn’t really matter who pays what, as long as it gets paid!

AlexFurbison · 11/08/2026 19:02

We pool all our money - he earns loads more than me but it's always been our money, no matter who earns what.

Traitorsclaudia · 11/08/2026 19:04

All of it.

We used to be 50:50 pre DC but now he out earns me massively so he pays the bills. I used to pay half the monthly mortgage payment but we paid that off a couple of years ago.

Error404FucksNotFound · 11/08/2026 19:05

We share everything. Between us, it's all covered. We've been married nearly 30 years. There have been times he's earned more and there have been times I have. I haven't done the maths but I assume it all evens out in the end.

Dontcallmescarface · 11/08/2026 19:05

Separate accounts but 1 joint account for bills. He puts in 25% less than me because I earn 25% more than him.

SiobahnRoy · 11/08/2026 19:05

We pool our income and always have, each of us has out earned the other at different stages. We pay ourselves a monthly allowance for personal spending.

KarcherK5 · 11/08/2026 19:06

He pays everything, I look after the kids and household.

AgnesX · 11/08/2026 19:07

We have a joint account for all the bills and some treats like holidays. He pays 70:30 as that's what we agreed when we moved in.

GreenDogDot · 11/08/2026 19:07

Earn around the same. Husband moved in with me so all house stuff in my name and set up with my account so he has a standing order to transfer me half of all the bills. Separate accounts but we 50/50 everything else on a fairly casual basis - you did food shop last week so I’ll do it this week etc.

Lampzade · 11/08/2026 19:08

I have my own money / savings but my husband chooses to pay for everything .

HeyThereDelila · 11/08/2026 19:09

All money is shared in our marriage; joint accounts. He earns a lot more than me but we both see the money as “ours”.

Petrie999 · 11/08/2026 19:12

I earn around 1.5k more pm but we split most bills equally, at his insistence (used to be on equal salaries). But I pay for our family car finance (his costs nothing), nursery fees, my own commuting costs and more for big repairs, holidays and savings etc. Joint account for bills. This leaves us with the same amount of fun money so it feels equal

edwinbear · 11/08/2026 18:56

I earn 3 x DH’s salary, so he pays 1/3, I pay 2/3. I pay for family holidays, work needed on the house etc.

You’re underpaying. Should be 75% you 25% him

Iloveeverycat · 11/08/2026 19:14

BranClaps · 11/08/2026 18:49

He pays 100% of the bills, mortgage etc

This, I work part time and only pay for the food shopping.

HatAndScarf33 · 11/08/2026 19:18

We just pool all our money in one account. It’s just ‘our’ money then. When it comes to bigger personal purchases we run it past each other but otherwise don’t monitor each others spending. He earns more because I work less hours.

PeterIsAlwaysBusy · 11/08/2026 19:18

All in one pot with an amount automatically transferred to our own bank accounts to spend as we wish no questions asked. The amount is exactly the same.

The joint pot covers all bills, food, car stuff, petrol even though Dh used to travel further to work than me. We had regular conversations about money, savings, where we intended to cut back, what we planned for the coming year. We are married so the money is family money.

The joint pot means you see the other person's salary so any bonuses or pay rises cannot be hidden.

WineCharm · 11/08/2026 18:49

He pays them all. He pays them all when I work, when I don't work, when we both work. When I make more, when he makes more etc.

Same! X

westcott · 11/08/2026 19:20

He pays more than half as he earns more

Glittertwins · 11/08/2026 19:21

Joint account for everything. anything left over goes to ISAs

LadySlipper · 11/08/2026 19:24

All our money goes in one pot. I work out what we need to cover bills and expenses, put a chunk in joint savings (Isas, premium bonds, instant access accounts) and we spend what we want with what's left. Neither one of us would make a big spend without consulting/agreeing with the other. He earns more than three times than I do, but he got to that level with my support, being a SAHM, working part-time and then full time. All the money is 'our' money.o

Toodaloos · 11/08/2026 19:24

Husband pays all bills, council tax, food shops, mortgage etc. I used to pay childcare but no longer required. I pay my car insurance, house insurance, and my bills (phone etc). I also save regularly and overpay mortgage if I have spare cash each month.

Kittybway · 11/08/2026 19:26

We pay a proportionate amount into a joint account because he earns 3 x me. Thats all shared expenses, mortgage, bills, childcare costs, car expenses, money for fuel, food. We pay proportionate amount into a savings account and into our kids accounts too

augustfairytale · 11/08/2026 19:27

Foughties · 11/08/2026 18:48

One pot. Spreadsheet. What's left is halved and in our private accounts. He earns almost 4 x my salary.

This. There's been times I'm the higher earner and times he is, but we're always a partnership. Equal spending money and joint savings after the bills are paid, irregardless of who gets paid what.

Walker1178 · 11/08/2026 19:28

Long term DP, we’re not married and he earns around £10k more than me a year. We contribute the same amount into the joint account which covers all shared household expenses.

We pay for our own car and contribute to holidays equally. He picks up all the extras though like days/meals out and tends to pay for everything that’s unplanned so when my car needed £550 thrown at it and the cooker needed replacing recently he paid for those too.

crazymommaclub · 11/08/2026 19:28

We used to split household expenses and bills 50/50, but since we had a child my hours dropped to 4 days a week and he got a promotion so now he contributes a greater amount so that we have a similar amount of disposable income each
