I actually agree that we need control of our borders and that the asylum system shouldn't be costing billions. Where I disagree is pretending that immigration is the reason Britain can't afford everything else.
We keep arguing amongst ourselves about migrants while avoiding the much bigger question: where is the economic plan? Where is the investment in British workers, skills, apprenticeships, technology, automation, infrastructure and businesses that actually increases productivity and grows the tax base?
Legal migration, asylum seekers and illegal entry aren't interchangeable either. Net migration has already fallen dramatically, yet that hasn't magically fixed the NHS, pensions, defence or our living standards.
By all means stop irregular migration and run a controlled immigration system. But unless Britain becomes more productive and grows its economy, we're still going to be arguing about how to fund public services afterwards. Immigration policy isn't a substitute for an economic strategy.
