Butt on display at lunch in south of France

I am currently having lunch in a beach restaurant and a girl with a lovely toned body is wearing a tiny thong with full ass on display. This seems to be a fashion thing and there are lots of women wearing the same cheese cutter! People are staring and some women are laughing. I find it a horrible trend and I am wondering what others think.

I'm not sickened - that's a bit hyperbolic!

'Gross' is an very unpleasant way to describe a woman. That makes me <checks notes> a 'victorian lady' apparently. Or, a non judgemental tolerant person which we should all aim to be.

The reason I say that is: I would be responding to a particular question and there's been a kind of trend on this thread as follows:

PP says 'what's wrong with buttocks on a seat in a cafe?'

I (and others) respond: because of the hygiene aspect.

PP says: what do you mean? My buttocks aren't covered in shit (this was an actual comment).
I then come back with more of a detailed explanation that is really required to explain the problem with a thong or a string as opposed to shorts, pants or other more covering garments. So I didn't start off wanting to go into grim detail - people push for it, and then go all dainty and take offence at the explanation they themselves have asked for.

It's been very tedious and has derailed the discussion. I hope this will clarify things - but it's all there for you to read. Just don't quote out of context, please.

I'll just say this once more for the people at the back:

There are 2 aspects of OP's situation which have been discussed to death here:

1. the public decency angle - what's acceptable/appropriate/in line with feminism or not. That's what interests me most.

2. the hygiene aspect - the implications of what is effectively a bare bottom on a seat others will use. The 'near naked' point is because of the thong/string - other skimpy clothing would be fine (shorts, bigger pants etc).

I think....I've explained precisely these points maybe 4 times already on this thread.

If you're new to it, please can I politely ask you to read the whole discussion before asking those of us who've been here from the start to repeat it all again out of context.

if you read all my posts, and take into account the context (eg a particular question I was responding to) I think you'll find it makes some kind of sense.

Actually yes . Speedos are acceptable swimwear and there is nothing out of the ordinary about them .mankini id be like wtf the same way i would be about a woman in a thong

I personally find it distasteful and inappropriate - have you read my posts above? It's all very clear there.

I wouldn't dream in a million years of saying anything or laughing at anyone. I'm a Londoner and if you have the attitude that you point and laugh at oddly dressed people, you won't last 5 mins!

You could argue that speedos are sportswear designed to minimise drag while racing in the water. No, I don't personally want to scrutinise them at eye level anywhere other than a pool!

But a mankini - is it really a thing? I only know them from clips of Borat.

That's a ridiculous outfit because...well, do I have to spell it out? It's designed to draw attention to the genitals and it's not clear at all what function it has which is an improvement on ordinary trunks.

Yup absolutely! I see no harm in calling out disgusting behaviour. Likewise if someone failed to pick up their dogs poo I’d comment on it. And if someone dropped litter. Why not? Why not expect better standards in public life?

I don't use words like trash, bitch, tart, whore or similar. I pick up on anything I hear on TV like that. My children have never used words like that in my hearing - and I'm sure nowhere else. Their friends are similar (hate the word, but I suppose you'd say 'woke').

I think there is pressure from the male gaze to wear certain things which doesn't apply to boys and men.

And just to add as well tanning is really really bad for your skin. Worse than smoking . It’s not really something that should be encouraged in my opinion, for those that argue it’s for tanning purposes . If it’s for tanning why aren’t men wearing them. Lots of men are into tanning as well yet you never see them walking around in thongs

Well - it is rather the subject of the thread! It's actually in the OP.

It's an interesting one for the reasons I've tried to explain and if you're at all interested in feminism and its implications, there's a lot to say.

Having worked in schools and seen what young girls wear sometimes I've given a lot of thought. I don't like the way things have gone and I worry that girls are falling victim to misogynistic trends born out of pornography. I think they are dancing to the tune of nasty men - again.

It's just so alien to the feminism I remember from my youth. That's why I'm so invested.

Not using misogynistic hate speech is not being woke It is the most basic in acceptable social behaviour. Sadly so many nasty criticisms on this very thread prove some aren't up to speed with what is an acceptable way to describe women.

What’s an acceptable way of describing someone doing something unacceptable in public? It may be acceptable to you but it isn’t to me. I’d describe a man out and about topless as scum too. I’m not misogynistic in my words. I just want my kids to know fully what standards of public decency they should expect from society.
