Butt on display at lunch in south of France

I am currently having lunch in a beach restaurant and a girl with a lovely toned body is wearing a tiny thong with full ass on display. This seems to be a fashion thing and there are lots of women wearing the same cheese cutter! People are staring and some women are laughing. I find it a horrible trend and I am wondering what others think.

It's a snapshot isn't it of how some judge women. Harshly and inappropriately. Dressed up as concern and it is appalling.

Good point. And the test question is: if we would find this unacceptable, off-putting, gross etc for a man, especially an older man - why is it OK for women?

The answer is simple: it panders to the male gaze and a lot of men (not all) and some women definitely like that.

Exactly. I don’t understand why disliking something has to be explained by envy. I think it’s perfectly possible to look at a newish fashion trend, think it has crossed a social norm around what is appropriate in a restaurant, and simply not like it. There doesn’t have to be anything more complicated behind it.

As I said, how do you think people would've reacted if it had been a man in a thong behaving the same way? Personally, I think they would've been much harsher, so I don't think taking issue with the thong is misogyny, no.

As I've said If you were a man in a beach cafe in beach wear I'd carry on talking to the people I was with. I don't stare at other people bodies, it's basic social etiquette.

Just for the record - I don't mind slangy terms - they are funny and amusing. Particularly butt, backside, arse...but not bum, for some reason I can't fathom. Bum is both twee and childish, I think.
