Butt on display at lunch in south of France

1000 replies

flipperfizz · 11/08/2026 13:32

I am currently having lunch in a beach restaurant and a girl with a lovely toned body is wearing a tiny thong with full ass on display. This seems to be a fashion thing and there are lots of women wearing the same cheese cutter! People are staring and some women are laughing. I find it a horrible trend and I am wondering what others think.

I have to say, I think the nit-picking on here is amazing, even for MN!

I think all the pps who are in the 'she was right our of order!' camp have explained their viewpoint exhaustively.

Those who don't understand their objections keep asking for further explanation and detail...but there's only so much detail available. I think I've given all I have to give now. If anyone is not clear, I promise I've put it all in my posts to the best of my ability.

You might not agree, but then we'll have to live with that!

Because - shock horror - I find the smell of excrement unpleasant. So shoot me.

This is a perfectly natural biological response - we have evolved to feel like this to protect us from eating dangerous things.

Some people will feel it very strongly, others not so much. I'm a veggie - and I always find the poo of herbivorous creatures (horses, cows) far less offensive than that of carnivores. We've all trodden on dog poo and it's vile! But horses, not so much - people put it on their roses quite happily.

Humans are carnivores and I think they are quite smelly. To argue that human poo is not unpleasant would be very difficult, I think. There's no shame in the smell - it's a biological reality - but to pretend that the backside and waste products are just like any other part of the body - the ear, for eg - is silly.

I live in a coastal town in the UK. Thong/Brazilian bikini bottoms everywhere. They seem to have been in fashion for a while now. One young relative told me that bums are no longer considered private parts. If this was the case, why don’t we put children in them? Very confusing for little children who have grown up with Pantasaurus (cartoon character who tells children that anything covered by pants is private). Not sure how you would explain that to
them! Same young relative (female), who wears a thong bikini, and feels empowered doing so, was outraged that an older man was staring at her bum when she was queuing for an icecream. Wrong
to stare at anyone imo, but surely not surprising. The beach in 2026 must be a wonderful place for a certain type of man.

Great post! This is exactly the sort of nuance I was getting at. Of course women should be able to wear what they choose, and staring at someone is rude. But we can also acknowledge that completely exposing your bottom will attract attention, particularly from some men, without blaming the woman for that attention. Choice, consequences and social expectations can all and should be discussed without shaming anyone.

Because I've been accused of so many bizarre things on this thread - being a poo troll (er - what's that??) and being obsessed with poo etc, I wanted to forestall an accusation of being proud of finding poo unpleasant. I think we all do, but in different degrees. I've learned through experience that I'm somewhere in the middle - not the most sensitive, but not able to just shrug it off.

Honestly, there've been so many weird interpretations of my posts on here today!

'Feeling empowered' is a pretty lie. Having actual power is what matters, just to be clear.

And are you talking purely about clothes, or more generally?

That's your interpretation. As I said before, a lot of assumptions are being made. If someone feels empowered, then that feeling is real to them, that's their power.... Not giving a fuck about what anybody else thinks!
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I think a line is crossed when people start discussing and judging a younger woman they've never met, including commenting on her appearance with a man and claiming others were laughing at her. In my view, the simplest approach is to leave her alone, avert your gaze and let her live her life... And no matter how many people are going to tell me that "it's not true".... It comes from a place of jealousy!!

Gloriia · 12/08/2026 14:02

GaaNeen · 12/08/2026 13:33

You are missing the nuance in communication -

what I suggested was a supportive chat, that undermines the staring mocking people,

not your reading of this that says you think I suggested you should comment on what she is not wearing !!!!

maybe that inability to read the finer details is why this thread has blown up -
you don’t see your contribution / collusion to the staring and laughing -

by not calling it out
by bringing it here as a light banter
when there is a real person - a young woman -
getting mocked / judged for her beachwear -
not OK !

Oh but we are 'victorian maiden aunts' we need smelling salts and fans if we point out the disgusting observations and piss taking comments about 'jiggling arses', tampon strings and 'bumholes' are not ok.

The lack of self awareness is astounding. Commenting and disapproving of a fashion item is fine, to a degree. The constant mockery of those who wear items some would not and those standing up for women and their choices is not.

Well - I think some people might imagine I'm making myself out to be a delicate, Jane Austen heroine who might faint away at what is a normal human function. I have met people like that - they're always making a massive fuss about smells which no-one else has even noticed - it can be a sort of competitive 'daintiness'.

I'd hate anyone to put me in that category!

At one point my son had an ileostomy and I had to deal with that. But that was my son...I don't necessarily think I could do it for other people...unless I had to, of course, and then I'd woman up.

Really? How do you think wearing a thong bikini is empowering? What actual power does exposing her buttocks give a woman?

Interesting. Would it be okay if the woman was the same age or older? If the woman was not discussed with a man? Why do you say 'claiming' others were laughing? And why do you think it's jealousy? You seem to be making a lot of assumptions yourself.

I'm not 'implying' anything, I am saying quite plainly- you were being rude and judgemental, and started a thread so other people would join in.

Edited

Yes. The question is why do some women judge other women so harshly? Why do they use such awful mocking to describe their clothes and actions? <pp please don't say there's been no mocking I've giving you 2 examples I cba to keep c&p, just rtft)

If women choose to wear a thong in a beach cafe. So. What.

We've heard desperate repeated reasons about the patriarchy, the poor chairs, attention seeking, its all for the menz, even hygiene and what happens to bums when we sit Confused

It is none of those. It is just disapproval. Sniffy, snobby, judgy disapproval.

OtterlyAstounding · 12/08/2026 14:18

If a man had worn nothing but a thong to the beach restaurant, had kept getting up and finding cause to bend over, and had been quietly giggled at by some local middle-aged women, I wonder what the comments on this thread would've been 🤔

If I was at the beach place you know what, I'd just chat to my friends and family. Read a book, look at the scenery. Other people's bums would not feature on my list of interests.

The op and others should follow my example Grin

Why? If they're quietly entertained (or shocked) by someone having their naked bottom out right in front of everyone, why is that an issue?

it's not so much that it's a thong, it could be anything. OP has already said that she has a fantastic body... She obviously does not care what anyone else thinks of her, and she is confident in her own skin.... That's empowering!

Age isn't really relevant here, jealousy comes from all ages. A common trait of jealousy is trying to bring someone else down through ridicule in order to feel superior about yourself. The OP has also gone to the trouble to bring it to a board to get validation whilst in the South of France.... Madness.... It reeks of envy!

What's empowering about that, though? What about feeling comfortable having your naked bottom out, gives you any real power?

Personally, I think it reeks of having the social norm that people shouldn't have their bottoms out at a restaurant, and being shocked/taken aback that someone broke that norm.
What exactly is there to be envious of?

I think we need to move beyond this simplistic mindset.

There are other reasons to want to discuss new and - sometimes shocking - fashion choices than being jealous or worrying that your he-man will drag the other woman back to his cave.

This has all been gone over upthread (like so many other issues).

If women started, for eg, wearing totally bare breasts in everyday life, I'd be wanting to understand this, to hear what other people thought, to hear what effect it was having in society as a whole.

I wouldn't be jealous and I wouldn't be worried about my husband.

I can't help thinking some pps project their own insecurities on to other posters.

Not liking something does not translate as jealousy.

RobertaFirmino · 12/08/2026 14:32

It's France. They make sausages out of rectums there, a pair of arse cheeks on display is nothing.

Exactly. Not liking something doesn’t automatically mean jealousy or insecurity. Sometimes you simply find a new fashion trend interesting, excessive or inappropriate for the setting and want to discuss it. I think that’s all my original post was doing.
