AIBU to be annoyed guests announced vegan diets on arrival?

I have guests. They have stayed before. No dietary requirements and no food dislikes. To accommodate them my child has to vacate her bedroom and spend the week on an airbed in our room which she very kindly does. Anyway guests have arrived and I have shopped, meal planned and prepared lunch, homemade quiche etc . They have now said “since we last visited we have both become vegetarian and dairy free as it is healthier” - so basically vegan. I am so annoyed. Had I been given the heads up I could have prepared and shopped accordingly . Aibu to be hacked off and have said that given their failure to let me know I won’t be able to accommodate that but can use what I have bought and minimise the amount of meat or they can shop for their own supplies and cook for us all? To be clear had I known in advance I would have accommodated their dietary fads. To be clear there is no medical grounds for any of this. They were already getting a week of free food and board and as we live in a very desirable holiday location would have been paying in the region of £800 to book an air BnB. They are not really family either and have in the past been ok guests though last time they were bemused I had not taken A week off to entertain them and take them places.

How on earth did they not think to tell you?! They sound like absolute freeloaders OP.

Bonkers1966 · 11/08/2026 11:32

They sound entitled. OP, you are doing very well holding your temper. Don't let them walk all over you. Jeez

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/08/2026 11:32

Unbelievable behaviour from your guests! Obviously yanbu to be annoyed.

Noshowlomo · 11/08/2026 11:33

They sound cheeky as fuck. Tell them they need to buy some of their own food then, you hadn’t planned a dairy free shop.
Honestly, sounds like they’re using you for your location! They won’t be staying again will they.
Do they even take you for a meal or buy you anything to say thanks?

MarthaLovesLaughing · 11/08/2026 11:34

I'd tell them to fuck off to a hotel. Such rudeness and such lack of consideration

SilenceInside · 11/08/2026 11:34

They should have told you, but it also sounds like you very much dislike them and don't even want them to be staying! Why have you invited them to stay for the week again, if you were hacked off last time and don't really like them??

Yes

Gardenisablooming · 11/08/2026 11:35

Ah you'd best do your own shopping and cooking then. You can use the kitchen first...
And bloody mean it.

Nearly50omg · 11/08/2026 11:35

Why are you even letting them stay?!!! Tell
them to go and book an Airbnb!!

Justanopinionnothingmore · 11/08/2026 11:36

You are not being unreasonable at all. But I also would have said well a heads up would have been nice so I could prepare for it all. I've bought food now that you can't eat. So speak up and don't be silent about it. They can fend for themselves!

Relaxd · 11/08/2026 11:37

Just tell them what you have planned and they are welcome to get different food in if they’d like and then indicate who they can get a delivery from. Do not change anything majorly now you’ve spent money. If they are a reasonably good friend I’d also ask why on earth didn’t they say much earlier? I’d also check if it’s just a preference than a hard rule.

oviraptor21 · 11/08/2026 11:37

Maybe suggest they buy and prepare their own food for the week as you have already planned for your family and don't want to waste any of the food you have bought.

TishHope · 11/08/2026 11:37

I would be unavailable next time they decide they want a free holiday with you.

SettledAndHappy · 11/08/2026 11:38

I have a family member who stopped being vegetarian because they were invited out to lunch, the hosts dished up meat and they realised they'd forgotten to tell them they were veggie. They realised it would be really rude & inconsiderate to tell the hosts at that point so just ate it.

SereneFinch · 11/08/2026 11:38

Yeah, I’d just tell them what you have planned and if they won’t eat particular meal, then they need to supply food themselves.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 11/08/2026 11:38

Speaking as a ‘faddy’ vegetarian, they are being very unreasonable. Carry on as you are and let them sort themselves out but don’t let them take over your kitchen, it’s yours and you are cooking for your family. Cafes, restaurants and supermarkets exist so they can go there.

And don’t invite them again.

HumberSquid · 11/08/2026 11:39

It's not just about the food is it? Why are you hosting people when you clearly begrudge them the space and the effort (and the saving in cost)?

Yes, of course, they should have told you about their change in diet. But Im not sure its true to say there's no health reason for it. Almost everyone would benefit health-wise by more veg, pulses etc.

Silverbirchleaf · 11/08/2026 11:39

That’s plain rude.

Gooseling · 11/08/2026 11:40

Don’t ever make you daughter vacate her bedroom to accommodate these twats ever again.

AprilMizzel · 11/08/2026 11:40

Massively inconsiderate guests not to have informed you prior to arrival.

However I must be a bad host because even for family I refused to make the kids give up their rooms till they've left for uni- no sleeping on airbeds anywhere in house till adults.

sweetpickle2 · 11/08/2026 11:42

They're knobs for not telling you till they got there and expecting to be catered for, but it doesn't sound like you wanted them there in the first place- "To accommodate them my child has to vacate her bedroom and spend the week on an airbed in our room" is neither here nor there if that's what you suggested/agreed to.

I would just say to them "oh I wish you'd told me in advance as obviously I have already catered now, I can give you directions to Tesco". If they're veggie/dairy free there will be some things they can eat, and they can go buy themselves stuff for the rest.

Mulledjuice · 11/08/2026 11:44

"Oh dear what a shame you didnt tell me earlier - I have meal planned and shopped and prepped. Here is my meal plan for you to take a look at what I have planned".

Then either offer solution of choice -
Eg "I'm happy to run you to the supermarket and wait while you pick up anything you want + drive you home" or "the nearest supermarket is X and the number 59 bus will drop you closest"
Or "let me know which meals you want to join us for and which ones you'll head out to find something that fits your regime"

  • or offer no solution and let rhem work it out.
Thisismyfinesthour · 11/08/2026 11:44

If I go anywhere to eat out or visit anyone where food might be served. I check menus or let hosts know well in advance I'm vegan.
Sometimes take my own food if it helps the host, it's the right thing to do and is called good msnners.

PinkyFlamingo · 11/08/2026 11:44

Do not go amd shop for dairy free alternatives. What was their reaction when you said they would need to shop themselves?

PatioDwellers · 11/08/2026 11:44

Really? Really? They sound like they think they are staying in a hotel!
