AIBU to be annoyed guests announced vegan diets on arrival?

I have guests. They have stayed before. No dietary requirements and no food dislikes. To accommodate them my child has to vacate her bedroom and spend the week on an airbed in our room which she very kindly does. Anyway guests have arrived and I have shopped, meal planned and prepared lunch, homemade quiche etc . They have now said “since we last visited we have both become vegetarian and dairy free as it is healthier” - so basically vegan. I am so annoyed. Had I been given the heads up I could have prepared and shopped accordingly . Aibu to be hacked off and have said that given their failure to let me know I won’t be able to accommodate that but can use what I have bought and minimise the amount of meat or they can shop for their own supplies and cook for us all? To be clear had I known in advance I would have accommodated their dietary fads. To be clear there is no medical grounds for any of this. They were already getting a week of free food and board and as we live in a very desirable holiday location would have been paying in the region of £800 to book an air BnB. They are not really family either and have in the past been ok guests though last time they were bemused I had not taken A week off to entertain them and take them places.

So they one of those who think since they had made the effort and spent on travelling to you, once they’re there they no longer have to put their hands in their pockets, eh?
you’ve done well asking them to figure their food out.

TubeScreamer · 15/08/2026 21:00

Your guests have been incredibly rude and thoughtless

maxslice · 15/08/2026 21:20

I made a full Thanksgiving dinner once. My sister-in-law showed up with a bowl of limes. That’s all she ate. I wasn’t told in advance, but at least she provided her own meal.

Do them an omelette at every meal

Vegans don’t eat eggs.

Cardhey · 15/08/2026 21:48

Why will your dd need their help in the not so distance future??

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2026 21:53

I don’t know how to say this but do you really think they will step up when you’re gone ? Flowers

it’s YOU that needs to be taken care of

Allog · 15/08/2026 22:05

Tell them that this is not a vegan household and if they don’t like it they can go elsewhere

bananaobama · 15/08/2026 22:06

Make this their last visit!!!

It's not just about the food is it? Why are you hosting people when you clearly begrudge them the space and the effort (and the saving in cost)?

Yes, of course, they should have told you about their change in diet. But Im not sure its true to say there's no health reason for it. Almost everyone would benefit health-wise by more veg, pulses etc.

That doesn’t alter the fact that OP has made preparations for them without knowing about their change in diet.

I have a family member who stopped being vegetarian because they were invited out to lunch, the hosts dished up meat and they realised they'd forgotten to tell them they were veggie. They realised it would be really rude & inconsiderate to tell the hosts at that point so just ate it.

I have a friend who invited me over for dinner when she’d just had a baby. She had terrible PND and was very sleep deprived.

I’ve been veggie for 35 years and she knows this. In her sleep-deprived state, she clearly forgot, and she spent ages making moussaka with meat in it.

I ate as much pasta and veg as I could and left as much lamb as I could, and I didn’t say anything. She was in such a bad way and I didn’t want to do anything that made her feel rubbish. (If it had been an allergy, I’d have gone out and bought my own food, but it wasn’t)

Your friends are entitled arseholes, @Wtafdidido

Stinkybooks · 15/08/2026 22:32

Very unreasonable of them not to let you know well in advance and to check you were ok catering for their new diet.
But yabu to describe their diet as a fad unless it seems likely that it will be a short lived choice for them (Ive been veggie for 30 years so deffo not a fad for me!)

Conniebygaslight · 15/08/2026 22:34

”Oh that’s great to hear, I’m sure you’ve researched the area to find where your needs can be accommodated”

LoyalShaker · 15/08/2026 22:45

I would not go out of my way to host them again!

Why would you comment this ?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2026 23:00

Because they’re freeloaders and inconsiderate ! The OP has active terminal cancer, THEY should be shopping and cooking and looking after their friend

NOT freeloading

Offer them beans on toast as the alternative to anything you have preplanned which they claim they can't eat and do ensure they are the cheap, own brand supermarket beans.

Anything else they'll need to obtain themselves.

At least they then can't claim that you never offered an alternative. Job done!

Agreed. Beans on toast, jacket potato, roasted vegetables, soup and salad.

Floppyearedlab · 15/08/2026 23:40

I wouldn't accommodate faddy eating trends in my house.
A life threatening allergy or genuine medical requirement - fine. Not this.

So, you think being vegan is faddy? Do you think vegetarians are faddy aa well?

You sound uneducated.

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 08:37

Smile sweetly and direct them to nearest restaurant. Explain you had no idea they had become vegan or you would have prepared different food. Now you don't have time or additional money to do it all again but restaurants will be able to accommodate them.

maxslice · 15/08/2026 21:27

Vegans don’t eat eggs.

Surely vegetarian and dairy free means no meat or dairy but still eggs?

MischkasMum · 16/08/2026 11:35

You are definitely NOT being unreasonable! Tell them to go and shop for their new dietary requirements as you have already forked out for food for their stay. I think these folk are ripping the piss out of you and are just free-loading at your expense.

I'd ensure this is their last free holiday, ungrateful bastards. Oh, and if they make a song and dance about the food, tell them to fuck off to an hotel.

Whyherewego · 16/08/2026 11:37

This is so rude! You absolutely should tell them that these are the meals youve planned and shops have been done so they will need to go out and source their own vegan food
