AIBU to worry about a growing political divide in marriage?

Changed accounts
Is there anyone else dealing with real political divide in their marriage?
I don’t want to go into all the back story but I have a husband who seems so fixated on migrants and drifting into right wing political views that I couldn’t be any further from.

I’m not a complete lefty but I focus solely on the things that matter more so (I feel) what is impacting women’s rights, my children’s upbringing and I am a huge empath and have really struggled with the current world events such as the genocide(s) happening within the world and genuinely fall to bits about it but the only passion I see from my husband is how enraged he gets around the ’impact’ the migrants have coming in this country - Which my view as a woman, is we have a far bigger problems within our own societies, within our own men/people in this country committing horrendous crimes, especially against women and children, yet not a smidge I hear around this!
There’s so much I could share on the matter but I fear it could be counterproductive.

I genuinely love my husband and we have had battle after battle recently.. I am insisting on couples therapy as we are arguing about this stuff in front of our children but I really need help from those going / been through this and can help with a resolution?

I know he has his own mind and should steer how he chooses but I need to figure a way that I won’t put so much emotion into this, that it could really pull on my marriage.

Thanks!

Where did shouting come from?
Did you build that into the narrative of my marriage? Did not once mention shouting.

Edited

Just this, that's all. No building in of narrative.

" AI Overview
Writing in all capital letters means different things depending on whether it is digital text or physical handwriting. Online, it usually means shouting or extreme emphasis. "

Pah, you are alluding to me centring attention on what my initial ask, after continuous efforts to debate with me… Oh yes.

Many of us did.

And raised the issues which often stemmed from failed immigration policies and we were dismissed as right wing.

Once the issues became part of the public consciousness we were proven correct but some people can't accept the truth.

That 'don't you care about DV or homelessness' attitude is just the same false rhetoric we've experienced for years yet in the age of SM it's easy to say 'oh Tiktok said that' as a dismissal when it's actually people's lived experience.

Like I said before, it's the equivalent of a man saying 'women abuse too' during a discussion about VAWG or a trans-activist saying 'trans-women are women and not men' in a conversation about men in female spaces.

Or the white paedophile saying FGM is the problem that UK governments dont care about (he was quite infamous in the 90s)

It's all 'look over there, if these people aren't looking over there, they must be racist'.

And it really doesn't wash anymore.

You’re absolutely correct - it is “look over there”. It’s a shame that people have lost the critical faculties they need to see when they’re being manipulated.

You sound rather tiresome. You need to work out why this bothers YOU so much. Couples therapy might help, but really you need individual therapy to understand, and own, your own feelings, rather than blaming your husband. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and the fact that you find that so difficult is a red flag about yourself, not him.

Imagine being a woman and being right wing. Talk about voting against your own interests.

That comment was unnecessary but the Left have been happily trying to erase women for, at the very least, a decade. The Labour movement (and I say this as a centre Left Labour voter) have been no friend of women. Labour governments have brought in equality legislation but have had to do it against a background of intense hostility and opposition from the unions who are now enthusiastically throwing women members under the bus again.

The current labour government isn’t left wing though?

I have not made any effort, continuously or otherwise to debate with you and have deliberately kept my political views to myself. I realise that you were trying to bring the thread back to your initial post which is exactly what I and others have repeatedly tried to do, largely unsuccessfully.
If you choose to understand my posts as trying to engage in debate with you, that is your prerogative of course.
Good luck, and I mean that, with navigating your political differences with your husband.

Imagine being so shallow that you think every woman has to think like you do.

I’m red flagging all overrrrrrrr 🚩💃🏼

We already partake in individual taking therapies - Couple’s may be good for communication around such topics.
It equally bothers him, so by your standards we be red flagging togetherrrrr 🚩

Who is then? Are we back to the only 'true' Left and everyone else is Right wing? The Labour Party is a Centre Left political party that gets overrun by the Hard Left from time to time, becomes unelectable and then has to start again.

Sorry I think you are misunderstanding, you quoted that caps in another reply… right?

This wasn’t a message to you from what I recall? Though you alluded to shouting from the caps that presented in a message?

I was referring to why I used the caps in the first place as said individual was making constant attempts to debate, asking questions to further my own view points, I wasn’t willing to do this.

All very confusing when there are SO many divides in one room.

Why are you discussing these things in front of your children?

do you truly “fall to bits” as in cry and what not?

Presumably he spouts off his nonsense and she tries to shut it down so the kids don't have to listen to his racist rants

otherwise there is literally no need to continuously comment here.

Lefties this, lefties that. It’s mind numbing.

In all honesty, I’ve likely started the conversation - He attempts to stand his point and we both get a bit emosh 😬

Imagine being so shallow that you think every woman has to think like you do.

Imagine being so ignorant that you can’t see how systems and structures are being intentionally set up to make things worse for you and people like you. Or do you not care about things like abortion rights, maternity pay, discrimination in the workplace, the gender pay gap, educational outcomes for girls, trafficking - I could go on…

Do you not care about Islamic extremists raping and murdering white women? Do you not care about Trans pushing for women to be put to the bottom of the pile? My rights, as a woman are protected and always will be. I don't fall for the left's hyperbole about losing rights to abortion and any other rights that are protected by domestic legislation.

LuckyHazelFox · 09/08/2026 17:26

What do you mean by people like me @BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw

Kalanthe · 09/08/2026 17:29

The only way is to agree to disagree and have a pact that you don't discuss political topics at home, it's completely off limits. For the sake of your marriage.

He won't change his mind. Someone born with no empathy or common sense for social issues cannot be convinced by logical arguments. They lack the cognitive ability to put themselves in other person's shoes and understand what drives other people's decisions. They view everything from their own standpoint and disregard that others were born into different circumstances which has impact on their fate.

See, this is your very problem.
Though, these rights get over turned and you’ve got GREAT examples across the pond for where women’s autonomy has started to be stripped.

If you think that can’t happen here, then that’s just a pure head in the sand jobby that.
