AIBU to find it strange that husband is invited to wedding without me

My husband has been invited to one of his employees wedding, she has worked at his company for 20 years. The invite just has his name on the envelope and there is no name inside just a printed card. He replied online but it seems like it is just for him. It’s all day
We have been married for 40 years and would have never done this despite being on a low budget at the time.

It's weird to exclude a person's established partner.

Not these days it’s not. (In the UK anyway)

I think it’s weird and rude.

My husband would automatically refuse if I wasn’t invited. He’d not enjoy a wedding if I wasn’t there, and vice versa.

How depressing. So many people become codependent when they get married.

We don’t. But weddings are long and can be tedious. The protocol is to invite couples.

Presumably in this case there will be fellow colleagues present and surely you’d get along with at least some of them to make the day out enjoyable in their company.

Thriftnugget · 07/08/2026 11:03

Pedantry perhaps but church weddings are public events. Anyone can attend. The reception, of course, is a different matter.

Thanks all ,we can close off the comments now.

MN doesn’t work like that 🤣 it’s an open forum, this can go on as long as anyone posts.

Battyasacat · 07/08/2026 11:06

Hopefully not too much longer @MySneakyLion 😂

She doesn't have the budget to give plus ones to colleagues? If she's never met you I can't really see why you'd even want to go to her wedding. And she may not even know you exist.

Would your husband think it weird if you were invited a colleague's wedding that he'd never met and he wasn't?

I honestly think it seems pretty normal. If you invite the office, adding a plus one to all of those people is a big expense. Especially if you literally do not know any of their partners?

Didimum · 07/08/2026 11:12

Colleague groups is the one exemption for not inviting partners in my book, but everyone will have their own view on wedding etiquette.

DH and I have been invited solo to so many colleague weddings – so many more than invited together. I have never found it strange at all.

I know all the team but not well. He would find it very strange going to a wedding especially a church wedding without me.

What happens if he goes in to a church alone? Does he burst into flames like a vampire?

IsItSnowing · 07/08/2026 11:17

Why would you even want to go to your husband's work colleague's wedding? We got married 40 years ago, my work team all came, nice group of people so considered them friends. They came together as a group. No plus ones. That would have been much weirder to me than just inviting the team. I never met any of their partners in all the time I knew them. My husband didn't invite his work colleagues at all as he didn't consider them friends.

Is that why you think he will decline the invitation?

Spot on @nomas 👍

Why else would he refuse to enter a church wedding alone?

Nighthop · 07/08/2026 11:38

Hopefully he will go and have a lovely time and you can plan to have a good day doing something nice.
Hopefully he won't refuse because you are not invited. That would be a little pathetic?

I like this idea.

I disagree with practically everyone here - it's weird and rude to invite just one of a couple. A wedding's about becoming a couple, you should at least pretend to celebrate your guests' partnerships on the day!

For my weddings and other friends', colleagues were always invited plus one. They often came without their partners (and then, annoyingly, stuck together in work-related cliques) but that was their choice, not the hosts'.

If you can't afford to host people courteously, invite fewer people.

Every paragraph dripping with disapproval.

PorcupineOnline · 07/08/2026 11:46

I invited my whole team to my wedding (about 7 people) and i didn't even think to invite their partners.

That’s your protocol, it’s definitely not universal.

Why is it stranger going to a church wedding without a partner than a ceremony? What's the significance of the church that means his other half has to be there?
I don't find it weird. I've been to five work weddings, none included a plus one on the invite. I suppose the thinking is that we could keep each other company, rather than the couple inviting strangers also.

Does this happen at posh weddings?
