Came across partners “cons” list about me. What to do

Devondigspigs · 06/08/2026 11:27

Well, I know I haven’t been deliberately unreasonable but honestly no idea what to do.

me (34) and DP (34). The start of the relationship was turbulent - he had recently been made redundant and got a new role, but had also come out of a relationship that ended sooner to ours starting than I knew (no cheating, but instead of 6 months apart as I thought, it was a lot less). He clearly wasn’t over this and bad at hiding it. This paired with him letting me down at a work event meant last summer (2025) I broke it off. A month later he came back wanting to try again, we took it slowly and got back together. It has been great since.

FF to Saturday. He has a room of big bookshelves which are getting replaced with fitted cupboards so books taken down. At the end of the day, there was a notebook left on the floor that had been stacked in the shelves. I picked it up and a list fell out, my name was on it so I looked and it was purely all my bad points, or perceived ones. Eg - very anxious about non existent problems, works too much, not conscientious with money. All of these are fair points, harsh to see them written down (I would argue I’m just not tight re money).

but the things that really stung were appearance based. On the list was just don’t fancy her - could be weight (I’m a size 12 so I’d say bang average - my bmi is lower than his), could be fried hair, possibly strange postire… you get the picture. what also hurt was “head not in it, not sure she’s got any depth”. I tried to be open and was often met with walls. It also said “not sure I’m proud of her”

the list was on the torn out date from mid dating last year, when things were bad and before we broke up.

now, my issue is what do I do? I shouldn’t have picked up the notebook and read the list. It’s clearly a journal/diary from the cover. I didn’t realise this until I saw the page, and couldn’t stop reading at that point.

but also, what to think? If this was a year ago I would be gone, but things have been amazing since the break up. Everything I could have asked for - he lives an hour away and makes a lot of effort, compliments me etc. even comparing it to a year ago I had no idea the problem was that he didn’t fancy me - there was never an indication of that.

I’ve accidentally done something bad, and been hurt, but I don’t want to throw away the relationship now as it’s been so good. But also: is this an indication of how he truly feels? Could it have been written in turbulent emotional times and his views have changed?

please be gentle - I’ve been mulling this for days!

He just doesn't have a kind heart OP...why tether your life to that?

Bodies change, illnesses happen...this person is judgey and unkind. You deserve better

He sounds like he was weighing up whether you could be a trophy for him ...is he terribly attractive (on the outside, as I know the answer for his character)

hes attractive to me yes, I wouldn’t have kept dating him if he wasn’t (irony).

he has spoken to me in the past about a lot of insecurities specifically around weight / being overweight from his upbringing which I also think has been a factor

Sounds like this is my ex. Also autistic. Had a pros and cons list about me like it was a totally normal thing to do.

Black and white thinking. You’ll never be “right enough” OP. These “cons” will crop back up and he will end it.

Does anyone remember that early 2000's rom-com with Jennifer Anniston "He's Just Not That Into You?" It was about how women basically fall over themselves to find complex psychological explanations for men behaving like they don't give a shit about them, and encouraging friends or acquaintances to do the same, when really they're acting like they don't give a shit because they just don't. It's not that they're "in a bad place emotionally" or "rejecting you because they're scared you're going to break up" or "they feel like they don't deserve you". They just don't like you all that much. In this case, there's not even any behaviour to de-code, he's literally written it in plain English and left it somewhere easy to find! He doesn't think OP is attractive enough for him and he thinks she's got no depth. It's horrible, but it is what it is.

I actually love that film & I hate Rom-Coms generally, it's based on a SATC episode but I'm sure you knew that

some posters could do well to give it a watch

Honestly I do get this and that was why I broke up with him the first time. When we got back together he was kind, attentive, put in a tonne of effort, communicative etc

Honestly, this time last year he wasn’t sure if he fancied you, he thought you were too heavy, he didn’t like your hair, your posture, your approach to money and thought you had no depth…there’s no chance that’s changed in just 12 months.

But more than that, as others have said, what sort of person not only writes that down but then keeps it? I honestly couldn’t get past this - I would always think those were his true thoughts.

MNLurker1345 · 06/08/2026 17:00

He is entitled to his private thoughts and feelings. @Devondigspigs these things he wrote were genuine considerations of his. When read by you, obviously not nice, because they are about you.

We all have negative feelings about our partners/DHs flaws, none of us are perfect. I don’t like the way my husband is a mouth breather rather than a nose breather. I don’t like that he isn’t as good looking as he was when I met him 20 years ago. I don’t like that he doesn’t have as much depth as I do, but I do love him dearly.

Now if I wrote those feelings down and he found them, he would be quite upset, I guess.
But he wouldn’t leave me because of it.

It’s a hard one. Go with how you genuinely feel about your relationship. But I would probe him a bit, ask him if he likes your hair. Have that conversation with him about intellect and finances. I wouldn’t be able to resist it.

I couldn't get past this. How horrible to write a list like that, slagging off your girlfriend. No, I'd tell him not to bother moving - it's over.

I'm amazed at all the posters who apparently haven't ever thought about the pros and cons of their partners.

I've written down countless pros and cons lists about countless people and situations. Obviously not for them to see, but making a list is not twatty in itself.

Poppingby · 06/08/2026 17:01

Lots of autistic people have alexithymia meaning that identifying emotions and physical sensations is not as easy as for NT people.

That might explain the list; it also means this sort of thing might crop up again if you stick around. Worth knowing about.

Would you have felt those things in the early days though? I think it's really concerning that he felt this in what should be the lovely part of loving each other, the very early days ...before other things crowd in and change and challenge us

HollyhocksandPeons · 06/08/2026 17:04

This is what Cosmopolitan taught us, in pre-Internet days, to do about boys - write lists with for and against.

No point thinking that couple-formation is not like trying to get the best bargain for oneself. Even if people don't do lists on paper, please be assured they do lists in their head - good looks - tick, has a job - tick, bought a flat on his/her own - tick. It is very, very transactional, even if people don't admit it.

However you have one point there, which would be a deal-breaker for me - that he does not fancy you. This is not good at all. I would just leave him, I think.

QuintadosMalvados · 06/08/2026 17:11

He sounds weird as hell to me.
Get rid.
What man makes list of pros and cons like this about a girlfriend? Is he 12? Joke.

Yes I understand men can have obsessive interests but this guy is screaming 'weirdo'.

Get rid of the twat. Pronto.

Even if you think I'm exaggerating, which is your right, this will eat away at you so get out now.
You won't though (sigh).
All the best.

sorry, the autism wasn’t meant as a drip feed - probably daftly didn’t think it was that relevant here (if anyone else can shed any light on why it is let me know!)

again, I’m not worried about bringing it up - it’s more that I already know what reassurance he will give, but I don’t know if that’s enough

The damage is done now. You can't unsee what you have seen. He had every right to make that list and keep it private (I know you know this) but tbh I doubt there is a human being on this planet who could have resisted reading a torn-out page written by their partner listing their pros and cons. So don't be too harsh on yourself over that.

You owe him honesty. You need to tell him you read it. You say he is ASD, so you need to be very clear about three things 1. you know you did wrong, and you're sorry, 2. how you now feel (not how he has made you feel) 3. what you need from him.

If you find you are unable to get past this, then he deserves to know why you're ending things.

FWIW, I think it as possible for people to fall gradually into love as gradually out of love. What we think about person now isn't necessarily how we'll think about them a year from now. I wouldn't put too much weight on how he used to feel about you; that's in the past, and maybe you should leave it there. What matters is how you feel abut each other right now.

But they did split up! Got back together and are now in the lovely part.

Did he write the list before they split or after.

With the depth thing, this was something I did have to consider from the beginning. But I was able to reconcile with it, because we have really good communication.

And so @Devondigspigs, is he worth it? Is this major faux pas of his counterbalanced by really good redeeming qualities. Does he actually have the depth that you need?

Why would you always think that secretly he didn't like you, just because of a note he wrote to himself a year ago, when he's showing you every day that he likes you very much and wants to be with you? That really sounds like a 'you' problem - like you don't believe in yourself.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/08/2026 17:18

I would have to confront him but with an open mind that you were in a bad place in the relationship at the time but ‘just don’t fancy her’ I’m not sure what I would do with that

QuintadosMalvados · 06/08/2026 17:20

Has he been diagnosed as autistic?
Even if he has, it's not your job to educate him. Or explain stuff to him...
Or mother him...

Whatswrongherethen · 06/08/2026 17:23

OP... You won't get over this. You will not be able to forget. You know what you need to do.

Honestly @Devondigspigs your angst is palpable & I swear I understand it, in a different way years ago I was faced with being told "I just don't fancy you anymore" & it really killed me & like an idiot we rumbled on for another couple of years & I was on edge ALL THE TIME! Making sure I was always "perfect" my hair, my weight, never "nagging" & being the typical Cool GF.. I'd hate for anyone to go through that

I'm not trying to hurt your feelings in anything I've said x 💐

it was literally the night of me ending things that he wrote the list.

as an aside but it’s interesting because I look extremely similar to the exes I am aware of - both physically and in vibe.

OP posts:
ScholesPanda · 06/08/2026 17:35

I think you should write your own list with only one item 'type of arsehole who keeps a cons list about his partner'

Then leave and find someone better. You can do better, I promise.

QuintadosMalvados · 06/08/2026 17:38

I have dated a man with diagnosed autism. Clever guy intellectually but a bit clueless about life.
I was in no doubt that he liked me from the start.
He was indeed obsessive about lists and things, he was also extremely untidy and if he'd made a list outlining my pros and cons, I'm sure I'd have seen it during my 'I can't stand this mess tidy-ups.' of his flat.

Yes I know that not all autistic men are the same. I'm just sharing this so that you don't use his autism as an excuse.

If a man likes you, he'll know pretty much immediately - autistic or not.

To be honest, sweet as he was, I couldn't cope in the end with his ways though I remain fond of him.

Devondigspigs · 06/08/2026 17:38

Also to add on the depth and other points - we discussed things relating to depth specificicalg and meaningful conversations etc since we got back together. I had to explain that I probably wasn’t going to be an open book with someone constantly in and out and obviously as trust has been rebuilt that has not been a problem.

its honestly just the fancying thing that feels unresolved
