Well it depends. I’ve had some amazing advice on here in the past but also some awful absolute vitriol. You then speak to someone IRL about the same situation and they completely understand your perspective, yet MN would have you believe you’re an absolute nutcase. AIBU can be filled with bitter pack mentality.

GPT is ok at some practical advice but it’s obviously a bit of a sycophant. You need to know how to prompt it properly otherwise it will just tell you what it thinks you want to hear.

God no, 90% of advice on MN is hideous- unemphatic, unknowledgeable and unevidenced. It’s not good at all!

I would ALWAYS rather take a concensus of opinion from MN to filter out my options from than ask a computer which is basically just regurgitating word salad according to what sites it has scraped its learning from.

I find in some situations there can be a complete lack of empathy (of even worse) on MN, whereas if you are just trying to neutrally process something or weigh up options ChatGPT can be better. You do need to know how to prompt it properly though (or build a project if more complex).

So ironically, if you want empathy, take the anonymous humans out of the loop. Real life humans seem to be better though.

I‘m not sure what you want in response to this counterpoint- you can ask chat gpt for anything- it links to the evidence for any answer which you can then review for accuracy.

if you want more evidence you simply ask chat gpt to provide it. Unlikely mumsnetters, it doesn’t refuse

Different parts of MN would get different answers for me.

If you asked about relationships I’d say that part of MN gives better (if blunt) advice than CGPT.

AIBU is very brutal and I’m sure some people just post to be contrary on here.

Step Parenting, again I wouldn’t go there for advice, it’s full of bitter adult step children with an axe to grind.

Something like Litter tray, I’d expect the advice to be what’s best for my cat. Not for me. As it should be. Not sure where ChatGPT would land there!

I use ChatGPT a fair amount to help with my mental health, with the approval of my GP and my therapist. I wouldn’t use it or mumsnet for actual medical or financial advise etc, I’d go to someone in real life for proper advice.
Im not asking ChatGPT for actual advice, more as a sounding board for how I’m feeling. I like the way it remembers everything we’ve talked about, and links it to how I’m feeling that day. I find it so useful.

I see what you mean- mumsnet I often see 'ask Google' which is almost like asking CHAT GPT!

But part of this is if you ask Chat Gpt do you believe the 'evidence' - it is a bot Internet scraping?

if I wanted divorce, housing, legal, tax etc advice it’s chat gpt everytime. MN like most forums is full of clueless people happy to throw in advice on things they don’t have a clue about.

if I wanted relationship or parenting or any emotional advice, I find Mumsnet to be simplistic and lacking emotional maturity (LTB/ Throw your kid out/stop making them food/ stop doing your bad habit/ just tell him to stop being an arsehole) which Chat GPt is not. Chat gpt might not be as good as my mum or best friend at this, but it’s much better than MN.

God if I was having a wobble about a situation I wouldn’t come here. Yes some of the advice is very fair but you’d have to wade through some utter crap.

Sad to say that ChatGPT often gives some very good advice and can be very perceptive.

a couple of times I’ve asked things and it’s said “you’re asking about X, but given you’ve previously said Y, I suspect you’re actual issue is Z”….and it’s been completely correct.

The thing about it MN is that if you speak to someone in real life, they get a vibe from you about how truthful you are being, what your character is like etc, and just pick up on a whole load of social cues that just is not possible online.

Online, people only have a snippet of your situation, they don’t know if you are a reliable narrator, and sometimes the advice / comments is completely off the wall because they are coming at the issue from their perspective and life circumstances without realising that the OP’s circumstances are completely different.

And as previously stated, it can be a mob mentality which you don’t get on chatCpt. There are also biases and prejudices at play which aren’t there on chatgpt.

I am wary of AI and nervous of how much it is being used, and hate the thought of it being used to replace human interactions. But there is no denying that it is an incredibly clever tool and can give some very good advice.

Okay but do you think that AI does not already involve Mumsnet? Literally when you post something AI is suggesting a title. This is all online so AI will be incorporating it.

I think this is interesting as the AI aspect will also be aware of what you want to hear. I do agree it is a good summary sometimes but it will also incorporate incorrect information in Internet trawling so it is not in unbiased

I sometimes think the advice given on MN is so bad that i think they are deliberately trying to ruin a strangers life for fun

Sure AI includes mn and I guess many other platforms. Then takes a best guess from the inhuman amount of human data it has analyzed. It's mimicking a human voice without being actually human.
I'd rather be abused / comforted / advised by a human, however flawed that human is, every single day of the week.
I'm too old for this brave new world.
