AIBU to think Mumsnet gives better advice than ChatGPT?

Is Mumsnet better than CHAT GPT for advice?
AIBU- Mumsnet is full of genuine advice
AINBU- CHAT GPT is great and/or is on Mumsnet anyway

Mumsnet and ChatGPT represent two different types of advice systems rather than direct competitors.

Mumsnet’s greatest strength is real human experience: users often reply from personal situations they have lived through, providing practical knowledge, emotional understanding, and social context that AI cannot genuinely replicate.

For issues such as parenting, relationships, family disputes, school problems, or everyday life decisions, hearing from hundreds of people who have faced similar situations can be extremely valuable.

The disadvantages are that advice quality varies widely, personal experiences can become over-generalised, discussions can become emotionally driven, and popular opinions are not always accurate. Online communities can also develop groupthink, where certain viewpoints become dominant and alternative perspectives receive less attention.

ChatGPT’s advantage is its ability to provide structured analysis, broad knowledge, and a neutral perspective. It can organise complicated problems, compare options, explain concepts, identify risks, and help users think through decisions without the social pressure that sometimes exists in online forums.

It is particularly strong for research, planning, writing, technical questions, and analysing situations from multiple angles.

However, it lacks genuine lived experience, can occasionally produce incorrect information, and may not understand local social realities or personal circumstances as well as a community of real people.

The most effective approach is not choosing one over the other but combining them. Mumsnet is strongest for answering “Has anyone been through this and what happened?”, while ChatGPT is strongest for “How should I analyse and approach this problem?”.

Human communities provide experience, emotional connection, and cultural understanding; AI provides organisation, reasoning, and information synthesis. Used together, they offer a more complete form of advice than either system alone.

But to me this is a perfect example of the low quality of Mumsnet discourse.

“Oh but look I’ve linked a news story that says chat gpt made up a legal case!” “Ok how does that impact me using it?” “Well x” “no it doesn’t” “well Y” “no it doesn’t” “ok well I don’t like it anyway for other reasons”

erm ok… so why were we talking about making up some case law?

Yes it is also about..how much water every search uses.. even this one rl

Thank god someone's finally said this. I'm fed up seeing this line trotted out everytime AI comes up and it's always a clue that the user doesn't really understand AI but is happy to slate it

Also, if your chatgpt keeps telling you what you want to hear, then you clearly don't know how to prompt it.

the other thing people seem to forget is that we used data centres long before ai,

If you genuinely think that, you're not using ChatGPT properly...

I’ve started to really like ChatGPT for advice on practical things - holiday planning, for example.

If find I use it too if I don’t want to talk to people I know about something bothering me - health issues for example. And I have had ongoing knee issues which some people I know just keep saying diet and losing weight but ChatGPT has given advice about linking various things together which is more helpful.

Same here. I had an issue last week, the response from.chatgpt was spot on and daft as it sounds, it really reassured me.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 03:48

Why would I want to get advice from anyone here? Like, have you seen some of the posts? I’m not even talking about AIBU, that’s the obvious place for aggression and nastiness, but it’s on tons of other posts here.

Chat GPT all the way. I don’t even care about the water particularly, I care about peoples mental health much more.

Okay fair enough regarding the individual searches perhaps. Still the data storage, etc does have a significant impact

Mumsnet really isn’t as important as you think it is. Of all the chat forums all over the world it’s no more likely to be quoting mumsnet than it is the “zimmum network” or similar

Noted, I take your point! But it still adds to tje machine I guess

To get back to the water question, ChatGPT itself says estimates a single prompt uses around 25 ml. But that no one knows for sure except OpenAI

It also tells us that Mumsnet uses water but far less as it is less computationally intensive

I think AIBU to have use 50 ml of water to get those 'facts' 😂

ChatGPT is never good for anything apart from scraping internet for recipes, to save me time, or imagery for designing.

Real life, human problems which involve emotions etc are not the place for ChatGPT.

Same goes for SM including MN, a lot of the time, but I'd go here before rushing off to AI which is false and trained by these sites, anyway.

I'd love AI to die a death.

ponyprincess · Yesterday 20:08

@winecharm yes there is the feeling of real people here, rather than summarising

and id love mumsnet to have lots of detailed analysis, better comments and no vipers

Doubtanny · Yesterday 23:45

Great question. Real shit sandwich vs giant douche dilemma.

On the one hand chatgpt is so unrelated and will tell you fucking anything, on the other MN can be giving ridiculous and heaving with thickos

RedTreeLeaf · Today 00:44

araiwa · 06/08/2026 10:40

I sometimes think the advice given on MN is so bad that i think they are deliberately trying to ruin a strangers life for fun

Edited

Agree. It’s been awful here for years. Lots of MNers completely lack empathy.

Chatgpt is so much better. I used to use MN a lot for advice or perspectives to help with decision making, but asking AI is a much better experience, so now I don’t have to.

Good point- chat gpt is maybe more gentle, mumsnet is a bit more tough love?

Yes but it’s not really ‘love’, just a lot of nastiness a lot of the time.

ChatGPT for me.

Argument for why mumset is better: check the thread about the DH wearing the same pj's for 7 days. No way will ChatGPT make you laugh like that! : )

Also so much loving support on an autism thread from posters with lived experience.

That's so nice! It definitely seems like some topics are kinder than others. A balance of traffic versus advice from people with actual lived experience often

Could you link to this one @ponyprincess? I can't find it.

Well, I use Claude mostly and while I do like MN, it’s not going to sort out my spreadsheets, organise my finances, devise a B2 level French speaking syllabus for me, offer dispassionate advice about family problems or dilemmas, just to take a few examples. So no, I come here for entertainment, good leads on clothes brands, chat about frugal living, sometimes the LOLs, take the temperature on the occasional item in the news, but problem solving? Probably not.
