AIBU to worry 100F in Zante will ruin our holiday?

Help.
Really worrying.
Suffer terribly with lifelong anxiety which can spiral.
On Friday we're going for holiday in Zante.
This is my first holiday in 20 years.
Taking my 3 teenagers who have never been on holiday.
Really want to be excited but I am petrified about the weather temperature. The met office is saying 100 degrees Fahrenheit when we are there.
When we booked, the travel agent lady said it would be late 80s Fahrenheit.
We will have pool and beach but lots of people are telling me the temperature is going to ruin my holiday as it's a heatwave in Zante.
I'm so upset. I expected heat, but not 100 degrees Fahrenheit every day 😣
Has anyone been there in such heat who could advise? DC are so excited and I am a ball of anxiety about the temperature and can't share their excitement.

I was born in the 70s and I remember the weather forecasts in the 1980s used to have the temps on the map in both scales.

I’m always a bit puzzled as to why people who don’t like heat go to southern Europe in July and August.

May and September/October are great times to go to the Med.

I def remember the weather people tagging in “and that would be x degrees Fahrenheit” in the 80s/90s

unless American, I’m curious as to who would quote temps in F these days…

Greece often has temperatures in the high 30s to 40s in August. I don't know why people aren't aware of this. You will be absolutely fine as it's not as humid as the UK. At least your kids are older and not little- go and enjoy yourselves in the pool/ the sea and drink plenty of bottled water.

You are not the only one by any means, but I just can’t imagine writing this kind of response to somebody who opens their post by saying that they have lifelong anxiety and are spiralling. This is her first holiday for 20 years and she has never been abroad with her kids. What is the need for such mockery from you and others? Why not just give reassurance or not say anything? Do you behave like this to people in real life?

And what a fuss about Fahrenheit being used. I am not good with this conversion so I quickly googled it when I read the OP. But so much performative ‘confusion’ over it on here.

Many people don' t have a choice of when to go. I was a teacher so I went away in August to Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt. I expected it to be hot and it was. Most people with children also stick to school holidays.

Temperatures in the high 30s (or 100F) are pretty normal in Greece in August and it will be absolutely fine. Everywhere you go will have shade, you’ll have access to pools, sea etc and you will be completely fine. It’s just hot Mediterranean weather. Also, just because it’s hot doesn’t mean there won’t be a sea breeze etc.

Honestly, it’s really not normal to be ‘so upset’ and ‘spiralling’ because the weather on your (Mediterranean, summer!) holiday is going to be slightly hotter than you expected, so I’m assuming anxiety is something you experience a lot. Think of all the other times you’ve been very anxious about something fairly ordinary and it’s then turned out to be absolutely fine. I’m sure there will be examples - I certainly have plenty of my own from when I was struggling with anxiety, and about which I now think ‘God, why on Earth was I so worried?!’ and I now tell myself ‘Ok, you were stressed about that thing and it was fine, so this thing will also be fine.’

You can sightsee, shop, markets in hot weather, just ensure you have water, shade and stop for breaks. I get bored on a sunbed or by the sea all the time.

You don't have a choice when to go, you have a choice where to go.

It’s fine, get yourself in a pool or sea when you feel hot and be sensible with sightseeing.

You booked for Greece in August and now you're worrying about the heat - I will be honest - what did you expect??

You're now spiralling and will be spoiling it for your children, worrying about the heat? In August, in Greece?

I was there last week too. The kids found it quite hard to deal with but lots of drink stops helped.

There are also half terms in May and October, and a two week Easter break in spring. We did most of our travelling in those holidays when our DCs were little. Was usually cheaper than August too.

Take anti uv clothing and umbrellas, tons of sunscreen. Check uv forecast on each day and you'll be fine.

You’ll all be fine. Lots of suncream and books to read in the shade while going in and out the pool. Don’t plan any walking excursions and make use of air con!

I wouldn’t enjoy it, but I wouldn’t have enjoyed it at the expected temperature either. I think if you were expecting to have 32°c temperatures, it makes sense that it’s likely to be a bit warmer or a bit cooler than that. Presumably if 32° was going to be OK for you, you are someone who copes pretty well with heat. Have you got aircon in your accommodation? I think that’s rhe key thing.

(ps I’ve taken the relative temperatures of 32° and 37° from another person’s post. I haven’t heard people talking in terms of Fahrenheit since the 1980s.

Just looked back at your post OP and seen that you haven’t been abroad in 20 years so imagine you are not as much in the habit of awareness of summer temperatures in southern Europe as other people maybe.

I hope you manage to enjoy it, even if you are all less active than expected.

Next time you are planning a holiday to similar destination, the late May half term is a good time for nice weather but not overpowering, and in many cases October and Easter are fine too. I always keep the summer months for UK breaks.

Indeed and I chose to go to those places as do many others and I enjoyed it.

I did that a few times but it was difficult as a teacher as I had school work to fit in as well, particularly May half term when I was writing reports. I didn't like rushing off as soon as term ended and arriving back the day before school started. Too many things to do.

Fair enough @CaptainMyCaptain, not as easy for teachers. That’s a downside for the profession to only really be able to travel in August. Two weeks at Easter could be useful but maybe that’s peak exam prep time.

No @LemonSnail, I obviously glossed over that in Captain’s post and was just thinking about people travelling with children. I do know a lot of teachers (I was one very briefly a couple of decades ago) and some travel in the half terms but I guess it’s not possible/desirable for everyone.

That’s a different matter all together.
If OP didn’t want Hot, hot, she could’ve booked somewhere else. Like northern France, Scandinavia etc etc. Greece is always going to be scorchio
