AIBU to worry 100F in Zante will ruin our holiday?

Help.
Really worrying.
Suffer terribly with lifelong anxiety which can spiral.
On Friday we're going for holiday in Zante.
This is my first holiday in 20 years.
Taking my 3 teenagers who have never been on holiday.
Really want to be excited but I am petrified about the weather temperature. The met office is saying 100 degrees Fahrenheit when we are there.
When we booked, the travel agent lady said it would be late 80s Fahrenheit.
We will have pool and beach but lots of people are telling me the temperature is going to ruin my holiday as it's a heatwave in Zante.
I'm so upset. I expected heat, but not 100 degrees Fahrenheit every day 😣
Has anyone been there in such heat who could advise? DC are so excited and I am a ball of anxiety about the temperature and can't share their excitement.

This thread is fascinating in terms of the changeover from thinking in one temperature system to another.

Do all of those scoffing at temps in Fahrenheit not have a mental map of at/above/below body temperature in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, then? I'm a child of the 60s (not 1950s, to whichever poster suggested that) and "a temperature over 100!" meant you were worried about your feverish kid and they might even get a day off school. Fractions of a degree in Celsius aren't as impressive, somehow.

It’s usually mid 30’s in august. Go out first thing in the morning when it cooler, retreat to your room or a shady spot in the afternoon then go out 6pm onwards. There’s a reason the Spanish have siestas

I am a child of the 50s and have always used ºC.

It was this hot in southern Italy two years ago when I went. This was not a beach/pool holiday but a holiday filled with 30k step days, I survived and it was actually really enjoyable.

Ive been in Greece in 1987 when there was a heatwave, June in Turkey in 2008 was over 40 every day and 2022 i think in France at 45 degrees.
Hot weather in Europe is not a new concept. The France trip was the worst as in a campervan but the same 'rules ' apply.
Take it easy. Keep hydrated. Lots of time in the sea or pool (rivers in France). Chill out. No rushing about. Any little bits of sightseeing do really early or late. Have a siesta.

Late June to mid to late September is basically the absolute hottest time to visit Greece, or most of Europe altogether. Something I personally avoid.

The only thing that will ruin your holiday is your attitude. Adjust your daily plans to make the most of the opportunity of being somewhere new in that temp and have a great time!

Interesting! I definitely remember news reports of the weather being "in the 80s" or (very rarely) "in the 90s!" with exclamation marks. Our thermometers always had both scales.

The UK adopted centigrade in 1962.
To still be using it is even stranger than booking an August holiday in Greece then worrying it's going to be hot.
Hat, shade, water (in it and drinking it).

I'm a child of the 80s / 90s and remember Fahrenheit being used a lot. At school our playscheme would list the temperature on a chalk board every day, I remember when it was over 80 it meant it was hot!

We went 2 years ago. It's best to forget sightseeing and just do nothing

I remember 70s is warmish, 80s hot and 90s super hot!

and yes in people, temp over 100 isn’t good!

It won’t be as humid there and you should get a sea breeze which will help. Go on boat trips, swim in the sea! It will be lovely.

I used Centigrade at school and continued. I didn't have a TV in the 1970s so probably missed that.

My little brother once memorably had a temperature of 104. We were impressed (and you could practically see the steam rising off him).

It will be fine! I’m just back from Majorca and it was 35c which was fine but the killer was the humidity at 80% and a dew point of 25

I did the moring at the pool with an Brolly. Got up 7am to get a lounger and stayed it was so nice!!

take plenty of suncream as the biggest ruiner is sunburn

lots of water, take a thermal bottle, a fan os handy. Hat.

i Wore a rash vest when snorkelling to avoid back burn.

We go to Greece the last two weeks of August most years. Agree with others that the heat is definitely easier to cope with there. It is a drier heat and not as humid.

We like a beach holiday so no sightseeing involved. A typical day is go to beach/pool early. Sunbathe until around 11.30/12.00, retreat under the brolly to read, snooze etc, lunch and then back under brolley until about 3.30 when we emerge for more sunbathing until DH is ready for a sundowner which is usually about 6pm. Plenty of sunscreen (minimum spf30), hats, keep well hydrated and frequent cooling dips in the sea or pool. We've had some really high temperatures whilst we've been there but it is usually around 37/38 degrees which is very hot but lovely when you're there. We love having dinner late with loads of people out enjoying the evening warmth.

I'm in my 40s and have never used Fahrenheit and no one in the UK uses it now. Most importantly neither does the Met Office as the OP is claiming.

I've only just stopped converting Fahrenheit, so I can see what the 'real' temperature is. It's what I grew up with. It's what my relatives in the US use, it's what was still being displayed across Africa in the 2000s. I'm 59, if this site is to be believed and having children in your early 40s isn't an issue, then I could have teens. You could Google the shit out of most 'dilemmas' on here.

If you go on weather sites, you can change the settings, so perhaps the OP has her settings on Fahrenheit. I have to do it from KG to stones/pounds.
Times have indeed changed. I wouldn't have dreamt of pulling up the older people around me for working in shillings etc.

So I hate the heat, feel ill in it and would feel really anxious about it too. However, I assume you have air con, swimming pools and are on the coast?? I promise these will all transform your experience. Plus (if you’re in the uk) it’ll be loads less humid on your holiday hopefully. I honestly think the humidity in the uk is as bad as the temperature on hot days. It’s usually not any where near as bad on a fresh coastline, even if it is hotter.

Op i think the issue is your anxiety, not the weather. I get it, feeling anxious is awful and there can be a tendency to spiral and catastrophise. Try to stop yourself thinking about it if you can, if you feel a worrying thought, spin it - oh my god it’s going to be hot becomes oh my god our first holiday in 20 years it’s going to be brilliant! It’s hard but positive thoughts really do help. Push out the negatives.

my close relative was a serial catastrophiser. She hated travelling, flying, so many things that made the fun stuff in life so fun. It stopped her doing so much over the years. Whilst discussing menopause symptoms with the doc (she’s on HRT) her lifelong anxiety was discussed. She is now on a low dose of Sertraline and it has revolutionised her life. She says she feels like she is actually living for the first time ever. Is it worth having a chat with the gp after you get back? She’s been told she can stay on it basically forever, so this is the new and permanent her.

Would it be overly pedantic (but I guess in the spirit of the thread) to point out even using Centigrade is wrong/old fashioned..
