AIBU to think refusing treatment from non-white medical professionals should have consequences?

There has apparently been a significant rise in racism towards NHS staff, with a growing number of people refusing to allow non-white NHS staff to treat them. This is sad but not surprising given the shift in society as a whole towards people expressing their racism much more openly.

https://news.sky.com/story/nhs-staff-experiencing-unconscionable-levels-of-racist-abuse-survey-finds-13569575

I have always admired the commitment of NHS staff who treat all patients with care and compassion, even when those patients are rude and abusive. But if people are actually refusing to let certain staff provide treatment, surely there should be consequences for this?

AIBU to think that everyone has the right to refuse treatment if they so wish, but if a patient refuses treatment from a medical professional simply because they don't like the colour of that medical practitioner's skin, then they should then forfeit the right to receive that treatment on the NHS. So they can either go without or find the money to be treated privately by a medical professional of their choice?

There would need to be signs warning people of the consequences of their choices, of course, but if someone doesn't want a Black or Asian radiographer carry out their x-ray, then fine... they just don't get an x-ray.

At my last few hospital appointments I’ve been seen to you by foreign professionals. I could not honestly tell you whether I think they were good or efficient at the job because their accents were incredibly thick I struggled to understand and communicate with them effectively. I also felt that when I asked questions, they danced around topics as opposed to giving me direct answers. It made a very stressful time quite frustrating and if I had a choice, I would always opt for somebody that can communicate clearly in English as opposed to caring where the actual people come from.

Does it apply to those who have thick regional accents? Like from Yorkshire, Liverpool, scotland or Northern Ireland?

friedaklein · 04/08/2026 21:21

Fair enough to question the OP. If only people did it like @NoMullet rather than shouting ' Am I racist for requesting an HCP I can understand? Am I?"
No. Sit down.

I'm a British Indian with tons of family and friends who are doctors working in this country. Most of them were born and brought up here. Many of them have been racially abused by patients, including the ones with British accents who did all their medical education and training here. Reading this thread makes me feel sick to my stomach. It's a lovely reminder that no matter how long we have been here, no matter how assimilated we are into British culture, no matter what my family and I have contributed to this country, there are so many of you who still think we don't belong here. And the funniest thing is, most of you to whom that applies try to deny it, but scratch the surface and it's right there.

im really sorry @burblish

Ive often been gobsmacked by some of the comments I’ve heard, often prefaced with ‘I’m not racist but….’
So I’m not surprised about your and your family members experiences.

And yes often, you just have to scratch the surface a bit to see the racism seeping through.

That is a ridiculous question. People with strong, thick, regional BRITISH accents, still have a good grasp of the English language, and they can still understand a British person and what they are saying.

And most British HCPs, especially surgeons, consultants, and specialists will NOT have thick regional accents. What's more, the vast majority of British people can understand most British regional accents.

Not even remotely comparable to someone who cannot speak English properly or understand it.

People are pointing out why this simplistic idea that the op came up with isn’t a good one. That’s the premise of the thread. It’s not just about the undoubted wrongness of racism.

The situations people are coming up with, from what I've read, do nothing to explain the rise in racism towards NHS staff and are very specific situations that need careful management and specialist support. The vast majority of people being racist do not fall in to a special exceptions category and I don't think refusing them treatment is completely beyond the pale tbh

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2026 21:35

I don’t think anyone should be refused treatment simply for asking without expressing any racist language to see a different HCP than the one there. If there isn’t one available their options should be clearly explained to them. You can’t just take all treatment away. Mental capacity isn’t always clear cut. It’s up to managers to deal with difficult patients. That’s why I think these blanket statements lack nuance and are unworkable.

You might be surprised to know I agree.
But they will have to go to the bottom of the list. In my GP practice there are no white GPs, so they would simply not accomodate such a request.

Look my comment was from my own experience.
Ive had people with strong thick regional accent I struggle to understand. Nothing to do with the ability. to speak the language.
My FIL had a strong Yorshire accent and sometimes struggled to be understood by some of the consultants (yes incl white doctors)

On the other side, you seem to assume non British doctors don’t steak English or can’t understand it which has never been my experience 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
Thats ofc wo going into the fact that many of those non white doctors are British born and bred. Or have been living in the U.K. for 20+ years etc….,

Yes and I get that.

Just a reminder. To refuse to allow anybody at all to touch you for any reason without being grilled, shamed or abused - is still a human right, unless you are a criminal. We already live in a rape culture, and those seeking medical care are already subject to many abuses.

Obviously, we don't need to make matters even worse by denying people the human right of refusal of care. And no, we don't let people die like dogs so communist leaning radicals and activists like the OP can feel a sense of satisfaction.

OP would like to reduce those seeking medical treatment to the same level as criminals and would gleefully strip you of your human rights, so she can virtue signal.

That's not going to happen.

Ooooh, it hurts when the empire is criticised, huh?

😂I don't recall anyone mentioning 'the empire'. It really is best to not be so overdramatic and making up nonsense in your head.

I think you are revealing yourself to be a communist-leaning, activist radical like the OP as only a communist leaning radical would make the statement you just made.

Let me refresh your memory as to what I actually said:

"Obviously, we don't need to make matters even worse by denying people the human right of refusal of care. And no, we don't let people die like dogs so communist leaning radicals and activists like the OP can feel a sense of satisfaction."

If you want people to die like dogs - as the OP definitely does - because you think you have the right to force them to accept care from whomever you and the state mandate as suitable, then you are a communist-leaning activist radical.

Fortunately, you're not in charge. HTH.

If they were raped by someone with red hair, why not? Do you only have empathy when it comes to race and not with victims of SA being triggered?

Most survivors of SA unfortunately do have to get on with their lives and, IME most will tell you that they choose not to let the actions of the perpetrator/s define of dictate the rest of their lives.

Yes, there may be an example here and there of a survivor - male or female - who is triggered, but that can be managed in an individual basis and is entirely different from some knobhead saying they only want white HCPs, or racially abusing the staff there to treat them.

It’s fucking embarrassing that a woman of your age is blathering on about niche scenarios to avoid having to admit that racism might actually be a problem.

BIossomtoes · 04/08/2026 22:31

Wow @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack, it seems you’re communist-leaning, activist radical. I bet that’s as much of a surprise to you as it is to me. 😂

Do you genuinely think there are doctors working in the NHS who neither speak nor understand English?

Funnily enough, I’ve not struggled with many of those except for a very thick Dundee accent (which happened to be my own grandmothers)

Itsalittlebitwarm · 04/08/2026 22:47

For someone to blatantly refuse treatment visually immediately because of race is of course unacceptable.

For someone to have experienced difficulties with understanding language pronunciation, a none educated NHS trained bedside manner while going through chemotherapy and told they had a few months to live, fact, goodbye, is very different.

We trust our medical care, no matter what ethnicity and don't question the expertise, even in cases like this.

I'm sure anyone would agree that when in a terrifying situation like stage 4 terminal cancer it would be nice to be trained in how to support the patient.

This is a personal experience, a Nigerian male oncologist, seemed like a nuisance to be there, abrupt. He suddenly moved on (nothing to do with me, no complaint though should have).

Next oncologist was lovely, reassuring, oh we can help you for years. Yes an older English man, a gentleman, easily understood and the humour that goes with coming from the same country. You don't realise how positive this os to be able to have a joke.

This was one bad experience and it doesn't mar my opinion of being treated by any background, all staff have been wonderful. It's a shame this one man did make be me feel scared and wary of having another African doctor to dismiss the treatment protocols.

And there we have it, folks.

This is what the left think of anyone who disagrees with them. They will have you die like a dog in the street for having different opinions and call you racist at every single opportunity, regardless of the reality, if you refuse to comply to the state mandated doctrine.
