Do you have a best friend?

frankiedays · 03/08/2026 22:24

do you have a proper best friend as an adult? Or a proper group of best friends?
I hear people talk about their best friends all the time and I’m so jealous I don’t have that one person to properly connect with as a friend.

Nope. I get exactly what you are saying.

Temporaryname158 · 03/08/2026 22:26

No, neither do I. I really wish I did.

I only had 1 as teen, I miss it

FilthyforFirth · 03/08/2026 22:27

Yes, met at uni, she is godmother to my son, was maid of honour etc etc. We dont live in the same place so not in each others pockets best friend, nor do we talk everyday. But yes she is family, I could call her at 2am.

It is hard to make friends as adults though, so much of close friendship is shared previous experiences that naturally occur less as we age.

Sorry you dont have this in your life. Are there any close friendships you can nurture?

Couldnotificared · 03/08/2026 22:27

Yes I have two best friends who I have known for many years plus I have about 7-8 close friends. None of them know each other but kind of know of each other. It’s great,no cliques etc and it also means I go out regularly for coffee, cake, lunches etc

cannibalfish · 03/08/2026 22:29

Yes- he’s a man, a decade older than me, different worlds completely but it works. An unlikely (best) friendship if there ever was one.

We have other friends too, we all met as mature students and stayed close but he is my very best friend.

MrSchubertWhiskers · 03/08/2026 22:29

I did have, but the friendship became increasingly one sided so I came to the painful conclusion it was time to move on. I'm lucky enough to have a group of close friends but I do miss the friendship I once had.

Goldenboysmum · 03/08/2026 22:29

Yes! Been friends for 51 years.

We've been through so much together, marriages, divorces, bereavements, children, holidays

But god the memories we have of when we were young, im so glad there was no social media 😅

Would be lost without her to be honest, she's more than my best friend she's the sister I never had and I love her to bits 💓

jenny38 · 03/08/2026 22:33

Yes, my best friend of 28 years. She's like family, I can tell her anything snd vice versa. I always feel better for seeing her. I appreciate her more the older we get. We are lucky.

PizzaPowder · 03/08/2026 22:34

I’m lucky enough to have the same best friend that I’ve had since we were 12.

TidyDancer · 03/08/2026 22:35

Yes I have one very best friend, been close since primary school. I also have two others who I met through my old job that I would consider close enough to be best friends. Beyond that I have a bunch of close friends, mostly through old jobs too. I am extremely lucky to have them all as I’m actually something of an introvert most of the time.

Imaginary86 · 03/08/2026 22:36

No

Ihatemondays1962 · 03/08/2026 22:37

Yes i do, two that i met in the first year of high school and one that I met about 25 years ago through a mutual hobby.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 03/08/2026 22:38

Yes, known her 27 years. We've had our disagreements but she's a fabulous woman and I love her very dearly.

Pixiedust49 · 03/08/2026 22:38

No. I’ve had good friends come and go over the years but I’m not the best at keeping in touch. I don’t crave it I’m happy in my own company.

Nimblethimble · 03/08/2026 22:39

Yes. I was completing the Age Concern Life booklet today (where you put all the details that could help others if you die such as who to contact) and I had a number of very good friends listed.

They are a wonderful group from many different stages of my life; school, jobs, DCs.

sweetchill · 03/08/2026 22:43

I have a few different best friends from different times in my life, with different degrees of contact. One in particular I’m in touch with every few days.

Im sorry that you don’t have this. Is this thread really going to help how you feel? I take it you have joined groups or done things to try and form friendships? Invested in existing relationships?

whippersnapper55 · 03/08/2026 22:45

Yes, we've been friends since we were 13 and we're 55 now. Been through thick and thin together. I have other close friends but she's my ride or die friend - she's the one I could call at 3am and she'd jump in the car no questions asked (as I would do for her)

I don't know how unusual it is to have a best friend all your adult life but I feel very lucky. I hope we'll be old ladies together!

JMSA · 03/08/2026 22:45

Not really :(

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/08/2026 22:48

No I used to but she went weird in Covid and got very nasty towards me and I had no choice but to stop talking to her. We were friends for almost 40 years as well and until the last few years (she was starting to be horrible before Covid) we were like sisters and no one made me laugh like her.

NotRightNowPlease · 03/08/2026 22:49

I'm lucky enough to have 2, one I've known since 6 and we facetime most days, 37 years later. Another that I've known since I was 9, we talk sporadically but know we're there if needed.

It's not the be all and end all though, I have lots of new friendships too. I'm sure you also do xx

JustGiveMeReason · 03/08/2026 22:54

I really dislike the term "best friend" as it implies, by default that other friends are somehow 'less' in some way.

I do have a few really good friends from different parts of my life, and, as a pp said, with different degrees of contact.

Depending on how you define 'best friend', I have friends that I met when we started secondary school (so 50 odd years ago), and a couple of friends I still see who I have known from an even younger age. But none of them are people I see really often. I have a friend that I see about twice a week, but we only met 4 years ago. Then several from somewhere in between. I wouldn't rank any of them as being 'better' than the others though. They are all good friends that I love dearly and would miss terribly if anything happened to them.

Enigma54 · 03/08/2026 22:57

No. She ditched me when I was diagnosed with my second incurable cancer.

leadsalone · 03/08/2026 22:59

Yes. We’ve been best friends for 40 years too - ever since we met at school. I have a small handful of other close friends but my best friend is like my sister. We don’t see each other very often as we lived miles apart but we’re in touch a couple of times a week usually.

SparklyBrickViper · 03/08/2026 23:03

Nope.

I would probably say I have more acquaintances than friends now as well.

Silverbirchleaf · 03/08/2026 23:05

No, sadly.
