DH just made me a dinner that he knows I don’t like

Looking for a bit of perspective on this DH has just made me dinner after I came in from work, he does very little cooking so I’m very grateful of that.

He told me he was doing fish cakes and salad, just sat down and started eating and I said are they salmon fish cakes, he said yea, I said to him I don’t like salmon, you know I don’t, we’ve been together 20 years and I just don’t like it.
He said to me well you had it the other week, I didn’t, it was sea bass at a restaurant and he had the same thing!
It just feels like he doesn’t think and all I do is think of the family, I feel exhausted with it and it’s probably colouring my view of the situation but AIBU to feel a bit out out?

Maybe he was just being a bit selfish...wanting salmon himself. I wouldn't make a big deal of it but just make sure he makes something you both enjoy next time.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 04/08/2026 18:19

You shouldn’t feel grateful that he’s cooked for you, especially as he cooked something you dislike.

LLM21 · 04/08/2026 18:28

I honestly think they just dont take any notice WHATSOEVER!! After 18 years mine will still come back with a treat for me... a cake filled with caramel and a strawberry milkshake on the side, 2 things I hate but he loves funnily enough 😆 they are just a bit daft !

My husband hates fish . He can eat it in breadcrumbs but that’s it. He hates the smell, we once went into a pub when we were away that had a beautiful beer garden and was right on the coast - and he loves a pint - but he walked straight back out because they served fish and he could smell it. We have been married for 10 years .

For some reason I still sometimes think he loves the fish you get in butter sauce and I feel like I have a memory of him going through a stage when this is all he would eat . No matter what he says , and I know he knows better than me, I can’t shake this memory- I had an ex who liked it so I am sure I am getting mixed up but there are still times when I consider getting him this for dinner and he reminds me that his hatred of fish is common knowledge.

Order yourself something really nice on Deliveroo .

hopefully next time he’ll remember your preferences.

Fish is fish. Eat what he made.

What?

Go further back I have a theory your bra is an ex dinner lady circa 70s.

Blueuggboots · 04/08/2026 19:02

@Pistachiocakebut she didn’t have them at a restaurant? She had sea bass.

Haven’t you worked out in 20 yrs that men don’t think! They are clinically unable to do so! But on another story, I made my ex a meat pie with cat food (he had seriously pi**ed me off) but he said it was great! But yes he should have known but I don’t particularly like salmon and my hubby of 21 yrs still asks me if I want some when he goes shopping! You should of fed the fish cakes to the dog/cat?

MyLimeGuide · 04/08/2026 19:26

I aggree with you that salmon is yuk yuk yukkers

No they are not, some are considerate and some are dicks.

That’s such an odd thing to say… there are enormous differences…tuna and salmon, cod….all very very different

To be fair, once a tiny portion has been mushed up into a frozen fishcake, they probably all do taste similar.
There’ll be barely a spoonful in each one.

FlatCatYellowMat · 04/08/2026 19:56

I sometimes cook dinner that I know my youngest won't eat, because I'm blowed if we're only going to eat the stuff he eats (rarely I make him cook his own if it's not something that's differentiable. Otherwise he has the bits of what I'm cooking that he will eat)

If I was just cooking for me and him though, it would be pretty stupid to cook us something that he doesn't eat. At that point I've just cooked for me. If that's what's agreed, then fine, but I don't get to say "I've cooked us both dinner" if I've intentionally cooked something only I eat.

Ah well, I’m an adult who owns my own home and makes my own decisions about what I eat, and don’t just eat what my mum tells me.

As an adult who lives at home with my family I eat what they make. There are things I might dislike the taste of but I can stomach it because I'm getting a warm healthy meal and I'm greatful.

Almonds are good for your health as well.

FIoorboard · 04/08/2026 20:06

Stop cooking for him. Looks like hes capable of cooking hims3lf

FIoorboard · 04/08/2026 20:08

SouthLondonMum22 · 04/08/2026 01:04

Sounds like he needs to cook more often until he can get it right.

Probably weaponised incompetence

Well that’s brilliant for you, I guess. When I lived with my parents I mainly ate what I was given too, although they wouldn’t have deliberately cooked something I don’t like.
But now I own a home, pay half the mortgage, half the bills and half the food costs. I have no reason to eat things I don’t like, so I don’t. My husband doesn’t cook things I don’t like, and I don’t cook things he doesn’t like. There are enough things we all like that we have no reason to cook things someone doesn’t like.
The OP is upset because her partner has proved that he hasn’t listened to her over the years and has no idea about her preferences.

It's just a salmon fish cake. It's delicious with chips.

I love all the salmon dishes my dad make.

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 04/08/2026 06:11

It’s not about whether they’re edible and healthy to eat.

Op does not like salmon. This really isn’t a hard concept to grasp.

But OP is a grown up, and can presumably manage to eat "not her favourite food", that someone else has cooked for her with good grace. It's no biggie. Most people over the age of 6 realise that they'll like some meals more than others, but they just eat the good healthy food put in front of them, that someone else has prepared. OP presumably doesn't live in a restaurant, so you eat what you're served (medical reasons excepted), and don't expect to be able to "order" what you want.

Again, fab for you. You like salmon fish cakes. The OP doesn’t. I don’t know what else to say 🤷🏻‍♀️, apart from I’m glad you like your dad’s cooking.

Edited

She didn’t say it’s ‘not her favourite’ though. She said she actively dislikes it. We had Thai green curry tonight. Not my favourite food in the world, but I’m fine to eat it.
I actively dislike prawns. I won’t eat them, because I really dislike them. If my husband cooked them for me (he wouldn’t, because he knows I don’t like them) then I wouldn’t eat them, because I really dislike them. That’s different to them not being ‘my favourite’.

I cooked my dh sausages once, knowing he doesn’t like them, but he’d really pissed me off and deserved them. He knew he’d been unreasonable and ate them without complaint 😆

Have you done some thing to get on his nerves that could’ve prompted salmon related passive aggression?

I love that he took his punishment with grace 😂

YourBra · 04/08/2026 20:24

Prawns are delicious my dad makes the best prawns. So spicy and full of flavour. Honestly a lot of you should just give over.

Honestly if you don’t know by now that different people like different things, there’s probably not much else to say.
I’m glad your dad makes you delicious prawns.
