To not feed my children?

They're 13 and 15. I work FT (largely from home) and do all housework and dog walking around that.

The past few weeks I've been getting them lunch when I break for mine but now they're getting up later and later. They've been up for an hour now and just hanging about in PJs.

I am not making them food - there is a full fridge / cupboards etc with stuff they like but they will just wait for me to crack and make them something. Am going to try and ride it out but all my maternal instincts are heading for the pannini press.

Surely most teens can do a sandwich?????

@DoggieNamechange this weekend give them a cooking lesson!!

Sandwiches. Supernoodles. Omelette. Pasta and sauce. Egg fried rice. Eggy bread.

Anything else easy that doesn't make much mess.

Eggs are high protein and relatively cheap.

Cornishclio · 03/08/2026 15:52

YANBU. If they can lie in bed most of the day they can summon up the energy to make a sandwich.

theneighboureatmysalad · 03/08/2026 15:53

Why don't people ever communicate and are so complicated?

Can't you just ask them what they want to make themselves for lunch before you go food shopping and let them get on with it?

And if there's something they don't know how to do, or where things are, show them.

It sounds very childish to suddenly decide you don't like that they were up late and you sound like you are punishing them.

whippersnapper55 · 03/08/2026 15:54

Of course they can make their own lunch! My youngest was making family meals before he was a teenager! Leave them to it.

Sartre · 03/08/2026 15:54

Lazy gits, my DC have made their own lunch from about 7/8. I would not be making my teens lunch unless it was a big pot of something they could have some of.

Thatpastalife · 03/08/2026 14:53

Yes they should be able to make themselves a sandwich but why wouldn’t you make them something while you sort yourself out?

Because they are 13 and 15! More than old enough to make their own. I was making my own food from far younger than that.

I know what they like for lunch and have it all in the kitchen. Ham, eggs, cheese, cucumber, sweetcorn, bagels, pitta bread, you name it.

Not sure I was being childish, it's just the first day they've got up after I've made lunch so was curious as to their movements!!

We do communicate! I've told them to clean their f**king rooms at least once a day this week 😁

YABU that you haven't already taught your children to make sandwiches by 13/15.

QueenOfDragon · 03/08/2026 16:02

When my 8 year old surfaces at 5am on the dot - he serves us coffee and warm croissants with melted butter in bed.

Around noon he prepares a light luncheon of omelette, Greek salad and a soufflé for pudding (his specialty).

I can put my feet up as DS also loves to cook the evening meal, usually bacon and black olive risotto.

DS has been cooking since he was 2.

My 12yo has been making pasta (sauce from scratch), homemade bread and lots of cake these holidays already as well as sandwiches. Of course yours are old enough to do some basic meals.

WerewolfOfLoudon · 03/08/2026 16:03

Block their devices on the WiFi until the rooms are cleaned. They will soon get up before 2pm.

britnay · 03/08/2026 16:03

My kids have been making their own breakfast and lunch since before they started primary school.

I ate at 1230 and they got up at 2ish

Can you just triple up on what you have and leave in in the fridge. If not they know where the bread is

Just tell them to get their own lunch in future and you will cook them an evening meal...If I was making a sandwich for myself one day and they were sitting there watching me I might ask if they wanted one then but not if I had eaten at 12:30 and they got up at 2:30

Hahahahhaha - indeed!

Is it only bacon and not pancetta? You need to teach him the difference. My DCs are total pedants on continental meats, have been since they were 18 months.

In that case, they missed lunch. If they are hungry they can help themselves to toast or a sandwich and I would cook tea at the normal time.

I'm not running a restaurant and don't drop everything to produce food for people that chose to have a lie in. They will survive.

MaryIngallsRibbons · 03/08/2026 16:10

My kids are 12 & 14. They’ve been making their own breakfast and lunch for years.

florenceandthemac · 03/08/2026 16:10

YANBU. I leave my 12 year old DS to sort himself (I do check he is eating and what he's eating)
I also get him to make my lunch usually, if he's in. He's free and I am working full time, then running him round to clubs etc on an evening. It's the least he can do 🙃

blankcanvas3 · 03/08/2026 16:11

I stupidly never made my DS do anything for himself, then when he turned 16 I realised he genuinely wouldn’t know how to make a sandwich if I asked him to. After that I taught him to cook and do laundry - he’s fairly self sufficient now he’s 17! If he wants what I’m having for lunch I’ll make it for him, but if he wants something else he does his own. I wish I’d started far earlier tbh as it was very embarrassing realising how useless he was

Secretseverywhere · 03/08/2026 16:11

I don’t feed my dc during the day 11-15. They can sleep in and have cereal / toast for breakfast or make eggs. There’s a fruit bowl that takes a regular hammering. Make a sandwich for lunch or there’s always something that can be chucked in air fryer/ microwave.

I do feed them a proper dinner.

MrsKeats · 03/08/2026 16:12

I can’t fathom children not getting up till 2pm.

Pssedoffathis · 03/08/2026 16:14

Just say lunch is at 12.30 if you want to eat together, we can make it together. Otherwise it’s get it yourself.

nevernotmaybe · 03/08/2026 16:18

LilacPuffin · 03/08/2026 15:19

You had to "instruct" your 13-year-old in the fine art of making a sandwich? 😅

Everyone over the age of 7 in my house prepares their own breakfast and lunch.

Let kids be kids not a big thing in your household!

It's not like it is needed at that age. In extremely poor working class households, the kind where you woild be out working the day you turned 16, strictly rationing food and providing set meals cooked was very normal. So this isnt some important learning you are doing at that age. A 7 year old could make porridge, but it would be stupidity to take that risk to let them, so presumably it is just crap like cereal?

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2026 16:18

Do not crack. Most teenagers can cook full meals, its just getting them off their arses to bother. My 14 year old does a lovely stroganoff if bodily dragged from the bowels of YouTube.
