To not feed my children?

They're 13 and 15. I work FT (largely from home) and do all housework and dog walking around that.

The past few weeks I've been getting them lunch when I break for mine but now they're getting up later and later. They've been up for an hour now and just hanging about in PJs.

I am not making them food - there is a full fridge / cupboards etc with stuff they like but they will just wait for me to crack and make them something. Am going to try and ride it out but all my maternal instincts are heading for the pannini press.

Surely most teens can do a sandwich?????

If they got up at 2pm they missed breakfast as well as lunch. Anyone can shovel some cereal I to a bowl and add milk.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 03/08/2026 17:16

I don’t always feed my 9 and 11 year olds and often will ask them to sort out their little brother. They are perfectly capable and it’s good to be independent.

AnaColombiana · 03/08/2026 17:18

The only meal I ever make my kids is our evening meal! Haven't sorted their breakfast or lunch since they were about 8 and 10, maybe younger.

Theresalittlebitofwitchinyou · 03/08/2026 17:19

My 11 year old can and <sometimes> does cook pasta bakes, stroganoff, rice dishes, mash etc. She also knows how to do veggies sausages, halloumi etc for wraps or beans and crumpets. She usually hopes I forget this while feeding her father whose default setting is cremation and nobody can stand the smell so he’s banned.

Daisymail · 03/08/2026 17:26

Surely at their ages they can make their own lunch, and yours too. Time to set some boundaries!

DurinsBane · 03/08/2026 17:39

Peonies12 · 03/08/2026 15:17

of course they should be making their own meals, they should each be doing a dinner one day a week, plus their fair share of cleaning, laundry, washing up etc. and walking the dog! You work FT and they are on holidays! Sorry but they sound very spoilt. And a 15 year old should be working in the holidays.

Have you seen a 15 year trying to get a job recently? Vast majority of places want people to be a minimum of 16, a lot aren’t taking on people younger than 18 now

rainbowstardrops · 03/08/2026 15:18

Why is your 13 year old not getting up until 2ish? What time did they go to bed?!
But yeah, they’ve missed lunch so they’re on their own!

Quite standard for a teen isn’t it?

TickingKey46 · 03/08/2026 17:41

I feel your pain!. I also work from home 3 x a week. I do make the kids lunch (on my lunch break). But after I have cooked them tea. All devices are turned off for an hour and they are given a list of house jobs to do!
I refuse to work full time, and do all the house hold jobs!

FIoorboard · 03/08/2026 17:41

Pot Noodles are everyone's friend here
Or egg on toast
Or toastie
Give them lots of choices and et them crack on

Rhaidimiddim · 03/08/2026 17:42

Do they know they are allowed to feed themselves? Have you told them that you expect them to make their own lunches?

Possibly? My two have always come down before lunchtime, especially when they’ve woken up earlier but just done their own thing in their bedrooms.

Block their devices on the WiFi until the rooms are cleaned. They will soon get up before 2pm.

We do this regularly with the 16yo. Hit them where it hurts the most - WiFi.

Onetimeusername1 · 03/08/2026 17:48

I think it's time things changed around here... Tell them it's midday surfacing and they can make you lunch!

Not in this house. I have 4dc and none get to lie in beyond 10am. It mucks up their eating schedule.

Gosh that’s sad.

I always like the thought of them getting the rest they need, after the strains of term time.

Teens naturally sleep later than others. They need it. Sleeping til, say, 11 for a teen is quite normal and will help their physical and cognitive health.

AgnesMcDoo · 03/08/2026 17:53

Mine are expected to sort their own breakfast and lunch.

DH and I both from cultural backgrounds where a parent (usually the mum!) would make a full cooked meal every lunchtime so I think I will need to make a definite effort to let the DC fend for themselves a bit more as they get older.

DS1 (10) can make scrambled eggs on toast and will make himself some if he wants them for breakfast on a weekday...as I am busy making packed lunches/getting myself dressed and only have time to hand out toast or cereal.

You’re working.

They should get up to a list of chores they need to do that day and they should be making the family meal at least one evening a week each.

That! You're working, they are doing nothing. Expecting teenagers to contribute is really not the same as sending them up the chimney.

amraa · 03/08/2026 17:54

How are ur kids waking up so late? Mine no matter how late they get to bed , they will still wake up at 6-7am!! This is why I don’t let them stay up late much as it makes no difference to their sleep. The latest they’ve ever slept in is 9am on the very rare occasions.
as for making their own lunch, I usually make it for them but I’ve already had my crash outs as I feel like I’m in the kitchen all day! I’m making breakfast lunch and dinner! Some days I tell them help urself to breakfast, other days I end up giving lunch n missing out breakfast. They’re so lazy, won’t eat until it’s infront of their face. honestly they’ll actually starve instead of helping themselves

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/08/2026 17:55

Adding to my previous post - making them go to bed at a certain time - whether it’s 11, midnight, whatever, I get. My younger one I will still force to bed as he needs his sleep.

Waking them up, unless you’re off out someone everyone has agreed to, I don’t get.

Awful parenting to teenagers.

TheBlueKoala · 03/08/2026 17:56

Have kids the same age as you @DoggieNamechange . I make their sandwiches with vegetables on the side that I put in the refrigerator. It takes me max 10 minutes in the morning but atleast I know they will eat. Boys so lazy fuckers - if I don't make anything they will happily graze on crisps all day and since that stresses me out I mainly prepare for them in order to feel good myself.

How old are your kids? Mine were up very early as well but now at 13 and 16 they are tired. Even if they go to bed at 11 pm they will not be up before 10 am.

No, boys are not lazy fuckers. YOUR boys are lazy fuckers.
