To just want it to be autumn now?

I hate the depths of winter (January and February) with a passion, but my god I am craving those lovely September days where it’s not so hot you feel sweaty by 8am, and you're able to walk around without feeling disgusting.

I want soups and stews and pies back on the menu instead of pasta and salads, I want a piping hot bowl of leek and potato soup with a crusty bit of bread, a steak and ale pie with a helping of buttery mash, a roast dinner.

I’m sick of wearing dresses and sandals, I have a Birkenstock tan line ffs. I want to get into bed and feel cosy, not just have a sheet over the top of me. I’m craving a cosy autumn afternoon, a nice walk through orange woods and coming back to a lovely bowl of stew with a helping of crusty bread, tucked under a blanket reading a book.

I’m just bloody sick of summer!

Yes, I want my lovely jumpers feeling cosy darker nights and cool evenings. I am sick of this heat. However it has been nice to not have to deal with the constant deluge of rain for a while. I wish we had proper seasons instead of just rain interspersed with more rain and possibly a heatwave.

cravingcrispmornings · 02/08/2026 17:01

I’m begging for it! Sadly the forecasts have been very much wrong lately. At the height of the heatwave the apps would say 26, when it was actually 35. Only corrected after the fact.

Well hopefully for you they’re not wrong this time! I can see a swing from Tuesday/Wednesday and forecasts are usually reliable a couple of days out. A week or more out and it’s a guessing game seemingly.

Smallestshadow · 02/08/2026 17:04

Early September is sometimes warmer than August if it’s been a drab month

Livpool · 02/08/2026 17:05

No, I hate autumn and winter. I am loving the sunshine and hot weather.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/08/2026 17:05

I try to enjoy each season as it comes.

We could do with a bit of rain though.

I like autumn to start on 1 Sept and not to think about it too much before then 😄

You're being weirdly judgemental. Daily high of 26 doesn't mean it's only 18-19 by 8am, it's been very humid in many areas, and it's just possible that OP may be exaggerating to make her point. There's also the fact that it may be 18-19 outside but many houses hold onto the heat so it would be hotter inside the house.

She’s really got the bit between her teeth for some reason!

Haha, I just can’t let wild exaggerations go unchallenged! Two months of relentless, unbearable heat and sweating by 8am? Behave 😉

Fledgedup · 02/08/2026 17:13

I've just had some delicious home-made soup. Maybe cos it's cloudy. It's 21 degrees here. And I did eat it wearing shorts 🤣
Tomorrow we're due 25 degrees and thats too hot for me.

I mean, I agree. You can try keeping a 1 year old and 3 year old entertained, happy and sun safe for two months if you like! It has been relentless

Millions of people manage it in countries that have summers like this every year.

ApplePieCinamon · 02/08/2026 17:17

Yanbu I’ve never hated summer as much as I did this year. Miserable and frustrating feeling this hot and irritable all day. Hate taking a walk, hell is going to the playground, hell is just being outdoors , just want it to be September already.

Let's not start that silly old comparing hot in England to hot in other countries, please I can't bear it it's been done to death

I grew up in one of those countries but they are equipped for the heat. Here it’s just extreme with no relief in your own home.

emeraldsapphirepearl · 02/08/2026 17:18

I’m totally over the summer. I want the children back at school / preschool and some structure to the week. As well as darker evenings!

Nope long may the summer continue.

This so much!

OP is in luck. Much of the South-West is cold and rainy next week. As cold as 10 degrees at night in places - I’d get that duvet out!

It was 8 degrees at 5am when I was in work this week in South Wales. The temperature has dropped a lot here this past week.

PurpleCoo · 02/08/2026 17:23

No, I definitely don't want to wish the sunshine away, but I do wish it would rain. Ideally on a day I am working 🤣

I am enjoying wafting around in little shorts/skorts and vests, my tan looks great (I do use SPF), and it's so nice to spend all day and evening in the garden (I have shade). I am quite happy to live in my Birkenstocks (I have 3 pairs in different styles so don't get the Birkenstock tan lines experienced by a PP).

I have a wool duvet which regulates your temperature so I can sleep with my normal duvet at night.

I have adjusted to walking the dog before work. It's easy enough to fit in 5 miles before starting. Then I can just chill when I finish work and don't have to go out, or go for an outside swim if I choose.

I have no desire to eat stodge and happy to have salads and wraps for lunch instead of cold weather soups. Smoothies for breakfast instead of porridge. Stir fries, ramen, noodles etc for dinner.

The 30+ temps seem to have dropped to about once a week, anything below 30 most of us have probably acclimatised to now and it's just a case of staying out of the sun in the afternoon (for most of us)

Of course, I appreciate those with illnesses and disabilities or the elderly or infants might still feel discomfort in the high 20s heat, so won't feel the same way.

But me, I am easygoing and tend to take things in my stride and enjoy whatever we are experiencing in the moment. I enjoy the seasons and will enjoy autumn and winter when they come around, but I do prefer the weight to be tipped to more summer time and less ice/winter extreme cold time. Those short winter days where it's dark before you start work and dark when you finish are very long, and bit great if you have to walk for hours in it!

Just reading through the thread and that PP does seem a little obsessed 😅 MN can be such a weird place

Dragonscaledaisy · 02/08/2026 17:28

Definitely not. This summer has been glorious and there's a lot more to come. I don't do 'cosy'.

I’m enjoying the heat and the sunshine, the light evenings and the summer clothes. Just the thought of autumn makes me miserable.

Nobodyiswatching · 02/08/2026 17:34

Autumn is my power time. I come alive. I feel good, excited, everything is a bit mysterious and changeable. Summer makes me slightly flat. It has a depressive effect on me
