To just want it to be autumn now?

I hate the depths of winter (January and February) with a passion, but my god I am craving those lovely September days where it’s not so hot you feel sweaty by 8am, and you're able to walk around without feeling disgusting.

I want soups and stews and pies back on the menu instead of pasta and salads, I want a piping hot bowl of leek and potato soup with a crusty bit of bread, a steak and ale pie with a helping of buttery mash, a roast dinner.

I’m sick of wearing dresses and sandals, I have a Birkenstock tan line ffs. I want to get into bed and feel cosy, not just have a sheet over the top of me. I’m craving a cosy autumn afternoon, a nice walk through orange woods and coming back to a lovely bowl of stew with a helping of crusty bread, tucked under a blanket reading a book.

I’m just bloody sick of summer!

Sat here thinking, what relentless heat?! Certainly hasn’t been that here at all.

I was sitting out in the garden but I’ve come in because it’s gone really chilly.

hattie43 · 02/08/2026 15:39

I’m desperate for a real long downpour of rain . My garden is dying even the hedging . i am also desperate to walk my dogs again in normal hours . I
do love summer but the flies and drought I can do without . I also love autumn .

Morepositivemum · 02/08/2026 15:39

Love it- closing the curtains early, pjs, scarves but without hats, stews, Gilmore girls!!

Culpeper · 02/08/2026 15:40

I do prefer winter clothes and I’m always pleased to wear boots and jumpers come September.

But I am not going to complain about the glorious summer we’re having. We’ve had dinner outside for weeks on end now. Every single barbecue/party/gathering we’ve had has been outside and not ruined by shitty wet weather. It’s been fabulous so far and I’m not ready for it to end just yet.

I think it’s the fact it’s been unrelenting for the last two months here. I just want to wear something other than the same few dresses!

Whereabouts in the country are you? We’ve been keeping an eye on London weather as we’re spending time there on and off this summer from overseas, and it most certainly hasn’t been hot for 2 months? We’re back there next week and I can see that next weekend it’s rainy/cloudy with a high of 22 degrees celsius, which is positively COLD in my books.

I guess what do you count as unbearable heat? For me it’s 35+ degrees, not 22…

YABVVVU. It's Autumn in 4 weeks! 🙄

Whosthetabbynow · 02/08/2026 15:41

Same. I want to wear my coat and boots and light candles and put a nice throw on my sofa. I want to put the duvet back in the cover and not have it over me empty because of the heat. I don’t want to look out and have the sun in my eyes. I don’t want to have to see varicose veins and knobbly toenails in Tesco. I don’t want flies near my wheelie bin or have to keep throwing away the cat food. I want Saturday nights to be about Strictly; not the thump of a football and maniacal laughter. I’ve had enough now. It’s exhausting.

PersephoneParlormaid · 02/08/2026 15:43

Me too. I’d love a frosty morning and a bit of fog.

I know what you mean - my Dad lives in Italy and I would normally go and see him in August, but this year I don’t think I can bear the thought of the extreme heat there when it is already so hot here.

There is no access to a pool or the sea where my Dad is so it would be going out very early and/or very late and sheltering with the AC on during the long middle hours of the day.

Will you have access to the sea and a pool where you are going? That’s what I would currently love.

Yes but I have a pool and the sea at home! So it just feels so pointless

I’m in the south west. Our usual weather is 22-24. It’s been 26+ pretty much consistently

If you only go on holiday for heat it’s probably pointless anyway! There’s lots more t9 a trip away - bit of culture and history, lovely food from a different culture (that you haven’t shopped for, cooked or cleaned up after), time to read and relax…
YABVU. Winter is long and horrible. And it hasn’t been relentless heat. There have nbeen a couple of patches, but the rest has been in the low to mid 20s. Perfect. I hate winter clothes, especially having to wear socks and enclosed shoes. Summer clothes are just more comfortable. Autumn will come soon enough and I’ll slide into grumpy unhappiness.

FoxRedPuppy · 02/08/2026 15:48

I’m not running as much as I am never motivated to get up early and then it is too hot. Exercising in autumn/winter is so much easier.

I have no idea how anyone can be be motivated to get up at 6am for anything, and I’m a bit of a running addict!

Exercising in winter isn’t easier. It’s too bloody cold to leave the house for a start! And dark. Ugh.

I meant to say in my earlier post - we could do with some rain, for sure, for gardens, agriculture and to remove the risk of wild fires, but we don’t need autumn. Overnight rain and more of what we’ve got 8n the days would be ideal.

Yes, a proper downpour overnight would be perfect. We definitely don’t need autumn.

Crushed23 · 02/08/2026 16:05

I definitely wouldn’t consider 26 degrees unbearably hot and think it’s very unusual if one is sweaty by 8am in this kind of heat. Most people wouldn’t be. 36 degrees, yes. 26 degrees, no.

Each to their own. Down here it’s been awfully muggy, and the heat has been pretty incessant from the get go. 24 degrees used to be a very, very hot day down here. Now 26 is our minimum.

This coming week is supposed to be more traditional English summer- I’m being promised low to mid 20s and a clouds.

I never thought I’d say it but I’d be glad for some rain so I can stop carrying watering cans of water to the plants I put in this spring.

Crushed23 · 02/08/2026 16:09

But how can you be sweaty by 8am on days where the temperature reaches 26 degrees. That would suggest a morning temperature of high teens? If it’s menopause/hormone related, fair enough, but it’s not the norm to struggle when it’s 18-19 degrees out.

BIossomtoes · 02/08/2026 16:09

We went on holiday at the beginning of June and it was wet and cold for the entire fortnight. That’s my one and only complaint about eight weeks of beautiful weather - it should have come a little sooner!

Mornings have been coming out at 24/25 lately. I’m active - by 8am I’ve walked nearly 4,000 steps, all outdoors.

I can’t comment further as I’m not sure where you are exactly. Just searched my favourite spot in the South-West and it’s 17 degrees at 8am tomorrow.

Zanatdy · 02/08/2026 16:12

Live in the South East and in a flat at the moment. Moving to a house in the North West soon and it can’t come soon enough.

probablyamunreasonable · 02/08/2026 16:13

I like (early-mid) autumn too but I don’t want to wish the summer away. Once autumn is here, it’s here to stay and it only gets colder and darker.

September to beginning of November are ok but after the clocks go back it’s a real slog. Heating bills are expensive, it’s dark at 4pm, everyone’s catching winter bugs and I hate having to wear a coat everywhere. Christmas is a bit of joy in the darkness but after that I can’t wait for spring and feel so happy when the daffodils come out.

I live in London. It's been hot or very hot for weeks, I think it was about 34° on Wednesday, and over 30° on Friday. Tomorrow is forecast to be 30° where I am, 32° in central London.
