AIBU to be deeply concerned about the recent influx of 30k+ undocumented arrivals in Spain?

AIBU to feel really unsettled by the recent news coming out of Spain and Ceuta? Reports are showing that tens of thousands of undocumented migrants have crossed over in such a short window, completely overwhelming local infrastructure, reception centers, and security forces.

I know migration is always a sensitive and compassionate topic, but looking at these numbers practically, I don't see how any European border region can absorb 30,000 to 50,000 arrivals almost overnight without severe strain on public resources, local housing, and emergency services.

What worries me even more is the precedent it sets for the rest of Europe and the UK down the line. Surely there has to be a firm balance between humanitarian support and actual, enforceable border control?

Am I being completely unreasonable to view this as a serious policy and security crisis, or are others feeling equally concerned about where this leads?

Would love to hear honest thoughts on how this should actually be handled!

I think that there are wider strategies going on here.
There are the territorial ambitions that the Moroccan government has.

The Moroccan government released many prisoners the day before and drove them to the border.

They want to control the Strait of Gibraltar, as Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz. 30,000 do not arrive in one day by coincidence.

The Moroccan government are backed by Israel as Spain have stopped arms going to Israel through the Strait of Gibraltar, so they have a geopolitical ally.

Open borders has forced a crisis situation, if you are unwilling to defend your border with force, you will eventually be invaded.

Ahh, so it's the Jews doing it. Of course. Presumably part of their great replacement plan. Or is this a whole new antisemitic conspiracy theory? It's hard to keep up.

Another thread on this? really?

Getting desperate because Reform is down in the polls and Burham has had a good start?

Do you think they are swimming from Spain to the UK as well?

Give it a rest and stop reading the Daily Mail...

They dont need to swim from Spain to the UK. They can go overland to Calais, get on a dinghy and Bob's yer Uncle!!
Coached lined up waiting, free bed and board, and the freedom to spend their days doing what ever they please!

Metalmotha · 31/07/2026 15:50

No you’re not being unreasonable, anyone who thinks you are clearly has no idea about the whole topic. Around 50,000 -60,000 undocumented men arrive in one day in the Spanish enclave is clearly co- ordinated and I’m struggling to see it as anything other than an invasion with an attempt to overwhelm the Spanish authorities. This is after the Spanish Supreme Court denied the right of immediate return for the city back to Morocco.

We have neither the physical capacity, or tge resources to deal with this (glad we’re not part of the Schengen Agreement) many of these 50-60,000 will have their eye on Britain. We and Europe need to start a policy of immediate return for all people entering Europe without documentation.

Basically the numbers are equivalent to the entire population of Stafford turning up. People with no job, no means of supporting themselves, people who will be applying for relatives to join them so suddenly that 50,000 will be quarter of a million.

YABU because you don't live in Spain. We're not even in the EU now anyway so how would this affect you? Was it just seeing a large crowd of brown people that made you uneasy? Be honest.

Oh come on, this has nothing to do with race! 50,000 men forcing their way into another country is basically an invasion. The question is, why are you trying to justify 50,000 undocumented men forcing their way into Spain

callmej · 31/07/2026 15:54

Popstarrrrr · 31/07/2026 13:47

What's causing you to feel unsettled exactly? It doesn't really set a precedent for the rest of Europe given this is Spain occupying territory it failed to return to Morocco after independence. Colonisation tends to have longer term impacts as everyone is now realising.

You mean the Arab colonisation of Morocco? It was a long time ago, I'm not sure we can undo it now! They are finally starting to treat the indigenous population with some respect at least, all we can hope is that it continues - and that the Berbers can forgive them for so many centuries of oppression.

Or the Arab colonisation of Spain? I'm fairly sure that's been resolved now and the Spanish harbour no ill will. It's only Isis and the like trying to claim they are the rightful owners of the country, but then they also seem to think we're still fighting the crusades. They don't seem very up to date on geopolitics! I think the rest have the world have made peace with both the Arab invasion, and their expulsion.

Do you realise the geographical location of Ceuta? Some swimming, flying or sailing will be required.

They’re still on the African continent, half of them have gone back, at least 12 desperate people have drowned.
its a tragedy.

I don't disagree with the principle, @Metalmotha, but where should they be returned to, if the lack of ID means nobody can be sure where they actually came from originallly?

Many will arrive with a script about coming from some hellhole, which probably wouldn't take them back even if they did originate there , and then the "process" grinds into its endless life, meaning that the chances of actual removal can be small

@RodneyKitten Yes but the title of the thread is about them arriving in Spain - Ceuta is not in Spain - OP didn't mention that did they?

Edited

Ceuta is as much part of Spain as NI is part of the UK. It’s not a colony or dependency - it’s an autonomous community just like Catalonia or Andalusia are.

Namenamchange · 31/07/2026 16:16

I think a lot of the concerns are based around women being fearful and scared of men. As a cohort their predatory nature speaks for itself. Yes I know not all men are like that.

Well if they are claiming asylum then surely they have to disclose origins? We need to make it almost impossible to claim asylum. It’s hard for people who actually need it, yes, but it’s now the only way..the past 24 hours should remove from anyone’s minds that. We simply cannot allow the current asylum laws to continue.

You understand that Ceuta is part of Spain albeit in the North African coast? You understand the implications of the recent Spanish Supreme Court decision?

@Popstarrrrr ,

‘Colonisation tends to have longer term impacts as everyone is now realising’

That is such a deflection!

I’m assuming the people who swam/rafted to Ceuta had no interest in the colonisation of Ceuta, they wanted to get to the EU.

I am also assuming that they will apply for asylum. Otherwise why do the swim which is actually quite hazardous?

You would hardly swim there, say you were an economic migrant, and be forced to immediately turn around.

But...they wouldn't be swimming to Ceuta and therefore technically entering the EU if the enclave wasn't still annexed by Spain! So it's absolutely a consequence of colonisation! If it was just part of Morocco they wouldn't be heading there!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/07/2026 16:25

Well if they are claiming asylum then surely they have to disclose origins?

In theory yes, @Metalmotha, but their real origins and what they claim them to be can differ, and probably many hope to be part of a 100s of 1000s strong amnesty of the type Spain has recently (unwisely, IMO) granted

It’s now documented to be about 49,000 and it is absolute fuck up for the UK as they are in the majority going to come to our country because we give them such a free ride. I Stress I don’t mind genuine asylum seekers, but these are economic immigrants and we are fucked. We need to cease almost all foreign aid because our country is going to the toilet.

I don't understand why you want to stop foreign aid if you don't want this kind of migration? Foreign aid is aimed at improving life in developing countries, so reduces "illegal" migration.

So they coming over to what, rape European women? In countries with much harsher sentences for violence towards women than possibly their own countries?

icingonmycupcake · 31/07/2026 16:36

I hadn't realised that Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city in Northern Morocco and on the tip of the African continent. It's not on the Spanish mainland. So that's something I guess. Though horribly unpleasant for the people who live there. According to Spain's interior minister, 25,000 have already returned to wherever they came from.

What “free ride” do we give to “economic migrants”?

No, I don’t think that everything that happens is Israel’s fault but if you see this ‘invasion’ as a political act with an aim to achieve an objective of more control over the Straits of Gibraltar then I’m just pointing out that they are strategic ally’s. The Spanish government has been one of the most outspoken critics of Israel.
If Russia was the Moroccan Government’s main strategic ally I would point that out too.

Chat gpt:

The relationship between Morocco and Israel has transformed from transactional diplomacy into a robust, institutionalized hard-power security axis. Originally formalized via the 2020 Abraham Accords—brokered alongside the United States—the allyship operates under realpolitik, prioritizing deep defense, intelligence, and economic convergence.

Deepening Military & Intelligence Integration
The 2026 Military Action Plan: In January 2026, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the IDF signed a long-term Military Action Plan in Tel Aviv. This shifted cooperation from simple weapon sales to shared force development and joint strategic planning.

Advanced Defense Procurement: Israel has become Morocco's third-largest military supplier, providing hardware like Barak MX missile defense systems, two Ofek 13 satellites valued at $1 billion, and PULS rocket launchers.

Domestic Co-Production: The alliance includes technological transfers, creating joint production facilities inside Morocco to manufacture advanced uncrewed aerial vehicles (drones).

Operational Discretion: While the Moroccan public has protested actions in Gaza, the Rabat administration strategically separates political exposure from operational military co-operation.

The Strait of Gibraltar: Strategically, an alliance with Morocco yields immense geographic value regarding the world's primary maritime chokepoint.

Leverage Against Mutual Critics: This alignment heavily impacts European dynamics. As seen with the recent Ceuta migration crisis, Israel's vocal defense of Morocco's border pressures served to diplomatically punish Spain for its critical stances on Israel's military actions.
