AIBU to be deeply concerned about the recent influx of 30k+ undocumented arrivals in Spain?

AIBU to feel really unsettled by the recent news coming out of Spain and Ceuta? Reports are showing that tens of thousands of undocumented migrants have crossed over in such a short window, completely overwhelming local infrastructure, reception centers, and security forces.

I know migration is always a sensitive and compassionate topic, but looking at these numbers practically, I don't see how any European border region can absorb 30,000 to 50,000 arrivals almost overnight without severe strain on public resources, local housing, and emergency services.

What worries me even more is the precedent it sets for the rest of Europe and the UK down the line. Surely there has to be a firm balance between humanitarian support and actual, enforceable border control?

Am I being completely unreasonable to view this as a serious policy and security crisis, or are others feeling equally concerned about where this leads?

Would love to hear honest thoughts on how this should actually be handled!

And to escape climate change is the latest one to add to the script 🤣

I wonder how the Indian subcontinent handle the summer

The climate change is someone just making up excuses to justify them coming here in the boat loads. Genuine asylum seekers fair enough…. Making excuses for them coming due to climate change… nah! And I’m not even sure if the excuse can be used to claim asylum??

No its not one of the categories for refugee need.

So just leftist trope then. Thought so!

I wonder too. There are far more hotter countries that seem to deal well with it and have become acclimatised. It’s not that cool even in the UK in summer at times.

Nobody is going to say they are an economic migrant if they are claiming asylum as they will have zero chance of success. The reality is people have been migrating for economic reasons/to have a better life forever. Climate change has caused a reduction in quality of life for many in the global south. People living there may or may not recognise the cause but they certainly feel the effects.

You're wrong there, many do say they want a better quality of life. Obviously that gets denied. But people are upfront, they want better for their kids, quite a lot feel that Italy and France are hugely racist, they've had difficult experiences there, particularly if they're North African and see it easier to integrate into the UK

Most of course are fleeing childhood conscription and war and brutaility. Many however are also are fleeing legal action/criminal action from the authorities in their home countries.

British migrants don’t go to Spain illegally via a dinghy so there is absolutely NO comparison whatsoever!

And yes it is an “excuse”, even a pp who works with migrants has said above that they have never ever ever claimed asylum for “climate change”. And even if they do want to move here for climate change, if we keep our borders closed, they can’t! It’s that simple! Just stop with this batshittery and pathetic excuses to justify boat migrants coming to the Uk! It’s just made up trope by people like you!

Do we really want to get in to discussing British people going places legally/illegally? The impact of British colonialism is still felt today.

Anyway, you are either being disingenuous or you didn’t read what I said. I used British migrants as an example of why people are motivated to migrate. If you have money and privilege, you can do it legally. If you don’t, you generally don’t have that option so if you want to migrate for a better life, then your only option to do so is the illegal route. It’s up to the UK and other countries to determine how to deal with that.

And obviously people applying for asylum are not going to use climate change to support their claim as it’s not an accepted reason to get asylum.

Ummmm quite! Well they could always go to Antarctica or the North Pole then!

They could but why would they want to?

Flyingintotheunknown · 01/08/2026 17:09

BeanNaGealai · 01/08/2026 17:06

They could but why would they want to?

Haha and that’s exactly my point! It wouldn’t appeal to them! Ask yourself why they would want to come to the UK? Because the UK DOES appeal to them. It’s all about picking and choosing which country they want to go to isn’t it? Even if it means passing through multiple safe countries tries and risking their lives across the channel to get here. Not about claiming genuine asylum! Shot yourself in the foot there haven’t you lol. You have pretty much confirmed the point I was trying to make 🤣

Colonialism, privilege —— That completes my left wing BINGO for this thread, thanks @BeanNaGealai

errr in case you haven’t noticed, this thread is about ILLEGAL migrants breaking through the borders into a Spanish owned country! We aren’t talking about legal migrants are we! Lol

Oh here we go.

Everyone and their dog had an empire at some point of time.
The Aztecs, Byzantium, Rome, Ottomans, Portugal, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Russia and I’m sure I’m forgetting many more.

You can whinge about them all you want.

likelysuspect · 01/08/2026 17:14

Empires are how civilisations were built. The Mongol Empire was the most successful of all time, then kaput, just like that it disappeared. Its the way of the world and the way of humans.

Afghans are a proud nation that will talk fervently about how their country has never been conquered by anyone that tried. (this is sort of a myth, but they're very proud of it)

Other nations are proud of the way their resources and land and empire was built up.

RodneyKitten · 01/08/2026 17:14

I knew I did!

The Mongol Empire and Genghis Chan,
The Chinese, Alexander the Great.

Move on.

ShautyMels · 01/08/2026 17:17

I've been to a quite a few places in France and Italy. I loved it there. Both great countries with great culture.

ShautyMels · 01/08/2026 17:18

If I was "stuck in Italy or France" I wouldn't risk death across the channel to come to the UK

likelysuspect · 01/08/2026 17:21

People do tend to get fixated on the risk of death in the channel, it is dangerous, but often people have already travelled thousands of miles by then, across equally dangerous waters and terrain. Another short part of a dangerous journey doesnt stand out as anything particularly significant in that context.

How on earth have I shot myself in the foot? I have never said they should be granted asylum status. I said that they, like the British migrants in Spain, want to go where they have an opportunity for a better life. You seem to be trying to put words in my mouth. Maybe read what I've actually said instead of what you think I said.

When you're already in a country that's perfectly safe? I'm not gonna risk death from a place where I'm actually safe

Excuse me… but you’re the one who started arguing with me! You quoted me on a post I made to someone else about the batshittery of excuses the left use, the latest one to add to the script is climate change! And you quoted me to defend it!
I think you’re putting words into your own mouth love! And it’s not the UK’s problem if boat migrants want a “better life”.
Anyway I’m done with your batshit posts that make no sense. We aren’t talking talking about illegal immigration into the UK not legal migration and choosing which country to move to to live there and actually contribute to society.

bafta16 · 01/08/2026 17:26

If Britain hadn't colonised there would be no other people speaking English. Its a huge draw for people to come here.

Don't think that makes me a loony leftie, its a fact.

Im not sure people know that there is a risk of death, its just another crossing as far as they see it. The risk to them is much the same as its been throughout the rest of the journey.

Ramblingnamechanger · 01/08/2026 17:31

Over half these people have returned to Morocco. Ceuta is not in Schengen apparently.
