I want to tell daughter in law to stop posing on photos

I know I'm being unreasonable, I know it's harmless, I know it's none of my business.

But if I see another family holiday picture where its all best profile, drinky with pinky cocked over her straw sunglasses tilted look at my boobs again I'll scream.

Or I can vent here and you can all talk me down before I say something everyone will regret.

I mean just relax, play with the kids, have fun .

The fact I was rung on day one of the school holiday cause she couldn't deal with them might be colouring my attitude to all the time spent styling, posing and collating perfect pictures must be taking. But I'm old school and my kids weren't accessories.

I do feel better now, thank you for listening.

It’s not all of them, and it isn’t harmless.

I agree, what their children see, they will be as bad copying their mums

preggogreggo · 31/07/2026 11:02

This is a weird thread. What's her posing got to do with her asking you to look after your grandchildren for a bit? Id hate to think my mum/MIL were this irritated by me asking for help.

ExtraOnions · 31/07/2026 11:03

How could anyone be bothered with this … a photo you can skip past in a Nanosecond.

If she thinks she looks good, and is confident enough to pose like that good on her.

I like seeing my friends and family having a good time - cocktail in hand, if they use a bit of filtering, so what

Weeellokthen · 31/07/2026 10:16

Hows it a load of shite? All the younger ones in my work, live their lives like this. My dc, on the other hand, do not.

Because it's not all of them? My DC are certainly not like this.

I hate it almost as much as I hate people judging and sneering at other women who aren’t actually affecting them in any way

The OP venting on here isn’t affecting anybody in any way.

Yet here she is, being judged for being judgy.

Edited

She asked if she’s being unreasonable. My judgement of the situation is that yes she is. So yes I did judge, just as she’s asking us to.

Weeellokthen · 31/07/2026 10:56

Yeah, pretty much!! This is my personal experience, is that ok with you ?

Fine with me, I’m just amazed you know all the youth of the world, you must be a busy bee!

Hollyhobbi · 31/07/2026 11:06

Should it not be posing in or for photos?

gettingbacktobeingmeagain · 31/07/2026 11:11

This is why I am looking forward to the SM ban coming in...it'll hopefully help stop kids thinking this kind of behaviour is normal and that the likes they get mean nothing.

Me and DS were on a beach last week and he wanted to play with a kid his own age (primary) but all she wanted to do was pose "sexily" (yeuch) for photos to make it look like she was playing. It was really, really sad...but then her parents never stopped posing for selfies the entire time, literally everything they did on the beach was for the 'gram, so what other example did she have poor kid.

HeronWading · 31/07/2026 11:14

Just designate her an amiable cabbage who happens to be in your vicinity and breathe?

SillyGooseyGander · 31/07/2026 11:14

I do find the weird stock poses really odd. I think they maybe started out with influencers or celebrities, but now my hairdresser and dog walker and all my nieces are doing it and I see the same poses over and over. The mock-candid shot of them adjusting their hair/buttoning their cardi/sipping matcha through a straw, looking away from the camera. As if they've been captured without their knowledge in a natural moment of serene beauty, staring off at the horizon, one leg at a coquettish angle behind them.

It's largely harmless. But it is weird. I can't blame the OP for breaking the fourth wall for a second to exclaim "wtf is going on?" because I have moments of the same. Probably time to put down my phone and pick up a book.

pinkyredrose · 31/07/2026 11:14

Forget the pics they're not important. Just don't drop everything when she can't be arsed looking after her kids, she's the mother it's her job.

You are a very bad person and I think we could be best friends and absolutely never hold bitching sessions we'd lose our families over

JMSA · 31/07/2026 11:15

Loving the ‘not my DC’ comments. Typical Mumsnet!
Next it’ll be the ‘I get my nails painted once a year’ brigade 😅

SatsumaDog · 31/07/2026 11:17

YANBU to find it irritating, but it’s just a generational thing. I’m just glad I wasn’t born into the era of the selfie. I loathe having my photo taken.

Diamondsareforever72 · 31/07/2026 11:17

LondonLass2026 · 31/07/2026 10:24

I'm sorry, I have absolutely zero idea what this means -

drinky with pinky cocked over her straw sunglasses tilted look at my boobs

I do agree though. I hate posers. It only seemed to start when Facebook took off in the mid-2000s. No one did this stuff before that. People just used to smile. What a novelty!

The ones who kick one leg out behind them though, trying to look all coy, are the ones who really piss me off.

That pose drives me mad! 🤣🙌 it’s so pathetic.

Goldengirl123 · 31/07/2026 11:19

I have one like that!!! I absolutely cannot stand all the posing, the sticking the tongue out 🤢 and what is this new way of standing where they bend their knees and stick their bum out. I HATE it

Fortnightly · 31/07/2026 11:22

Suszieq · 31/07/2026 10:36

Bingo!

Mean girls don’t grow up, they just get older

I disagree. Maybe OP would just like to see one photo of DIL looking natural and normal for a change. Everything doesn’t have to be staged.

HotGrapefruit · 31/07/2026 11:25

I'd rather my kids posed for fun than were feeling shit about themselves because they thought they were fat and ugly, like I did for most of my life.

Unpick these things OP. What you've said is something incredibly minor. Why is it getting on your tits? There's something else going on!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 31/07/2026 11:26

Weeellokthen · 31/07/2026 10:00

😂np but you have to realise that this is the yung uns identity, these days. It's, all about "the gram', it's just what they have become.
A bit sad, harmless but sad 😄

Never mind 'the gram'.

I think it's just 'grim'!

This whole social media 'perfect lifestyle one-upmanship' thing is just horrible.

Bristolandlazy · 31/07/2026 11:29

cinquanta · 31/07/2026 10:41

I’m guessing there are a fair few photo posers responding to this thread.

Yes, telling OP what a bad person she is, possibly sticking their tongues out at their phones whilst typing furiously. Updating their socials with a cheeky selfie whilst the type.

HotGrapefruit · 31/07/2026 11:25

But I assume part of the OP's irritation is that her DIL clearly doesn't think she's 'enough' without specific poses, filters, many, many photos from which only chooses one etc. That it doesn't suggest someone who is happy with their appearance, rather the reverse.

scoopsahoooy · 31/07/2026 11:32

What a strange thread. Who gives a shit how she looks in photos? You clearly just don't like her, which is your prerogative, but very weird thing to pick out.

AbzMoz · 31/07/2026 11:37

Make it into a fun game… bullshit bingo a go go - full face makeup poolside, trout pout, prosecco o’clock… and then when you make a line get yourself to a large g&t

Or… really wind her up with comments - oh that beach looks pristine! Ds has made an excellent sandcastle there!

Stopposingforselfies · 31/07/2026 11:37

I'm with you OP.
Try working at a university and having to pause your lecture to ask students to stop pouting and posing for fucking selfies. Why? Why is there this constant need to validate your life in this way? They're paying a fortune for an education and spend half their time in class pouting into their phones.

PollyBell · 31/07/2026 11:38

I would match her and post your own
